View Full Version : Sleep!! I need sleep!!

I've been having serious problems sleeping for the last month or two. Some nights I don't sleep at all and most nights no more than 3 hours.
Subhan'Allah it's really starting to affect my mood - I seem to be getting stressed out by matters that I would normally take in my stride.
My doctor recommended a short course of sleeping pills, but I declined because I don't want to become dependant on such things. I've tried all matter of natural remedies, but to no avail.
I think part the problem is that I have now convinced myself that I wont sleep, so therefore, I don't. The subconscious mind is a powerful thing.
Anyone have any recommendations before I mentally lose it completely and go on a killing spree. I'm joking, of course......I think.
:jkk:
Wa-alaikum salaam Wr
:rotfl: I hope you are joking! but dont joke about sleep deprivation effects bro... dont you know people have done crazy things like kill ion their sleep :p they also see spiders in their shoes when sleep deprived.. have you experienced that yet? lol
Ok enough of the joking. What kinda natural remedies have you tried? Have you tried having a relaxing bath/shower before sleeping? Use lavender or something? What about reading before you sleep? Have you tried exercising? maybe you need to tire out your body or something (although i get the feeling youre probably quite busy and rushed off your feet anyway)? What about reading Quran before you sleep or continuously odoing Dhikr of Allah (read sleeping duaas and Kalimahs) before sleeping? :o

Simple sleeping pills with a low dosage are not addictive.....
Main Causes
Insomnia is a condition that is caused by something else! Sometimes it won't be immediately obvious what the causes are in your own case, but the following list might give clues:
states of mind - anxiety, depression, worry, anger, grief, anticipating a difficult event
change - moving house/city, starting university
environment - noise, discomfort, time zone change
pain - one of the commonest causes
medical conditions - heart, breathing, stomach, digestive, high blood pressure, arthritis, anorexia.
recreational drugs - including nicotine, caffeine, heroin, cocaine, amphetamines, LSD, cannabis
sleeping pills and tranquillisers - can actually cause sleep disturbance
other prescription drugs - including some contraceptives, diuretics, slimming pills, beta-blockers, stimulants.
Some causes of insomnia can't be easily dealt with but most can.

Spiders in shoes? That's nothing, I got served by a giant spider in the supermarket. Joking, again.
Things I've tried - exercise, hot baths with radox and essential oils, chamomile tea, valerian tea, reading boring books and natural sleep remedies such as "Kalms" to name but a few.
I can't read Qur'an or do dhikr to help me sleep because I like to concentrate on what I'm reading/saying.

Yeah, I'm definitely stressed, but I think that is a effect of the insomnia rather than the cause of it.

Hhmmm ok so youve tried all the most obvious things. Is there something on your mind or is it just a case of finding it difficult to fall asleep? You know what, i wouldnt over think it if its not been going on for too long inshaAllah. I actually go through phases like this too- sometimes i find it difficult to sleep at all for like a whole week but by the next week my mind and body is so tired out that as soon as my head hits the pillow im out! :hidban:
I know you want to concentrate and thats excellent mashaAllah  but sleeping duaas over and over again really might help :o

Well, it's been going on for about 6 weeks now...feels like 6 years, though.
There are definitely things "on my mind", but just the normal everyday stresses and strains which I normally cope with rather well, most the time, anyway insha'Allah. It's more a case of being unable to stop myself thinking about things, like I can't turn my brain off and get into sleep mode.
Any dua's for sleep you can recommend insha'Allah?

spiders in supermarkets remind me of the times we went camping and found spiders on the inside of our towels... subhanAllah .. lol they do turn up everywhere
you are probably right.. it's a vicious circle.. can't sleep, get stressed and then you can't sleep. May Allah make it easy for you brother and give you inner peace ameen!!
Try a combination of everything suggested. Begin to wind down early and mentally prepare yourself for sleep.. have the bath with the oils etc, have a warm drink.. don't read or do anything stimulating. Whatever is in your lists of things you like to do before bed to relaxmake it almost like a ritual.
With the sleeping pills.. just take one if you have a prescription. You know sometimes just one is enough to bring the cycle back to normal again. If you have had a lot of nights of broken sleep you have to retrain your body to sleep again..
So a combination of all these things for a few nights, may. just help.. insha'Allah
you are in our duas insha'Allah

Excellent advice masha'Allah.
It's like I've created a mental block when it comes to falling asleep, my body has forgotten how to sleep naturally and has to wait for complete exhaustion to set in, which obviously isn't ideal.

