View Full Version : A decent online source for hadith?

I've been able to find a variety of sources on the text of the Qur'an, and a dozen-and-a-half or so translations (such as the parallel readings at http://islamawakened.org/quran/ ). However, it seems trickier to find a similar easily-searched website that collects the hadith - and that's not even taking into account that different Islamic denominations refer to different sets of hadith.

What sites would you recommend as being useful references about hadith?

And while I'm on the topic, do you have any other recommendations about how someone who knows little more than Wikipedia's articles on the topic to learn more about it?

Thank you for your time,

There are some good links on this page to read up on the science of hadith.

Thank you both for the links.

If I may ask, though, are there only single-translation sites of hadith available, and not multiple-translations ones, such as the one for the Qur'an at the site I mentioned? I would hate to gain a false understanding of a hadith due to having only a single translation to examine.

I think those are the only English translations of ahadith available online.
If you know Arabic though then all the major collections of ahadith can be viewed online.

And here's one more collection of ahadith:

just to add hadiths need to be understood with their respective commentaries.

Unfortunately no commentaries are available in the English language so one is urged to study hadiths under the guidance of Islamic Scholars.

Unfortunately, it is going to be quite some time, if ever, before I understand more than a few scattered words of Arabic. If I may ask, how extensive are the commentaries you mention - how much text is there?

In addition, as is obvious from my online name, I'm something of an information hoarder. Even if I don't understand them, would the Arabic versions of the commentaries be available online? (I often use the program 'wget' to make local mirrors of entire websites, for later perusal in case the original site goes down - and yes, that has actually happened. :) )

Here you go: http://hadith.al-islam.com/

That site contains all six of the major hadith collections, as well as commentaries for them. And more than that too. These works run into volumes so it would be a fair amount of text.
