This is probably going to sound really silly but does anyone know of any good ways to get rid of stubborn spots? I never had spots as a teenager and now I cant seem to get rid of them :( Its really getting me down because I'm quite fair they show up a lot and I've had a couple of people comment :(
I've been to the doctors and they gave me this lotion stuff but it contained alcohol so I stopped using it. Also a friend who is a beauty therapist told me it was too harsh for my skin on the face. I've used all sorts of different products, exfoliating apricot scrub, nivea gel wash, clearasil, simple etc and use different ones each day. I saw a skin specialist who gave me this cream wash and moisturiser and lotion for spots and I spent a lot of money on these products but they didnt seem to help, also I realised the lotion had some sort of alcohol in it so I was reluctant to keep using it when I found it wasnt really doing much. Recently someone told me that I should use dettol soap and use it for a couple of months and that would help, its just it seems like I buy all these things and they dont work or they just keep the spots away temporarily till I get another outbreak. Also the spots leave blemishes on my skin (and I think thats why they reappear) but nothing seems to get rid of these either.
I have a fairly varied diet, fruit, veg, meat, milk, the normal stuff. I only eat ready meal type stuff very occasionally and I dont eat very oily or fried food very much, only occasionally. I prob dont drink enough water but I am trying my best to change this. I do drink juice and tea.
The doctor and skin specialist told me that the spots prob appear due to stess but I cant be stressed all the time! They alsoe said that if something around me has changed e.g starting a new job that I felt anxious or soemthing about maybe this was why, doesnt really apply to me though. Theres just no pattern with the outbreaks and I'm at a loss about what to do apart from feel miserable. I want to get married and am looking to meet prospectives and I feel this is going to knock the little confidence I have entirely.

sorry for the long rant.

Problem skin can be related to hormonal imbalances so really i would suggest seing a dermatologist.

Make sure any product you do use on your face is lanolin and perfume free. Dermalogica is pricey but very good, never had any problems with it alhamdolillah.

if you PM me i can give you a link to a website that sells and posts to UK but wont here cos of erm...inappropriate images :p

oh and do dua, science later, dua first.

salaam sis, i feel for you I really do because I have spots too! I always have, on and off and am now in my late twenties. so..
1) Spots don't have to get you down, come on if you think about it there are much worse things that could happen!
2) It will only knock your confident if you let it
3) when you look in the mirror, try to ignore the spots
4) who you are is not defined by something as trivial as spots
5) on a more practical level, go as simple as you can. By trying lots of different products (and I used to) you're not really doing yourself any favours. Develop a basic skincare regime that you stick to EVERY morning and night- work it out so it suits your skin. I use a cream cleanser with a muslin cloth and don't moisturise because I have oily skin but sometimes I use gentle night cream, not often.
6) As long as you have a basically healthy lifestyle, there isn't really much else you can do. Hormones are usually responsible here. why try to control that which you can't? Life is too short!
7) if someone is superficial enough to care that you have spots, why would you even want to waste your time on them?
8) Most people are far too busy worrying about their own physical flaws to notice other's. That's a fact!
9) Embrace the spots I say! who cares? it's like being a teenager again, but without the angst. I'm spotty and proud- yeh!
10) But for the times when I don't particularly want to look like an acne ridden teenager, I might use some mineral foundation- it's good for your skin. I don't use it to conceal the spots, just to even the complexion to make them a bit less prominent. But it's a hassle with making wudu so I usually don't bother.
11) Honestly, dear sis, please don't worry so much. I find that my spots are particularly bad in the winter cos the cold outside and heaters indoors is soooo bad for the skin. Insh'Allah when the summer comes we'll have nice clear complexions! xxxx

sorry for the long rant. You remind me of me afew years ago. I will give you 3 valuable things that have a very high possibility of working. Before I do, regarding all the products you purchased, most of them aren't good and hardly ever do the job, esp. for acne so don't waste your time on them. Do not use lotions as some of them slow down healing and help cause scarring.

The first is vitamin B5, this is a very good vitamin for acne suffers and a very high chance it will work effectively. You will need atleast 200mg tablets and start off with taking around 500mg-600mg a day. Try that for 2 weeks and if it improves your condition then you can stick to it for a few months and lower it, but if it doesn't then up the dose to 800-1000mg and try that for 2 weeks etc etc. You can up it up to 3000-5000mg a day. Here (http://www.hollandandbarrett.com/pages/product_detail.asp?pid=227) are the tablets I am currently taking from holland and barrets, they are 500mg vitamin B5 (Pantothenic acid) tablets. So if you do buy them, take one tablet a day for 2/3 weeks and see how it goes. If its working but not enough then up it to two tablets a day (one in the morning, one before bed).

The second thing you can try (I haven't tried it yet but it might help you) is cupping/Hijamah. This will purify your blood and InshaAllah lesson your acne.

The third is Aloe Vera, by this I do not mean one of the shelf products, I mean the actual leaf. Buy an Aloe Vera leaf (about 80-100cm long) and before you go to sleep cut a small piece off, squeeze the thick liquid out and put it on the affected areas. It will dry within 10-20minutes. This is good for stopping outbreaks and excellent for healing.

This is stuff that has worked for me, its natural and 100 times more effective than all these soaps, over the counter products etc. Also, remember to change your bed sheets every week and always use a clean towel.

Hope this helps.

Well from what I've heard on random TV shows (lol), they suggest cutting out oily food, eat tonnes of fresh fruit and veg, cut back on sweets, tea, alcohol and smoking, and drink lots and lots of water.

