View Full Version : Flirting with the opposite sex

I heard on the radio today that some young men in Saudi had been arrested on charges of playing music in a public place, dancing, and attempting thereby to attract the attention of young women of their own age in order to 'flirt' with them.

I would like some serious comments on why it is wrong for young men and women to engage in flirtation.

Thank you!

Its pretty obvious why such behavior is prohibited ...

flirting = likely zina (sex before marriage) = society breakdown = decline of civilisation = sins = going to hell

We have a pretty good civilization, which has only got better as our moral values became progressively more liberal (i.e. sensible). The Islamic view of sexual morality appears to lead to nothing but violence. Perhaps that is what it is there for.?

Pretty good civilisation huh?

Dare you to get a brandnew fone out in an urban area without the fear of being mugged. Dare you to park your latest car in an urban area without the frear of vandalism.

Furthermore, What do you think will happen if the electricity was shutdown for one night and the police stop working... MASS LOOTING, good example is hurricane katerina...

If you call that good civilisation, then I wonder whats a bad civilisation to you.

Does that include friendships between men, the kind of 'close' friendships to be found, say, in madrassahs, where homosexuality is an accepted way of life?

There is no reason other then obedience to All swt. Muslism just sound foolish when they try and give "logical" reasons to these issues.

Nothing! He said we live in a good civilisation, and I pointed out that we don't.

If you try to trace the roots of all of these problems, you will find the roots to be the breakdown of families and that nobody fears god.

As Muslims we are told to lower our gaze and protect our modesty. Allah says in Surah Al-Israa ayah 32: And come not near unto adultery. Lo! it is an abomination and an evil way.

So we can see from this that going near adultery us wrong. Adultery, zina, is not only committing sexual acts. If I continually stare at a handsome man and start having thoughts about him, then I'm committing zina through my eyes. If I'm flirting with someone and I'm getting a response and a reaction from my words, then we are committing zina through our words.

Talking about work, school, asking for the time in that case it is permissible to speak with the opposite sex. But after that there isn't really a need for them. What is the point of flirting anyways? To lead to other things, to get a reaction. And that goes against Islam. If you want to flirt, flirt with your husband or wife.

Flirting is haram in Islam because it ruins the perception of a person. Islam as a system of living provides it's followers protection from all forms of spiritual and mental unrest.

Flirting is like walking into a restaurant and dipping ones tongue in everyones dish. By the end of the night two things will happen, the person will be extremely ill and extremely confused as what to eat.

Whilst if one was to look at the beginning why they came to the restaurant it was to eat, fill the tummy and go home. However because they tasted all the dishes out on the tables, they offended all the patrons , got ill and extremely confused what to eat and at the end went home hungry.

This is why Islam doesnt allow flirting, as it makes the person lose focus of what their true aim is. Today unfortunately the world looks at engagements between the opposite sex in lewdness as a norm. However in reality it isnt norm, simply because each lewd act leaves an impression on the psychology of the individual. Whether as a good impression or bad, it is a bit of luggage that is carried along. That in itself changes the clear conscious of a person to one occupied by unfulfilled engagements. Thus leading to a very unsettled, restless and at times lost individual.

I hope that answers your question from a logical perspective.

Trying to chat up random women is not morally wrong? There’s a reason why Allah (swt) forbids things, most of them quite obvious actually.

Ok i am a bit late but i will give my take:

1. if you are talking about your "modern" civilisation against ours then please note:
WE dont encourage women to be all slim and smart in order for them to feel good
WE dont bully people if they have a defect
WE dont compel people to commit suicide
WE dont have a problem if you are black, white, orange, green.
WE are taught to respect women and not to oogle them when they are out and about
WE are taught not to wear immodest clothes so that men like you would oggle them
WE dont go around in our schools shooting fellow classmates
WE dont sleep around like you.. and no matter how you put it what you are doing IS SLEEPING around like bunch of sluts and slags.. i mean you try to be all faithful when you have a boyfriend/girlfriend and once you break up you move on to the next person.. this can be seen as just another form of "marriage". but you think it is ok to sleep around. come on lets face it, how many of you have cheated on your other half or else these problem pages in newspaper wouldnt be there
We are told to be celibate until we are married and then to not astray/commit adultery.
We are told to respect women and not to treat them as sexual objects.
We dont have all these sexual diseases like you all do and then you moan about getting them. Well if you STOPPED sleeping around you wouldnt get them, but its your sexual desires that is stopping you from realising this

2. Flirting is the first step to bedding someone, you only flirt with people you like or have a crush on, so you flirt and then get on with them.. and pretty soon that lust dies away and you move on? is this civilisation

3. flirting is wrong because of all of the above and this is also why men shouldnt look at women who are "strangers" and vice versa

Lastly to the person who said we find reasons and the only reason is because Allah has commanded us not to..:
If you go to a non-muslim and tell him "you shouldnt drink Alcohol because Allah has commanded you not to" what will that non-muslim do? probably laugh at your face because he doesnt "accept/believe" Allah.. wheras if you said because of Alcohol you do stupid stuff like get into fights, ruin your lives he is more likely to listen to us. Point is to us muslims it is enough that it is Allah's command but to some people (muslims and non-muslims) it is necessary to explain WHY?
