View Full Version : Should I wear a seat belt?
Salaams.
On the jamaat this weekend, the group was saying that I didn't have to wear a seat belt because it's up to Allah (SWT) whether we get into a car accident or not and therefore there's no point in wearing a seat belt. We went the entire trip without wearing seat belts.
Is this smart? I was especially worried a couple times because the driver would take a jug of juice (gallon-size) and drink out of the jug while driving and we would serve and stuff.

Allah also asks us not to be stupid and use our brains!

Oh good, I always wanted to shoot myself in the head to see how it feels like... Now knowing that if allah doesn't want me to die, then I wont. *looking for a gun*

There's an Arabic proverb that goes something like 'Have faith in Allah(swt) but tie up your camel as well.'
If we all lived with that mentality, there would be no need to take medications etc...
Wear your seatbelt.
In Islam; we are taught to "Trust in Allah (swt) but also tie up the camel". (Correct me if I'm wrong but this is what I remember) Someone asked the Prophet (saw) if he could leave his camel roaming on the street on the basis that if he puts his trust in Allah (swt) then his camel would stay safe and not wander off so maybe he shouldn't bother tying up the camel because of his trust in Allah (swt). The Prophet (saw) said to him "Trust in Allah (swt) but also tie the camel"
The same rule applies to your situation as this means that you take relevant halal precautions (such as wearing the seatbelt) to keep you and your belongings safe and also place your trust in Allah (swt) to do whatever is best. The reason why the Prophet (saw) advised the man to do BOTH is because he neither wanted the man to take needless risks out of "trust in Allah (swt)" nor did he want the man to think arrogantly that taking precautions will make him in control of every situation because the man should be both mindful of his own responsibility in ensuring the safety of his posessions AND mindful of remembering Allah (swt)- it's not an "either/or" type situation. You should advise your brothers in Islam that their fatalistic mentality actually contradicts this advice given in the Sunnah.
ur suppossed to do everything in your means to keep your self safe and healthy and then leave the rest to Allah swt. u cant expect good grades by not studying you know

not a proverb.....it's what the prophet :saw: said to the Bedouin who left his camel untied because he believed in the same flawed logic followed by the friends of Wolfn

While there's so much great stuff about Jamaat, unfortunately you'll always meet characters in Jamaat that love to dish out silly advice like this. We used to call them "Gajwa Fatwa's" - fatwas that people just pull out from their own pocket. You should have worn your seat bealt bro; they all should have done. Everything is Allah's will, but we all have the responsibility to protect the health that Allah has given us. Allah will protect us, but we have to use the means, not to mention the fact that failure to wear a seat belt is illegal, and Jamaat sathi's should know better then to be breaking the law whilst in Jamaat.
I'm glad you all came back in one piece!

Brother, if not for a seatbelt, I would not be a muslim right now... I would be dead. To make a long story short: after I graduated college, I studied religion (Islam in particular). I kept asking a friend of mine who is a muslim many questions and he kept stressing to me "If you are going to do this (take shahada), do it now because you do not know when death will come." Well, I took a job and while moving to my apartment, I flipped the truck I was driving and would have surely died, if not for the seatbelt I was wearing. I took shahada that afternoon.
True, the Qadr exists but I have also heard a hadith (pardon me, I do not recall it in detail perhaps someone knows what I am referring to and can elaborate) where RasulAllah ( :saws2: ) states: "have taqwa but also go to the experts in their respective fields", and experts in safety advise you to wear one.
Please do, brother.

So some poor EMT doesn't have to scrape what's left of you off the pavement should you be in an unfortunate accident ... that's not an easy job ...
We went the entire trip without wearing seat belts.
Just because they were foolish enough to drive around like that doesn't mean you should have felt pressured to do the same.
I know young people don't always exercise good judgment, but you really worry me, Wolfn.
Take care of yourself.

that's like saying if you are cop "don't wear a bullet proof vest, because it's up to Allah if you get shot or not".
we put our trust in Allah but we also don't put ourselves in the face of danger.
you should wear a seat belt for your safety. and on top of that it's illegal not the wear

Good example! Wolfn, recommend to all your friends to throw themselves off a cliff and trust in Allah (swt). Tell them it's a test of their faith.

use your common sense, you really did not need to ask this.

You really have to wonder what sort of Islam it is that Wolfn's buddies are following.
In all my reading about Islam I've never come across anything that even vaguely approaches this, eg "We don't need seatbelts! We're Muslim!"

some ppl are desperately hoping to become "martyrs". arent there any correlations with so-called suicide bombers?
OK it's unanimous then, Wolfn, wear a seatbelt when you are in a car...to do elsewise is stupid.
That said, I am closing this thread before it becomes another JT slamming thread

thirty minutes ago or more i saw an accident.....and the guy in the passenger seat had his head gashed badly because he was not wearing a seat belt.
and from what i saw i guess that the other car driver was crossing the cross road with his eyes closed or something.....and BAAAAAAAAAAAAAANG!
first time i ever call the ambulance in my life...and the number was busy
LOL @ the busy line but not at the accident. IMHO this is why most of us need to have some form of advanced first aid training. Accidents happen all the time and sometimes the difference between life and death is just having someone there that knows what to do.
