Ah, the home of Jim Al-Khalili...

Good line up of talks, this is in Guildford right? In which case it's only 1/2 hour from Waterloo! might go.

If anyone is going, go for an amble to Guildford castle while you're there, it's lovely...

Yea, the castle! Well it's not really a castle, just the remains of a tall tower, but it is very nice - you'll find it on an ordnance survey map, very close to the London Road train station.

lol - I've been going to Guildford for nearly five years now and didnt know that was there!!! :o

I think I've seen it though - behind Battersea court on campus is the cathedral and from the hill there, theres a brilliant view :) I think thats where I've seen it.

hehe, I was surprised! The first day I stepped into Guildford I stumbled across the castle. (I don't know much about the campus - but the castle is pretty high up too).

Oh, if you go there often, if you have a few hours to spare and the weather's nice, follow the national trail path just south of the London Road station - follow it sort of SE, and after a very steep climb you'll come to one of the highest hills in the area (St. Martha's hill), with absolutely stunning views, and one of the oldest churches in the country (12th century).

There are not many muslims living there...not too sure about how many halal food shops...I know of one place for halal meat lol - Woking is not that far away anyway and there's lots of shops there apparently

no thats not true

there are two that i know of within a short drive from my parents house. One is on woodbridge hill. The other is on the same road as the back entrance of the main train station. And they're just the two I know of. the one on woodbridge hill is the best IMO and the prices are very good too mashaAllah.

Not that many muslims in Guildford, but next to it in woking there are loads...It also has the first purpose built mosque there in Britain...so a good reason to go there aswell...

al_islam
27-02-08, 11:20 PM
funny because Guildford Park Avenue seems to be the centre of attention yet there is not much going on there.

The 'spice village' shop is not that good and the take aways are not even 'halal'.....according to the workers, 1 day half the shop is halal and the next day its all halal !

the turks are dishonest.

Mujib

no lol - I've just got used to being in a nice open space with green all around so its kinda scary to go into central London, have to travel on the public transport and see just buildings and buildings... Both places have advantages and disadvantages I guess but I just prefer to not be in the middle of the busy city :) I like to see the grass and trees - and be able to drive there :D

al_islam
28-02-08, 08:29 PM
Why is there a big lake in the middle of the uni ?

Loobna sis- i was there the academic year of 2005-2006 :)
I thought it was beautiful- and convenient too! If you want fun, laughter and lots to do- its 40 mins on the train to Waterloo and if you want peace and quiet, a nice afternoon by the lake or in the town centre :) Perfect. Scenery was subhanAllah astounding.

For those of you wanting to come along here (http://portal.surrey.ac.uk/pls/portal/docs/PAGE/GATEWAY/VISITORS/CAMPUSMAP.PDF)'s a map to help you. The talks are in the Lecture theatre which is marked number 12.

I've marked the prayer room on the attached one :)

In other words, come out of Guildford train station, turn right and walk along until you see a sign for UniS car Park.

Its up an alley way, that is easily missed because the signs for UniS are non existent.

Going up the alley you come to a big long car park, walk all the way up it.

Upon entering the back of the campus and walking on, you will see some ship - shaped building.

Walk up the stairs and look for sign posts that point to the lecture theatre. I believe they are next to the library....but I havnt been in a while.

Ask around if you get lost, everyone is helpful.

I know, took me ages finding it !

Also the exit from the train station are the ones in the opposite direction from the town centre ones.

Once on campus, its small.....not like QMUL....easy directions and plenty of signs.

London Unis (Kings, QMUL, UCL, Imperial) are all hard to navigate around.....

Manchester Main, Bham Main and Aston are better.

Oxford and Cambridge are stunningly breath taking...

Haven't been anywhere else !

walaikum asalaam

What did you think of the exhibition?

There are lots of brothers and sisters who live on campus or around campus, I think most of them are overseas students. Some live in London or other areas near to Guildford like Woking and commute to Surrey uni. There are also some muslim families (not students) living in and around Guildford.

The exhibition? Well I was the only one there at like 9.15am Friday morning.........well apart from the cleaner!! lol

There were some nice 'poster-boards' on show, as well as many many free books, so I grabbed 5 free books and left. It would of been nice to of met one of the Brothers or Sisters who helped organise this event but alas, no one was there :(

I made my Shahada at Woking Masjid by the way!! :)
