View Full Version : Music/Sound Randomly Plays
Sometimes my speakers play these sounds; sometimes it's a music clip, another time it sounds like a commercial, and at times a dialogue from a movie. It lasts only around 2-3 seconds and comes on randomly with no applications open.
I've scanned my PC with ZoneAlarm Anti-Virus and dozens of Spyware programs but the problem hasn't stopped despite those finding one or two viruses. Any suggestions?

Is your speakers on power? Turn the computer off and leave the speakers on? Or does your speakers connect to your computer?

My speakers are external, plugged in and they're on. I need them on to wake me up for my Alarm. I don't turn my PC off but I get startled at night by hearing a voice in my room, only to find that its from the speakers.

Put some other pair of speakers? Or you can write down the sounds it makes. Repetitive sounds? I dont know any virus that does that.

Do you have a perfs.exe in your running processes?
I'll check when I get home.

I dont know if that is the same thing, but if it is then have a look at this link: http://www.techsupportforum.com/security-center/general-computer-security/193943-solved-random-sound-virus.html#post1204830
I followed the instructions there, my computer rebooted and wont get passed the Dell logo. It keep restarting itself. Same thing under Safe Mode.

Don't use Internet Explorer as your primary browser, use Firefox, it is much more safe and secure, and prevents many activex malware from messing with your PC:
http://www.mozilla.org/
Download and install ALL of these programs (I assume you have an anti-virus installed, if not, then install AVG Free edition):
AVG Free anti-virus. Excellent and free anti-virus which does the job equally as well as commercial anti-virus programs:
http://free.grisoft.com/
In addition to having AVG anti-virus, you can also install Avira Anti-Virus to run alongside AVG Free as they do not conflict with each other. It is always better to have an additional anti-virus as backup rather than having one anti-virus installed as having two anti-virus programs will ensure an anti-virus picks up and removes a virus the other anti-virus program didn't.

CCleaner (use this program every time you finish surfing the internet, it cleans your PC far more than "Disk Cleanup" which is preinstalled with Windows XP):
http://www.ccleaner.com/download/
Comodo Firewall (the best firewall out at the moment):
http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/
Windows Defender (this stops spyware from loading on to your PC in the first place):
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=435BFCE7-DA2B-4A6A-AFA4-F7F14E605A0D&displaylang=en&mg_id=10134
Spyware Blaster (this secures your browser from being hijacked by spyware and adware, it also prevents you from visiting sites which are known to infect you the moment you visit them):
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
Ad-Aware (finds and cleans spyware):
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/products/ad-aware_se_personal.php
Spybot S&D (finds and cleans spyware):
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/mirrors/index.html
PeerGuardian (Protects you from being monitored by the authorities when downloading movies, games etc from torrent networks. It acts as a firewall for torrent downloading, preventing the government from spying on what you download):

It's important that you download all of these, as a single program by itself cannot protect you against all threats, so these programs compliment each other very well. Also, they do not waste much memory. Remember to scan your PC as soon as you download them.
Ok I got back somehow by booting it by the last known working configuration. However, something isn't right yet. I wanted to uninstall that RegRun crap but for some reason...there is no Uninstall/Change/Repair button for many of my programs.

I have a heck alot more programs than that but its not showing it?
When I did do some registry digging I noticed all of the registry keys that were associated with uninstalling programs were gone. As soon as you reinstall a program the uninstall feature works again. It's quite a strange problem. I figured this would be the perfect time to do a full reinstall anyway. Granted, I don't want the issue to happen again.
Yep that's exactly it. The registry files for those programs have gone. Is there a way I can get them back without reinstalling everything?
