The 2nd righteous Leader of the Believers, Ameer-ul Mu'mineen, Hadhrat Umar (Radi Allah Anho) while leading the Fajr Salaah, Hadhrat Umar (Radi Allah Anho) was stabbed six times by a fire-worshipper, Abu Lu'lu' Feroz, a Persian slave, on Wednesday 27th Dhul Hajj, the year 23 A.H. He fell to the ground unable to continue with the Salaah, and, so, therefore, Hadhrat Abdur Rahman bin Auf (Radi Allah Anho) continued leading the Salaah and completed it. Hadhrat Umar (Radi Allah Anho) was then carried to his house. Hadhrat Umar (Radi Allah Anho) asked, 'Who is my assasin?' 'Abu Lu'lu,' the people replied. 'Allah Taa'la be thanked! It is not a Muslim who has shed my blood', said Hadhrat Umar (Radi Allah Anho). The wounds however proved fatal and on the 1st of Muharram, in the year 24 A.H. he bade farewell to this temporary world.
Al Hamdu Lillaah, he is resting by the side of our Beloved Prophet, Hadhrat Muhammad-ur Rasulullaah (Sallallaahu Alayhi Wasallam)!
The martyrdom of Hadhrat Umar (Radi Allah Anho) was a great loss to the world and Muslims were shattered upon the martyrdom of Hadhrat Umar (Radi Allah Anho), yet, we are guilty of NOT observing the day of Shahaadat-e-Umar (Radi Allah Anho).

Jazakallah for the that brother. He truly was an exceptional being. It's amazing how the Prophet (SAW) forged a man of such character. Inshallah if I ever have a son, I will name him Umar. A while back, I read a book about him, called Omar the Great, and I think it was by someone called Shibli Nowmani, and in the book he described so many administrative reforms and innovations that Umar (RA) instituted. It really was a detailed book of his achievements (detailed for me anyway). His wisdom in recognizing the importance of his assailant being a non-muslim, was quite something. He really was a gem of a man. If only every generation had an Umar!

You are absolutely right, Baybars! Hadhrat Umar (Radi Allah Anho) was indeed as he was because he was the result of a supplication made by the Holy Prophet, Hadhrat Muhammad-ur Rasulullaah (Sallallaahu Alayhi Wasallam). He (Sallallaahu Alayhi Wasallam) asked for one out of the two to serve Islam; Amar ibn-e-Hishaam (Abu Jahl) or Umar ibn-e-Khataab - obvioulsy, Allah Taa'la chose Hadhrat Umar (Radi Allah Anho)!

Is that what Faruq/Farooq means?

Assalam u Alaikum,
I have read/heard somewhere that when Hazrat Umar[Radi Allah Anho] was hit by Abu Lu'Lu Feroz Hazrat Umar [Radi Allah Anho] said "The dog has hit me". Is this correct?

SubhanALLAH brothers and sisters, there's something more to his martyrdom we should realise.
He (RadiALLAHu Anhu) would ask du'aa that ALLAH should make him a Shaheed in the city of Rasoolullah (SalALLAHu Alayhi Wa Sallam). His daughter (i think) or other relative used to ask how is that possible as this was the capital of the Khilafah... So how would an army get there etc without crossing the other lands... Seems unlikely eh?
But see how ALLAH (Ta'aala) fulfilled the du'aa of Al-Farooq (RadiALLAHu Anhu) and at Fajr time Inside the Masjid too.
So ASK ALLAH... Put your hands up and beg with conviction for ALLAH hears the prayers and is the only answerer of your prayers so ask Him and May He (Ta'aala) grant Shahadah for you and for me, ameen.
