View Full Version : Which OS?
:salams
The title says it all. Which operating system do you usually use and why choose it over the rest?
I use 3 on a regular basis. Mac OS X, Ubuntu, and Solaris. Oh, and I guess Windows if you count the VM I use for MS Project and IE.
Macs because most of the time I hate having to do mundane IT stuff like dealing with drivers, reinstalling the OS every few months, or playing around with window managers, etc. I prefer to pay Apple instead and in turn they do a great job of giving me machines that I can open, use, and close. Simple and reliable for real work. (Plus, I have to admit my wife and I own some of that stock.)
I use Ubuntu when I feel like playing with the OS. But that's more rare now. I also use it to test software.
I use Solaris because my projects generally use Solaris so it's nice to have a test bed that matches our servers. Solaris has it's little idiosyncrasies, so it's nice to be able to work those out early.
And I use Windows when I absolutely have no other choice. :vomit:
Somewhere on my list of things I want to do before I die is work on a hobby OS. But it's a bit down the list.
EDIT: BTW, I didn't vote, because I can't honestly say I would use a Mac for the rest of my life. In fact, I stopped using Macs for a few years while their operating system wasn't very good at all. I switched back when they basically went to NeXTstep.

Do you think Mac OS X Leopard is quite good? I really like the GUI on that! I'm guessing your more into the power and functionality?
I CHOOSE to use Ubuntu, but I'm forced to use Microsoft at work...

Same here, OSX for its power and simplicity...I used Windows for a short while when Apple were faffing around with OS9 and stuff, and I can honestly say it is the vilest thing possible.
I still use it as a VM once in a blue moon but I would never use it for anything serious.

For what I need, it's a great OS. I'm into having an OS that works and is reliable and powerful enough for my day to day work without a lot of fuss.
There was a long time where Apple didn't have a very good OS at all. But thankfully they took the risk to jettison that old OS (OS 6/7/8/9) and start over again basically with NeXTstep, which was always a really great OS, well ahead of its time.
I'm this (-) close to converting to Mac. I've used it a lot, and being a life long right clicker, I can't get used to the lack of a right mouse button which has always put me off. But then MS pushes me closer to the edge each time I get a BSOD (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_Screen_of_Death) or typical MS error and I think of converting and the cycle goes on.

The mice that come with Apple desktops are 4 button mice. There is a right, left, center and then the side buttons. They look like one button, but it's touch sensitive. Just click on the right for a right click.
On the laptops, tap with 2 fingers is a right click, tap with one is a left click. Or tap with 2 fingers and click the button. Or use the control key and click. Whichever option you prefer.
For whatever reason, these options are turned off by default, but can be enabled from system preferences.

Are you serious? If Jobs and Co. actually enable the 4 button touch by default, I think more people will actually shift. I for one am sold, after I verify what you just said :D. Just have to figure out how to enable them...

Easy, go into "Keyboard & Mouse Preferences" in "System Preferences" and you'll find it there.
Hardly hidden or secret - in fact just where you'd expect it to be!

typical mac behavior, they like to make your life easier, the opposite of microsoft behavior...

Well, it's not exactly difficult to enable. Here is the prefs from my Macbook Air which shows how it is on the notebooks: This is under system preferences -> keyboard and mouse:
With two fingers you can enable scroll (very useful), secondary click (right click), and you can also pinch and rotate with two fingers on the newer macbook pros and air.
And here is the mouse preferences from my desktop, so you can verify the 4 buttons on the desktop mice (which of course can be used wired or wirelessly with the notebooks as well, if you buy the mouse separately)
Again, very easy to enable if you're want the right mouse button:
Mace, thank you for enlightening me. I think I now know what my next computer will be Insha'Allah.

Jazakallahu khair bro. Much appreciated. Seems from what every Mac owner tells me that life has been easier ever since they started using Apples.
Asaalam all,
I user windows, but Inshallah soon start using Ubuntu.
Jazakallah

I use windows because it generally meets my needs. I look forward for the day when some brand of *nix has the support and the feel necessary to replace Windows. That will be nice.

