In Islam dowry is not the same as the British word dowry. probably shouldn't even use that word.

In Islam the "dowry" (mahr in Arabic) is a gift from the husband to the wife when they get married. In the old fashioned British/European version, the dowry went to the wife's father, or the other way round sometimes in some cultures, i.e. the father pays the husband. In Islam, the dowry goes from husband to wife, and its hers to spend as she pleases.

I once heard Shaikh Ibn Othaimeen RA telling a story of a man who married his daughter to a brother for 1 S.R ONLY. The Shaikh was the one who did the Nikah. He said when I asked him about the mahr he replied '1 S.R only!' Then the Shaikh carried on advising people to reduce the mahr....
there, indeed, was a man in Sharjah who married off his daughter for AED 1.00 only. The mehr his son in law paid was AED 1.00 as well. Quite symbolic, the newspaper reported

Akhi the basic Idea is that it is a Gift that should be given, be that Money or the Quran, I recall hearing that a Sahabiya said to the effect that she would accept (the Non-Muslim person proposing to him) his acceptance of Islam as her Mehr ...

that was One beautiful mehr, I must say ...

lastly a Mehr can give Financial Security if it is a Large amount in Money, but that is already Obligated upon the Man to do for the entirety of his life, he has to provide for all financial affairs ...

very few are racist..really very few..ive just come from saudi..and i met so many..none were racist..infact..some became friends.

its just this division..no communication..language barrier..some people are stubborn.

i remember tho..i was at kfc ..and this bengali worker wouldnt serve a pakistani woman cos she had 500 note. i went up to him and told him off..spoke to his manager..and sorted it out..their own asian nationalities are rude too.
