A three volume set of books stands on the bookshelf. Each cover is 1/4 of an inch thick and the pages of each book are 1 inch thick. A bookworm starts on page 1 of volume 1 and eats his way to the last page of volume 3. How far does he travel?

Can you please define what you mean by the "cover". What do you mean exactly when you say the cover is 1/4 of an inch thick? Does this mean that the thickness of the front and back covers equal 1/8 each adding up to 1/4 of an inch. It is a little confusing.

Thanks

Only 2 inches.

When a book is rightside up on a shelf, the first page is on the right portion of the book (looking at its spine). Thus, the last page is on the left. So the worm's starting point is on the right side of book three and his ending point is on the left of book 3. This means he doesn't have to eat through 2 covers (back of book 1 and front of book 3), nor the pages of book 1 or book 3.
The worm had to eat through the front cover of book 1, the back cover of book 2, the 1 inch of pages in book 2, the front cover of book 2, and the back cover of book 3 to reach the last page of book 3. (4 covers*1/4 inch/cover) +1 inch of pages in book 2 = 2 inches.
