Assalam Alaikum! I was wondering whether we're allowed to pray to Allah with no lights on- just darkness. I feel at peace when it's dark and I love praying to Allah in this condition. There are no distractions when it's dark; it's just quiet... a moment for contemplation and reflection.

So is it allowed?

i read in the life of ayesha that once she woke in the middle of the night and it was pitch dark and she felt around and realized that the Prophet (saw) was not there. she immediately became jealous and suspected that he had left to go and visit another wife. she got up and in the darkness she found him and he was in sajood.

she felt bad for thinking the way she did. she found her beloved husband in prostration in the middle of the night, in darkness, where no one, but he and Allah alone knew what he was doing..:inlove:

the night prayers are highly recommended and i am sure muslims prayed during the night, before the invention of electricity

I kinda thing it's nicer to pray in natural lighting that reflects the time of prayer.. if it's night pray in the dark, if it's daylight, pray in daylight..

I don't know if the ruling is makruk or haram but the place of prayer cannot be so dark whereas you cannot see your place of sujud. You should be able to see that much. There is also a hadith in which it is clear the the Prophet of Allah upon him be blessings and peace would pray with his eyes open throughout the entire prayer (it is said: looking it his place of sujud the entire time.) and Allah knows best - good question.

It is true that it is Halal till proven Haram but one is obliged to learn fiqh when it comes to ones dealings with Allah and dealings with other such as trade, etc. reading Hadiths and Quran by oneself do not suffice one has to look to the figh scholars. If I am mistaken then one of us should try to write a book of regarding the halal and haram of trade/finance in Islam or inheirtance law.

eek! I think the same thing.

I guess this is the result of an overactive imagination and too much reading. :(

I love praying in the dark too:hidban: its just soo much more relaxing and soothing!!

But you know whenver Im in the dark, I always imagine how its gna be like in the grave!!:( In that confined and pitch black place , where we are not going to be able to pray, so i guess we shud mke the most of it now while we can!

Concerning praying in the dark is Makrooh I heard and the only reason for it is that some dangerous creature can come in the dark with you not aware of it and bite you. I read with a little light on.
As long as concentration matters, pious men used to pray near the wall, in a corner so that their eyes do not wander.
I think this is quite reasonable.
