salam all, just want us to share memories of our first pc's. I think it would be nice to show them some gratitude or pay them tribute (for those who've moved on from their first pc's)
... well I'll start ... these r the specs for the first pc i owned:
model: Compaq Contura (notebook) made in '92
processor: ?
HDD: 300Megs (can u believe this? less than a CD)
OS: Win 95
Dead/Alive: still living, but the lcd display seems to be melting. it still works though. wanted to give it away some time back but just couldnt master the courage. I'm too attached to it. Havent turned it on in over 6 months.
Not a PC per-se but my first computer:
Model: Commodore VIC20
Processor: MOS 6502, 1MHz
HDD: None at all
RAM: 5K (3.5K for the user)
OS: ROM BASIC
Dead/Alive: Haven't the foggiest, it's not been fired up for over 20 years.

OS: Microsoft Windows 3.1
CPU: AMD 386 25MHz
RAM: 4Mb
HDD: 150Mb

First ever computer apparently I've played on.

Motorola 16MHz, couple of megs RAM
40MB Hard Drive
OS: System 7
Sometime around 1992
Lovely machine! Still works.

u see, that's the lovely thing, some of those old "junks" still work. i bet if u hadnt used one personally and someone told you he'd giv u one to play around with you'd be surprised a 16MHz machine can power up. (imagine comparing it to say a 1.7Ghz duo core with 2Gig RAM or a 3GHz P4)

Hehe - Actually, for some of what I've done, those machines are perfect - like writing (so uncluttered and simple) - my Father did his whole thesis on one of those.
And they're brilliant for the kids (the colour ones) - there's little that can go wrong and kids love their own little machines.
I remember when our first IBM compatible machine came into the house - it seemed like being sent back to the stone ages, after using those macs...it was soon thrown out of the house!

It’s worth remembering (at least by those old enough to remember) that the early adoption of the personal micro PC in the UK in the early ‘80s did a huge favour in the seeding of a number of tech firms that are now quite successful in the UK. It’s often cited that the BBC Acorn was the seed, but personally I feel it was more down to the Sinclair ZX80/81 and the Commodore VIC20/64.
wow!
Programming with just 3.5k local memory and no hard disk meant that you had to be really efficient with resources, oh how the days have changed........
Sorry to hijack this thread but do any of you chaps remember the old BASIC commands, even to this day I find PEEK and POKE vaguely amusing.
Am I too old?
Asaalam,
I dont even remember which was my first PC.
Sorry.
But it was the fastest one i think 1998.
Jazakallah

You and me both :D The hard drive was a cassette tape.
I can't remember which one it was exactly but I had one comp where the modem was a cradle for an old school phone and you had to directly dial the bbs that you wanted to post on...ahh the not so good old days LOL
My first true pc was an old 8088 with a monochrome green monitor

Went through BASIC some time back ... after i already knew VB. Back then i had to pick an elective course to make up the minimum credits when i was in 3rd year uni ... made an A- (guess the lecturer found out I already knew programming.:D) but it was worth it cos the course was 3 credits

Well, first we owned a word processor--so, not really a computer but it was great since I never had to use a manual type writer. Then my dad bought a cheap computer which we only barely ever used. The first real one was a:
200mHz Pentium processor with MMX. The case had an LED panel which said "166" which was supposed to be the original clock speed before we upgraded.
I forget the RAM but it had to be tiny. A 2gb HDD and a 500MB secondary one. It ran Windows 95
Our second PC was even worse and ran 3.1. I think we got it for free as a word processing backup.
I am happy to not have to use those slowww things.

owwww, insha-Allah your time will come.
The first machine i bought with my own money is a Toshiba Equium L400 laptop, which i'm currently using. bought it about 6months ago. it's a pentium duo core and came with 1Gig RAM which I upgraded 3 weeks ago to 2Gigs.
my dad bought me my first machine, and in between the two machines, i've been using the family desktops. one is a Dell pentium II (~400Mhz with 128 RAM and 2Gig HDD) and the other is a Compaq Deskpro (~375Mhz with 64Mb RAM and 4Gig HDD.) We've upgraded the compaq from Win 95 to Me, and is currently running Xp. both machines are still at home and working.

same with me. when i decided to buy a laptop, my first choice was an ibook. it was inspired by a series i watched some time ago. it was an Australian series ... i think the name was Headstart and had a group of young folks trying to make a start for themselves in their chosen careers. there was one geek with an ibook working on a software or something.
... well, i later decided to go for a regular windows machine, esp when vista had just been released. more ppl use windows therefore there are more programs, games, etc for the OS than any other ... microsoft is aware of this and i guess that's why they can afford to bluff the way they are doing.
...and of course, for those who want cracked programs & games, windows OS is the best choice.

... in my opinion, sony is the best, Toshiba closely follows. I would have bought a sony if not for the fact that i was tight on cash. I settled for my current toshiba equium.
generally, the most powerful machines are the entertainment/gaming machines. they've got the best video, 3D and other hardware. they also hav large hard disks and RAMs. dont be surprised if you find them a expensive ... it's just because of the high specs.
if you dont find any laptop within ur budget, you can post here and members will assist you find a good machine within your budget
