Assalamu 'alaykum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh

The piece is from قصص النبيين للأطفال (Stories of the Prophets for Children), and the complete line goes like this:

وفاقوهم في العقل والصناعة، فكانوا ينحتون من الجبال بيوتاً واسعة جميلة، وينقشون في الحجارة وقد لان لهم الحجر بعقلهم وصناعتهم فيصنعون به ما يصنع الانسان بالشمع.

It is reference to the people of 'Aad and Thamud. Thamud came after 'Aad and sort of followed in their footsteps. Though they were in many ways alike, "They (thamud) were superior to them ('Aad) in intelligence and craft. They used to carve out from mountains spacious and beautiful houses, and make engravings on stone. Stone to them, because of their intelligence and (industrial) craft, became soft, and they would make / do with it what people would make / do with wax". The part in red is the translation of the entire Arabic line that I provided. Without a bit of context it would have been difficult to know who or what is meant by the Damirs (personal pronouns) in:

وفاقوهم في العقل والصناعة،... فيصنعون به ما يصنع الانسان بالشمع.