I want to add that you can also buy an aloe vera plant(if you cant get hold of a fresh leaf), I have a small one at home and whenever I need it I break a little off and put it on the affected area. So if you cannot find the leaf(here (http://www.dkimages.com/discover/previews/1008/50263059.JPG). Ignore the brown tablets/stuff), then nip over to a gardening store and ask them if they have any aloe vera plants(here (http://i.ehow.com/images/GlobalPhoto/Articles/2072073/AloeVeraPlant_Full.jpg)). If you do get a leaf, they will grow very quickly, so you will need to get them a bigger pot and a special type of soil (mixture of soil/sand etc), that you can ask the people working at the garden store for assistance, but they can grow very large under the right conditions.

The plants are alot better anyway, they will last much longer and won't die out like the leaves.

And Vitamin B5, if you want to get rid of your acne then you will need to take it in large doses, at least 200mg. Depending on your situation if you acne is really bad then you will need (likely) more than that, 500mg+.

The best combo. for me was using Aloe Vera/B5 at once, I would hardly get any break outs.

If you need anymore advice then you can PM me and I'd be more than glad to help you.

yeah, I know all that sugary stuff I eat ain't good for me but I just can't help it!

Btw, with regards to vitamin B5, I don't know about it's effectiveness but I do know that you should avoid taking vitamins in isolation so maybe you should take a multivitamin that has that in there?

go back to the GP and tell them why you stopped the lotion on your face, it could be caused by a hormone imbalance sister which can be corrected inshaallah.

Also see a homeopath, there are muslim ones listed in Muslim Directory, who make up tintures in gylcerine not alcohol.

inshaallah in the mean time drink at least 2 litres of water a day and eat well, make lots of duas inshaallah your problem will be resolved.

The lotion only only made things a little better but not permanently. It smelled like alcohol :( and I didnt like that at all. I know some people say as its not intoxicating its ok to use stuff with alcohol in but I just dont like the idea of using stuff with it in, esp when there must be other stuff available.

I havnt tried antibiotics beacsue the doctor said that it wasnt that bad, everyone I see about it puts it down to stress and tells me to lose weight, the thing is there is no pattern to suggest either of these are the problem or that diet is the problem. We eat a varied diet, yes I do have fried food and chocolate but I also eat fruit every single day so I get my five a day! and my parents cook different things every day mashallah so we dont eat one type of food in excess, I really dont think having two pieces of chicken from chicken cottage once a month is going to do me serious harm!
I think the problem is hormonal (every problem stuff I come up seems to give this as the cause, my mum says that after you have children hormones sort themselves out lol, another reason to get married quickly!) Its just irritating because this stuff never occured before so why now? nothing, and I mean nothing changed! not my diet, weight, life situation and yet this happens.
I dont know if this is ok but is it allowed to put some sort of make up on to hide spots? I honestly dont even know how to put makeup on :o I've never worn it. I guess it would still come under making yourself look beautiful so this wouldnt be allowed.

I dont really know much about cupping, I've heard of it though and read theres lots of benefits. is it something you can do yourself or have to get done? I can try the vitamin tablet, Inshallah shall have a look for these tmrw if I can.

I know there are things far worse than spots, its just I concious of it as people are commenting. tbh I'm more intrigued as to why now? and whats causing it! lol Dont get me wrong I am grateful that I dont have any major illness Alhamdulillah, I know people suffer with a lot worse and my problem is not worth even mentioning in comparison.

I will keep making dua, I know this is the first thing to do before anything else :) I think I need to go to Saudi again, when we were there the hot weather and drinking loads and loads of zamzam had a really good effect on my skin and it got really cleansed!

Jazakallah for all the advice :)

Btw, with regards to vitamin B5, I don't know about it's effectiveness but I do know that you should avoid taking vitamins in isolation so maybe you should take a multivitamin that has that in there?Vitamin B5 (Pantothenic Acid) is a water soluble vitamin. It's true that if you are going to take it for long term periods that you should try and get all the other nessasary B-vitamins, so you can take multivitamin tablets along side with the B5 tablets or try and get them from foods containing them, but remember that multivitamin tabs only contain 10-20mg of B5 which is no way near the required amount.

Vitamin B5 (Pantothenic acid) converts into Coenzyme A which breaks down fatty acids, thus preventing oily skin and therefore diminishing the breeding ground for spots. It is definately worth a try.

feelinglow
If you do buy them, then look for pantothenic acid, that is the name they are usually listed as. Depending on the tablets (if they are 200mg or 500mg) take one a day, your outbreaks might increase for a day or two before you start seeing noticable decreases. If your seeing benefits but not fast enough then you can up the intake to 800-1000mg a day (around 4 200mg tablets or 2 500mg tablets. Remember to spread the doses out). Once your spots have gone then lower the dose to between 200-500mg a day, stay on that dose for about 2 weeks and then start taking a tablet on day 1 and miss it day 2, take it on day 3 and miss day 4 etc

You can take upto 10,000mg of B5 a day, this is called a mega dose and should only be done for short term. A small percentage of people have reported side efforts at these doses such as hair loss. I would only recommend these doses if you had very serious acne.

For the blemishes/marks use aloe vera.

What is the condition of your skin? Do you have oily skin? Dry skin?

Please do keep me updated on your progess InshaAllah. Make sure the tablets are suitable for veggies.

You can get cupping done in saudi.

its a hormone imbalance that can cause acne amoungst other symptoms, its easily controlled with diet and exercise, but sometimes the doc will offer u the pill...say no.!!

i notice someone has mentioned cupping, it could be helpful, i know a sister in east london who does it, if u pm me i'll give u her details inshaallah.

One word of advice, don't keep changing products, soaps, cleansers and the like. This will dry and damage your skin and probably aggrivate your problem. If you can afford it, go see a dermatologist privately, you won't have to wait as long and they tend to have more time for you and take you more seriously than the NHS. Thats my experience.
