Salam alaykum all,

I have received a bit of information through contacting belmarsh, etc, about the rules relating to sending letters to Category A prisoners, that others who want to write might find useful.

When writing, you should do the following :-

a. Write their prison Number as well as their name
b. include a return name and postcode both on the letter as well as the envelope ( i have heard that this may not be necessary, however there is no accounting for over-zealous prison officers who want to ruin someones day)
c. Send any mail at the very least "recorded - signed for". I have heard that in this case, the prison must open the letter in their presence.
d. the envelope size should not be bigger than A5
e. Letters can be handwritten or typed

Also, the prisoners cannot receive, in most cases :-

a. Stamps or self addressed-envelopes
b. books, tapes, cds, clothes, etc. Instead, these must be ordered using their own private cash (more about that later )

Sending money :-

Money is the only way that prisoners can get the resources to write back to you, as they cannot receive stamps. to send :-

a. Dont send cash, as it may go missing
b. cheques take 10 days to clear
c. Most efficient is postal order. Check with the prison on how these should be completed, however in most cases you :-

i. make PO payable to HM Prison Service
ii. On the back of the PO, you must write prisoners name and number
iii. on the back of the PO, you must also write your name and address.

Hope this helps inshallah, please let me know if you think anything is inaccurate

Walaikum salam,

When writing, I believe there must be a return address in order for the brothers to recieve the letter and in Belmarsh, they can not write back to PO Box addresses but this differs from prison to prison, in fact at times this differs from person to person also so at times it can be dificult to get it right so as posted on the initial thread, do check with the prison first.

Postal orders are normally made payable to the governer of the prison, frexample "The Governer, Belmarsh Prison" for a prisoner in Belmarsh. Cat A's are normally shipped around a lot once sentenced (not so for certain terrorists) so maybe a different procedure for them, but I doubt it. The rest is right though.

HMPS, (HM Prison Service) is what it should have written on it.

We had a Cat AA brother telling us recently that he didn't want mail sent as recorded delivery. Reason being that because the mail has to be opened in the presence of the prisoner, such mail is only given out once a week.

I'd advise using recorded delivery sparingly.

Salams,

Interesting, seems like a new tactic. Theres no reason for the prison service to give them this mail only once a week, they're there giving the mail out anyway!

Seems can't win either way. I have heard of mail going missing when not sent recorded, whereas now they are restricting the mail when it is sent.

Inshallah I will write to the prison asking why this is the case.

And Also It is Not Advisable To Put Your Real Names on Letters, Especially If Your Not Family.

And Please Be Careful What You Write. Some Who Write Letters To Imprisoned Muslims Tend To Write Things Which Will Get The Muslim, To Whom The Letter is Marked To In Trouble and Will Affect Their Case. So Don't Write Things Like: "This Is Your Jihad" - Even If It Is Innocent Wordings In Your Eyes - To the Evil People, it is merely Evidence Which Will Be Used Against The Defendant In Court During Course of Trial.