You've tried all the obvious things brother, but have you tried counting sheep at night ... or is it cows?? .. lol ... j/k
Sometimes we just need that kick start ... perhaps a low dosage of sleeping pills for a couple of days may be okay ...
I went through a very similar phase .... but I knew the cause of my loss of sleep ... do find the source of the cause ... sleep deprivation, like you mentioned, can make you very ill, mentally and physically.
I'm pretty sure there I have a dua in my holy book of remedies for insomnia ... but I just cant remember where I placed that book :o
I'll try looking for it brother and posting the dua for you. I believe I have a dua saved on my desktop at work ... it was given to me by a friend when I had the same problem.

Close your eyes. Have a friend punch you Realllllllll hard, so your knocked out! And you'll automatically be sleeping. Watch 2001: A Space Odyssey and you'll be gone in 10 minutes! If still your unable to, get one of those Knock out Sleep potion things. You know the ones people put in a handkerchief and kidnap people with??

oh ok, longer than i expected. Hhhmmm interesting. I see what you mean about normal stresses and strains which the lack of sleep isnt helping with. Your mind is clearly too active and you need to find some way of switching off. I know this might sound abit stupid.. but can you not just try to make yourself switch off? :o like just try to block everything out- anything that doesnt need to be dealt with- just try not to think about.
Sister carols advice seems really good mashaAllah.
The sleeping duaa's that i know are the normal 2 that i read :o Let me see if i can find them for you inshaAllah.

:jkk: for your thoughts. If I'm truly honest there is something that is probably causing this, but I'm not prepared to discuss that here.

Are you finding that you're unable to sleep for more than short periods at all or are you finding that you become drowsy/sleepy at odd times, then force yourself to stay awake to get through work/college and can't get to sleep at night afterwards? Normally I'd presume you have this problem because something has stressed you out and that's affecting your ability to sleep but your replies give the impression that that's not the issue. Here are some ideas that spring to mind:
- When you're approaching bedtime, if there is anything on your mind that needs to get done the next day, leave a notepad and pen by your bed and write down the list of things to do so that you don't stay up worrying about whether you'll forget to do them or not and that can relieve tension
- Don't eat cheese in the evenings
- Within half an hour of bedtime, do not watch tv, make phone calls, play video games, go online or read any emotionally charged literature that can make you excited or upset. Instead try some meditation/relaxation or breathing exercises to help ease you into a more relaxed mode and if you can't sleep after half an hour then try them again.
- Try to nap during the day; even if you can't sleep just put your head down in a darkened room for half an hour to see if it relaxes you and play something relaxing in the background like light nasheeds (nothing with fast beats or emotionally charged lyrics, just simple easy listening type stuff)
- Learn to do meditation and/or relaxation or breathing exercises twice a day; once about half an hour before bedtime and once during your nap. Simply lying down doesn't make you relaxed, you need to learn to breathe properly and relax your body first as this will help remove the muscle tension you get from staying awake even if it doesn't result in sleep
- If you have wifi in the house, then switch it off at night. I could be completely wrong but some people have electromagnetic sensitivity and find that such devices can make them ill so for all we know this could be a symptom of something like that
Last of all, there are times when it's probably counterproductive to try and sleep. Sometimes if you lie awake for over an hour doing nothing wondering why you can't get to sleep especially if you have to wake early the next day then it can get to you and you've tried everything but are still wide awake. At such times, it's sometimes better to just stay up and do something that you'd normally do during the day such as some light reading or homework depending on how alert you feel cos' trying to MAKE yourself sleep can also be quite stressful and annoying.
If none of these things work, then I think you should consider going to the GP for some sleeping pills but just try them temporarily to see if they can help you set a routine. Ah yes, if you find after taking pills that you can't make any headway to sleep normally without them- THEN I'd strongly suggest that you ask your GP to refer you to a sleep clinic for a proper diagnosis and hopefully treatment as well.