Mac OS is as much *nix as Linux is.
What is your definition of *nix?
EDIT: Sorry, I didn't mean UNIX, although Apple has licensed that term.

I voted for Microsoft Windows but which one?
Windows XP for me.
Windows Vista just doesnt do it, is very annoying at times, and just isnt as user-friendly as XP.

I can't vote because the 3rd choice is inaccurate.
It should be Linux. Or, if you want to be pedantic (or Richard Stallman), GNU/Linux.

:D You have to admit, he has a point. It would have been pretty hard to write or use the kernel without glibc and the tools (gcc, gdb, etc.)

True.
And, by the same token, where would GNU be without Linux?

BTW, check out the Ubuntu repos for 8.04. There's a desktop Adhan in there ;)

Touche. :)
I remember playing with Hurd 20 years ago. :smack:

as im a new user of computer,so i mostly use WINDOWS XP.i use pc only for studies mostly!lol.........::D:(
as salamu alaikum,
i use windows xp actually, but when I can, I use ubuntu. right now though, I have kubuntu (hardy heron) installed. prior to that, I had openSuSE 10.3. and prior to that, I had Ubuntu 8.04.
Mind you, I haven't loaded Kubuntu in over 2 weeks though because of graphics card issues. I have a radeon x1650 pro 512MB card, and linux is giving insane amount of issues. ubuntu wouldn't even load up. Kubuntu alhumduillah atleast loads. OpenSuSE loads too but I can't enable any 3d acceleration or it goes haywire.
I'm thinking I'd have to wait atleast for 2 or 3 more amd-ati driver releases before I can actually enjoy linux with compiz fusion n all. until then, I am pretty much crippled with linux.
as salamu alaikum
I use windows xp - yea its a pain sometimes but its easy to get stuff compatible with it unlike others. I have used Ubuntu before and it was useable I guess. I dont like mac's they annoy me - but if I have to I will use it. As long as the comp works and does what I want I dont care what os its running :p but I find for most of my stuff windows is ok to settle with for now.
as salamu alaikum,
wow, i'm impressed sis. i don't expect muslimahs tot alk like that, or females in general. usually most females like xp because thats what they are used to and dislike anything else because its "geeky".
but u bring up a good point: aslong as your applications are working, then it shouldn't matter what the OS is. Taht's why I like to use applications taht are available on all systems . mostly, these include web appilcations because these thigns, once you start using, they feel the same on every PC. so things like firefox, gmail, thunderbird, open office, etc. once you start using them on windows, even if u goto a system that's mac or linux, it wouldn't matter because you are already used to it. so there's no compatbility or usability issue.

Bismillah,

I use Windows Xp and Vista, Hardware support especially in Xp is good, and Sd acceleration is better than virtually all of the other Operating systems put together, although Other operating systems do have certain advantages.

didn't realize people out there actually use plan9
who actually uses it? just academia no?

Looks slick.
as salamu alaikum,

I'm downloading it at the moment, but can't use any of the desktop effects because I also have a "not so good" graphics card... Apparently my laptop graphics card has been black listed.

what kinda card bro? and what chipset?
mines is a rv535 i believe...and that chipset has only recently been supported. but as always, i been havign alot of difficulty in installing ati drivers. worse I believe ubuntu's bulletproofx feature is causing alot of headaches for me because anytime I try to let the driver generate a new xorg.conf , the bulletproof crap monkey overwrites it with its own generic thing, AGH!!!
it took me a few hours just to get kubuntu to work but even then I had some funky resolution, and it would work randomly, other times giving me totally messed up views, and forget about desktop effects, ha!
i think it'll be another few months, maybe ubuntu 8.10 or openSuSE 12 when i'll be able to just install the damn thing and have it work "out of the box"
I have an ATI Radeon Mobility M6 LY. Desktop effects used to work out of the box in OpenSUSE 10.3 and worked in Ubuntu 7.10 after installing the drivers, which was literally as easy as point and click. But it has now been black listed apparently and is very difficult to get it to work with desktop effects on ubuntu 8.04. Haven't tried OpenSUSE 11.0 yet. Still downloading it.
