This is my first poll, so I hope it works!
I am interested to know how many of us regularly attend study circles.

I voted for - I have been meaning to join one soon, insh'Allaah
But can I ask.............are your referring to study circles at local Masjids or amongst fellow Brothers/Sisters in your own house?
We have a couple of my two local Masjids that I mean to join soon inshallah.
A.A. what is a study group? studying what?

Either really. Both will help us increase our knowledge of the Deen.

It's where a group get together to study a subject relevant to Islam, such as Arabic, the Qu'ran, Fiqh. It is a long-practised Islamic tradition (Halaqa is the Arabic word for it) and a very good way of getting together with like minded people who want to learn.
I attend a weekly Muslimah's study circle at the home of a sister, which has greatly helped increase my knowledge of Fiqh. We discuss all sorts of interesting topics for an couple of hours. I also attend classes at the Masjid. I believe that it is very beneficial to strive to increase one's knowledge of the Deen and study circles are a great way to do it.

any "study circle" without a scholar of quran and hadith is potential destruction

That's not necessarily true bro. When people go in jamaat, there aren't always scholars of quran and hadeeth in every jamaat, but halaqas are still conducted where particular subjects are covered such as the fardh and sunnah of certain rituals, and these "study circles" are always beneficial.

Study circles can be among residents of a paticular locality. They can be of colleagues working in a common establishment, of relatives, of friends etc.
During our college days, we were a circle of friends who used to play together, pray together and study together. We had different faculties for the same subject as we were in different batches attending the course.
Whenever exams drew near we used to asemble at fixed timings for a combined study. Each one had his notes from his lecturer. By mutual discussion we were leaning better. If any point came up that could not be solved from our notes, we used to consult our professors.
Keeping that example in mind I would appreciate a similar study circle where people studying / who have studied under different scholars assemble for a combined study of the subjects they have learnt / are learning. Such study circles will have the supervision of more than one 'ustaad' though not at the site of assembly / study circle.
Rgarding the study circle within the tj for rehearsing rituals, since there cannot be a scholar in each of the several halqas within a mosque I would suggest that small booklets may be made available to each halqa so that the literate among them could read out the Arabic text and its meanings written by authentic scholars.

All praise is due to Allah and may Allah's peace and blessings be upon His messenger (saws). Verily the best speech is the book of Allah and the best guidance is the guidance of Muhammad sallallahu alaihiwasallam and the worst of affairs are the newly invented matters and every innovation is misguidance and all misguidance is in the fire. (Sahih Muslim Eng. Trans. Vol. 2 Page 40 no. 1885).

These books have been discussed in detail at the following link:

It would be cool to have a study thread that is limited to a circle of people...

For other topics its alright but if its about Islam The Path 2 is absolutely right. If topics about Islam are to be discussed there should be someone qualified there. I have seen from personal experience what fitnah could happen when people make themselves sheikhs.

How about Haddith......
Ok, open your study thread about Haddith. I shall join you Insha Allah.
In the classes I attend, we start off with a story, related to a hadith, then we learn arabic (we're all beginners in Qur'an), then there's knowledge and/or beliefs. Sometimes if we have extra time we discuss matters in our everyday life, making sure we do things the correct way.
Mind you, the class is only about six sisters. But Alhamdulillah we're achieving something...strenghtening our imaan.

Assalaamu Alaikum,
I recited the Shahada in Nov of 2007 and, masha'Allah, I have benefitted greatly from my weekly study circles. In addition to my "new Muslim" class every Sunday, I study with a brother from my masjid twice a week.