Ya, I can understand, just as long as you know the cause, so you can work on it :)
I found the book ... it says
To Cure Insomnia ...
To enable a patient to get a good sleep, Surah Mujaadalah (Juz 28) should be recited next to the patient.
I'm sure you can download it online ... and you can keep playing it on your computer till you fall asleep
I have another dua at work ... having thought about it more, I can't remember if the dua was for insomnia or bad dreams ... I'll have a look tomorrow, InshaAllah.
Hope you get better soon brother, just remember, some things that have happened in the past cannot be changed and whats written for us in the future is at the will of Allah swt ...try not worrying too much. Easier said than done, I know.
May Allah swt grant you patience, strength, protection and guidance!
buy some lavender essential oil and scatter sum on your pillow before you go get in bed. really knocked me out first time i tried it! plus its gota nice scent to it

:wswrwb:
:sub: i've been having the same problem too and the lack of sleep makes me feel like i have zero concentration but the thing is try not to worry about it, think 'yeah 3 hours is enough to sleep' - think positive that way when you feel a migraine coming on (do you get migraines?) or feel annoyed think ':insha: i shall rectify this by doing something positive'
Please brother, try not to think negative about it cuz that will make you feel worse as if something might be wrong with you and you will be feeling down a lot afterwards. It happened to me and i just felt like this 'don't care' attitude to very important things in my life, i started to spend time in my own company and neglect friends but it made me feel worse overall.
Try to stay positive :insha:

Imam Tirmidhi writes that Abu Hurayrah (Allah be well pleased with him) reports that the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) said that whomsoever recites the first verses of Surat al-Mu’minun and then Ayat al-Kursi in the morning, will remain under the protection of Allah Most High until the evening. Similarly, whomsoever reads this during the night, will remain under the protection of Allah Most High until the morning.
Imam Abu Dawud writes that Wathala (Allah be well pleased with him) reported that one day a man came to the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) and asked, “What is the most excellent verse of the Quran?” The Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) replied, “Ayat al-Kursi.”

I'm sorry to hear you're having difficulty sleeping brother. I'm like this sometimes also, mind racing and thinking about all kinds of stuff. Sometimes it's not even due to stress, and it's just my head going on and on thinking about things. Anyway, I found an excellent herbal remedy that really helps me relax (NO!, I'm not talking about weed!).
There is a supplement called Valerian Root Extract, which has generally been used for millennia as a cure for insomnia and other sleeping disorders caused by restlessness and anxiety. It's also used as a muscle relaxant. I should also add that in is not an intoxicant, and is purely medicinal.
The chief constituent of Valerian is a yellowish-green to brownish-yellow oil which is present in the dried root. I should warn you though, that it doesn't smell all that great. So, unless you're a cat, the smell of valerian will not be nice. You might have to pinch your nose, until you get used to it.
I use it a couple of times a week. I've never tried synthetic sleeping pills, and never will. This works great for me. If you decide to try it, the smellier the valerian, the better the root extract, so go for the smelliest!. You should be able to find it at most health food stores. :)

Brother, try cutting out all caffine, take a brisk walk every night 2 hours before you usually go to bed at least, and try a herbal sleep aid like Kalms Nighttime which can help a lot but are not addictive like sleeping pills,
make duas and try to write down your worries before you get into bed, writing down your problems helps get them off your mind long enough to fall asleep.

