Title: Six steps for a happy family
Reference: Tafsir of Surat Ar-Rum
Category: Tafseer/Khutbah
Quran: "Wamin ayatihi an khalaqa lakum min anfusikum azwajan
litaskunoo ilayha wajaAAala baynakum mawaddatan warahmatan inna fee
thalika laayatin liqawmin yatafakkaroona " (Surah Ar – Room, Verse 21)
Rough Translation: "Amongst his Ayat, is that he created for you, from
yourselves, a partner, so that you may be comfortable/peaceful with
(sakan), and he placed between you (2 things), Mawadda (LOVE) Rahma
(MERCY)."
This Ayah, is used in Weddings, to announce or address weddings.
This Ayah constitutes the basics in Family, and is a recipe for a
happy family.
Often society struggles, and struggle of a society is based on
struggle of a family, because the family is usually the "unit of a
society".
When the prophet (pbuh) started to correct society, he started himself
as a role model to achieve this purpose by; Wiping the trash infront
of the neigbours.
If you want to see a change, then you have to be it.
Why does Allah swt say "Min Anfusikum (from amongst yourself?)
The opinion of the "Mufasireen" are
1) Hawwa (A.S) was created from the Rib of Adam (A,S).
2) From your own species. (Your marrying humans, not Jinn, Animals)
3) He created spouses for you, like you, what this means is "that you
both have been created for each other, and in order for the marriage
to work, you both have to compromise, negotiate".
The key here is "understanding" and "co-operation".
In Pre-Islamic society, woman was thought as a burden on society.
Society was based on "wars" and "robbery", and women couldn't take
part in both, so they saw her as a burden. They use to "bury them
alive", and see them as "non productive part of society".
But Allah swt says in the Quran, that "oh people, we have created you
from one woman and man, and distributed you into nations and tribes,
the best among you is the one which has Taqwa (note gender
discrimination is not done here)".
Until recently, women could not even vote, Islam came to say "people
are equal".
"Sakan" in the Arabic language, means "absolute peace and quiet-ness".
"Sakan" also means home of the human being.
Allah swt, calls the husband and wife, both Sakan, so when you go
home, that place must be a place of peace and quietness, so must
you/wife be a source of peace and quietness.
People often associate, happiness, with "money", "place you live",
"food you eat".
The prophet (pbuh) is the best of creation, what was his house?
1 room made of mud and clay, his ceiling made of leaves, a room where
Jibreel (A.S) use to serve, Subhanallah. 1 area for water, 1 area for
cooking, and that was his whole home (pbuh).
What did Fatima (R.A) get when she got married?
This is the simplicity the prophet pbuh tried to lead us to !
The Ayah further says "he placed amongst you 2 things, and these are
key to success in a marriage, "LOVE" and "MERCY".
Look at the mercy of the prophet (pbuh) with Khadija (R.A), he would
stand up for Khadija (R.A) He (pbuh) use to serve himself, in the house!
He would take care of his own shoes, and sow his own clothes.
Partnership is the only way to succeed in the marriage.
1. You need to make the right decision before you marry, and you
should have the Taqwa, and look for the Taqwa in the other person your
marrying.
2. You need to be the role model in the home "in the night, the
prophet pbuh would wake Aisha (R.A) up". How can you tell others to do
things, if you don't do yourself.
3. Make Dhikr in the home. The home is not just the walls, but your
home is a place for happiness, an institute, a place for elevating
yourself spiritually.
Hadith: If a man enters the home, and remembers Allah swt, and
remembers him when he eats, the shaytaan tells his people, you don't
have a place to stay, and vica versa.
4. Enable the Quran in your home. Do not turn your home into
Grave Yards!
Any house which has "Surah Al Baqarah" recited, the Shaytaan will stay
away from your home.
5. Invite pious people into your home. Look at Nuh (A.S) dua. He asked
Allah swt, to forgive him, his family and the pious people who
entered his home.
6. In your home, as the father, you are not responsible for writing
the bad deeds all the time. Everyone is responsible and follow up on
your responsibilities, fulfil them. You all must fulfil your
responsibilities. Show care about your children and others children,
hug them, give them kisses. The prophet pbuh loved kids and played
with Hassan (R.A)and Hussein (R.A) much. The children are the future
of the Ummah.
If there are any faults in the postings above, they are due to myself
and not from the origional khutba of Shaykh.
May Allah(swt) continue to elevate the Maqam of our shaykh and their
Noble family and give us all the ability to benefit from their wealth
of knowledge and wisdom, and forgive me for my shortcomings.
Ameen
