View Full Version : Okay this is just plain weird
Last night I was up watching TV and at around 3am the doorbell rang. I wasn't expecting anyone at that time and as I paused to consider whether to open the door or not it rang again. Then I heard my dad's footsteps upstairs and felt reassured that he's awake so I went and answered the door. I looked outside and saw this young Asian guy, probably in his early twenties. When he saw me he asked for a glass of water so I told him to wait and closed the door again. I quickly glanced around the dining room and found a half full evian bottle so I picked that up and gave it to him- then shut the door and sat down to continue watching TV (at which point my dad asked me who it was and I told him).
Anyway I thought that was the end of it but when I finished watching TV and was on my way to bed, I found this posted through the letterbox (a mobile number has also been scribbled down on there twice but I've blanked that out on the image below):

I just had to share that with you cos' it's the weirdest thing that's happened in a long time.

You must live in a very safe and strange area if you feel brave enough to open your door for a stranger at 3 am and someone comes to the door to ask for a glass of water at that time.
Did you first open the door for him? That's very dangerous. Or did you see him through your window and he raised his voice to ask you through the door?
Mashallah though. May Allah reward you for quenching a stranger's thirst. Ameen.
Don't know what to make of the number. Did your father call it already or is he planning to?

freakky...I wouldn't have opened the door and I'm a guy...
Looks like somebody saw you at the station.
In this (http://www.ummah.com/forum/showthread.php?t=153460) vein :D
Yes dearie kinda odd but like eemaan said dont be opening doors at that time of night! The guy must have been really thirsty and the note was his way of saying thanks (link not working) seeing as he probably had more sense than to knock on door again and say it..

That's precisely why I didn't post the number- in case someone calls him and he thinks it's me and causes further problems.

Yes alhamdullilah it is a fairly safe neighbourhood and it is also pretty strange because this is probably the 6th time in the last 10 years that we've had an unexpected knock at the door at that hour and it's always turned out to be from someone harmless alhamdullilah (and I've never opened the door myself at that hour unless someone else is awake in the house).
Did you first open the door for him? That's very dangerous. Or did you see him through your window and he raised his voice to ask you through the door?
I opened the door first cos when I looked through the window I couldn't see him as he was standing a few yards away from the door (so at first I didn't even know if the person was still there).
ahh the guy was fresh, prolly a cultural gesture? You an tell from the slanted handwrting and english.
Yeah I guessed that from the note as well- just the fact that he uses the word 'dear' says it all;) I looked on the back of the note and it turns out the note was written on the back of the top part of a letter (ie the part containing an address). The name on the letter is Adnan and the address is around the corner from me although I don't know if that's his actual name and addy or not.
I haven't yet told my parents about the note (in case they chuck it away) because I wanted to scan it and show you all first. I'm thinking of telling my Dad and then chucking away the note and just putting it down to being "one of those things". I don't want my Dad to call the number because he's a big softie so I don't think he'd succeed in scaring the guy off.

Im thinkin a stalker, just makin sure his target is still around..and if it has happened 6 times in 10 yrs maybe this is the kinda kick he needs to survive for every one an half yrs...or maybe a shy guy who follows u from ages but u didnt notice..:hidban:
Maybe  he wanted to propose earlier in the night :inlove:, but couldnt muster the courage, so he geed himself up, by 3am he mustered enough courage. Then when you opened the door, he didnt expect it , so he got all dry in the mouth and instead asked for water...I wonder how the events would have unfolded if your dad opened the door?
mumkin a bit far fetched, but hey who asks for water at 3am..........

On a serious note sis, you shouldn't be opening doors to someone at 3. I don't open the door at 3 IN THE AFTERNOON except if I've been told by my mum that someone is coming over.

Na'am it is odd- insha'allah like others have said please be advised not to open the door to strangers at such hours, leave that to your father.
If he just left a jezak'allah note so as to not disturb you all would somewhat make sense- but leaving the number as if he wanted you to call was not good.
May Allah (swt) reward you for quenching his thirst- Ameen.
Hmmm maybe the bro is looking for a generous, compassionate and brave wife...maybe your dad should give him a call :p
Maybe he does this type of thing to other females too? I would avoid him at all costs.

I vl give him the benefit of doubt.
You shud ask ur da to call him & find out if he's ok & if he's need of help.
May Allah choose ur family to help a muslim in need. This could be the direct ticket to Jannah, AllahuAlim.

No no no, this is the first time I've seen this guy. The previous occassions when we've had an unexpected knock on the door in the middle of the night it's always been someone else knocking for some other reason:
- one time it was a drunk guy who came to the wrong house and I didn't bother opening the door cos' no one else was awake so I opened the upstairs window, saw that it was a stranger and told him to go away
- one time it was my brother cos' he stayed out late and forgot his key
- At least twice some idiot with a grudge (we believe it was the ex husband of a family friend) prank called taxis to turn up here between 2-4am (but as soon as we called the police the prank taxis stopped alhamdullilah)
- one time it was the son of a family friend who said he'd missed the night train/bus and needed to borrow cash for a cab to his home in a neighbouring town (so my Dad gave him £20 and sent him on his way)
And the 6th time it was this guy asking for water. Oh btw the rest of the note is saying "thanks for the water" in Urdu not Arabic.

Have you seen him before?

Gee thanks:o No I haven't seen him before or since. I never called that number either. For all I know, he might have been a very honest and decent guy but too many negative experiences with freshies on msn were what really prompted me to decide not to call that number.