Guidelines of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) concerning sleep (http://islamqa.com/index.php?ref=21216&ln=eng&txt=guidelines%20concerning%20sleep)
Question:
I want to know how the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to sleep. Did he sleep on a bed or on the floor? Did he used to recite a specific du’aa’ when he wanted to sleep?
Answer:
Praise be to Allaah.
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to sleep sometimes on a mattress, sometimes on a leather mat, sometimes on a mat made of palm leaves, sometimes on the floor, sometimes on a bed, sometimes on the sand, and sometimes on a black cloak.
‘Abbaad ibn Tameem said, narrating from his paternal uncles: I saw the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) lying on his back in the mosque, putting one leg on top of the other. (Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 475; Muslim, 2100).
His mattress was made of leather stuffed with palm fibres, and he had a coarse woollen cloth that he would fold over twice and sleep on.
The point is that he slept on a mattress and covered himself with a blanket. He said to his wives: “Jibreel never came to me whilst I was under the blanket of any one of you apart from ‘Aa’ishah.” (Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 3775).
His pillow was also leather stuffed with palm fibres.
When he went to bed to sleep, he would say: “Allaahumma bismika ahyaa wa amoot (O Allaah, in Your name I live and die).” (Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 7394). He used to put his hands together and blow into them, then recite Qul Huwa Allaahu ahad, Qul a’oodhu bi Rabb il-Falaq and Qul a’oodhu bi Rabb il-Naas , I seek refuge in You from the evil of all things You shall seize by the forelock [have total mastery over]. O Allaah, You are the First so there is nothing before You, and You are the Last so there is nothing after You. You are al-Zaahir [the greatest and highest] so there is nothing above You, and You are al-Baatin [aware of the subtlest secrets] so there is nothing closer than You. Settle our debt for us and spare us from poverty).” (Narrated by Muslim)
When he woke up from sleep he would say: [I]“Al-hamdu Lillaah alladhi ahyaana ba’d ma amaatana wa ilayhi al-nushoor (Praise be to Allaah Who has brought us back to life after causing us to die, and unto Him is the resurrection).” (Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 6312). Then he would clean his teeth using the miswaak, and recite the last ten aayahs from Soorat Aal ‘Imraan, from the verse (interpretation of the meaning):
“Verily, in the creation of the heavens and the earth…”
[Aal ‘Imraan 3:190-200]
And he would say: “Allaahumma laka al-hamd anta noor al-samawaati wa’l-ard wa man fihinna, wa laka al-hamd anta qayyim ul-samaawaati wa’l-ard wa man fihinna, wa laka al-hamd anta al-haqq wa wa’duka al-haqq wa liqaa’uka haqq wa’l-jannatu haqq wa’l-naaru haqq wa’l-nabiyoona haqq wa Muhammadun haqq wa’l-saa’atu haqq. Allaahumma laka aslamtu wa bika aamantu wa ‘alayka tawakkaltu wa ilayka anabtu wa bika khaasamtu wa ilayka haakamtu faghfir li ma qaddamutu wa ma akhartu wa ma asrartu wa ma a’lantu anta ilaahi laa ilaaha illa anta (O Allaah, to You be praise, You are the Light of the heavens and the earth and everyone in them. To You be praise, You are the Sustainer of the heavens and the earth and everyone in them. To You be praise, You are the Truth (al-Haqq), Your promise is true, the meeting with You is true, Paradise is true, Hell is true, the Prophets are true, Muhammad is true and the Hour is true. O Allaah, to You I submit myself, in You I believe, in You I put my trust, to You I repent, by Your help I strive (against Your enemies) and to You I refer for judgement, so forgive me my past and future sins, what I do in secret and what I do openly. You are my God and there is no god but You).” (Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 1120).
He used to sleep during the first part of the night and get up to pray during the last part. Sometimes he would stay up late to deal with the interests of the Muslims. His eyes slept but his heart did not. When he slept, they would not wake him up; he would be the one to wake up.
When he stopped to rest at night during a journey, he would lie down on his right side, and if he stopped to rest just before dawn he would prop his head up on his forearm, resting it in his palm. This was narrated by al-Tirmidhi.
His sleep was of the best length and it was the most beneficial of sleep. The doctors say that it is one-third of the night and day, namely eight hours.

Sidi you should get tested for sleep apnea more than 12 million people suffer from this in the States alone...ask the doctor if they can give you a test called the polysomnogram.
I consulted Doctor Google about sleep apnea and alhamdulillah, it's symptoms are almost entirely unrelated to mine.
:jkk: for the help.....and alhamdulillah for me not being a hypochondriac.:)
Here is the other dua I was on about last night ... Like I said in one of my earlier posts, I cant remember if this dua is for Insomnia or bad dreams ... as I was having both at the same time ... but the title does say Dua for sleep ...
Dua before sleep
Bismika Rabbiy wada’tu janbi wa bika arfa’uhu fa in amsakta nafsi farhamha wa in arsaltaha fahfazha bima tahfazu bihi ‘ibaadaka al-saaliheen
(In Your name my Lord I lie down and in Your name I rise, so if You should take my soul then have mercy upon it, and if you should return it then protect it in the manner You protect Your righteous slaves).”
:jkk:
May Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala put barakah in all your good deeds. Ameen
Brother, try cutting out all caffine, take a brisk walk every night 2 hours before you usually go to bed at least, and try a herbal sleep aid like Kalms Nighttime which can help a lot but are not addictive like sleeping pills,
make duas and try to write down your worries before you get into bed, writing down your problems helps get them off your mind long enough to fall asleep.
hth inshaallah.
I rarely drink caffeine after 8 or 9 and exercise is certainly not a problem, since I walk usually walk everywhere. Also, I tried Kalms, they were as effective as a chocolate fireguard. I think I may need something a little stronger, like a sledgehammer.
sleeping pills?
OK, hands up who didn't read the post before replying?
When he went to bed to sleep, he would say: “Allaahumma bismika ahyaa wa amoot (O Allaah, in Your name I live and die).” (Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 7394). He used to put his hands together and blow into them, then recite Qul Huwa Allaahu ahad, Qul a’oodhu bi Rabb il-Falaq and Qul a’oodhu bi Rabb il-Naas [i.e., the last three soorahs of the Qur’aan), then he would wipe his hands over as much of his body as he could, starting with his head and face, and the front part of his body. He would do that three times.
He used to sleep on his right side, putting his right hand under his right cheek, then he would say: “Allaahumma qini ‘adhaabaka yawma tab’ath ‘ibaadaka (O Allaah, protect me from Your punishment on the Day You resurrect Your slaves).”
And when he went to bed he used to say: “Al-hamdu Lillaah alladhi at’amanaa wa saqaanaa wa kafaanaa wa aawanaa fakam mimman laa kaafi lahu wa laa mu’wi (All praise is for Allaah, Who fed us and gave us to drink, and Who is sufficient for us and has sheltered us, for how many have none to suffice them or shelter them).” This was narrated by Muslim, who also narrated that he used to say when he went to bed:
“Allaahumma Rabb al-samawaati wa’l-ard wa Rabb al-‘arsh il-‘azeem, Rabbaanaa wa Rabba kulli shay’in, Faaliq al-habb wa’l-nawa wa munzil al-Tawraati wa’l-Injeeli wa’l-Furqaan, a’oodhu bika min sharri kulli shay’in anta aakhidhun bi naasiyatihi. Allaahumma anta al-awwal fa laysa qablaka shay’un, wa anta al-aakhir fa laysa ba’daka shay’un, wa anta al-zaahir fa laysa fawqaka shay’un wa anta al-baatin fa laysa doonaka shay’un. Iqdi ‘annaa al-dayna wa aghninaa min al-faqri (O Allaah, Lord of the seven heavens and the exalted Throne, our Lord and Lord of all things, splitter of the seed and the date-stone, Revealer of the Tawraat and the Injeel and the Furqaan [Qur’aan], I seek refuge in You from the evil of all things You shall seize by the forelock [have total mastery over].

It's hard enough just being a single parent, but being zombie-fied, mentally half-asleep and physically drained only adds to the stresses and strains.
But alhamdulillah for He sends us these tests for a reason and never gives us difficulties with which we cannot cope.
In the early hours of this morning I was reading from "Faza'il-e-Amaal" and "Hayatus Sahabah" about the many hardships the beloved sahabah radhiyAllahu anhum had to go through, simply because of their belief in Rasoolullah salAllahu alayhe wa salaam as a Prophet of Allah ta'ala. Subhan'Allah they endured this suffering and the sacrifices they made, solely because of their love for Allah ta'ala and so that future generations, including us alhamdulillah, would have the knowledge we needed to incorporate into our daily lives to be saved from the fires of jahannum insha'Allah.
The sahabah radhiyAllahu anhum suffered unimaginable torments, yet always bore that hardship without complaint.
Suffice to say, I felt very pathetic for bemoaning my lack of sleep subhn'Allah. Although none of us could ever come close to the strength and piety of the sahabah radhiyAllahu anhum, we must all endeavour, nonetheless, to endure any hardships we suffer, no matter how large or small, with all the courage we can muster, blessed with the knowledge that after hardship, comes ease and with suffering, comes reward insha'Allah.
:jkk: for all your advice and kind words masha'Allah.:)
May Allah ta'ala lighten all your loads, bless your speech and actions with hekmah and remove all obstacles from your paths. May Allah ta'ala give us all the tawfeeq, courage and sabr to endure hardship without complaint and treat all our tests and trials from Him, the Most High, as a blessing. Ameen.

This is guranteed to work
1)Dont keep a watch or Clock in your bedroom.
2)Never sit up.
3) when you Start getting anxious about how little you have slept. convince yourself that time goes really slow when you cant sleep. If it feels like an hour its usuallys 10 minutes.
4) when lying in bed awake close yours eyes and think this boring I am going to have a dream..... let your imagination wonder and dream up a story and carry on with the dream dont come back in the bedroom however silly your litlle mind story is going. keep doing this even if your not sleeping
5)never look at how light or dark it is outside, even when it is getting lighter Pretend that it is a really early dawn break and you have hours left to get up for work.
6) if you feel like opening your eyes keep them closed and imagine the image of what it is you want to look at and imagine the scene with your eyes closed. play that as a mind game.
7) in all your mind dreams images never let it be practical let it be imaginary e.g. super hero, travelling in heaven/hell, speaking to dead personalities and what you would talk to them about
Right wake up now its morning and time to get up for work
