Assalamu Alaykum,
I would like to ask the sisters of this forum, what motivates you to study further, after secondary school? Is it because you want a job? Or you want to be successful in a field? Please share.

Hi,
Is this questions intended for muslims sisters only?
If not, I can participate.
There are many motives for studies.
1. I can be independent and can even help my father/husband economicall, God forbid if there is any need.
2. I can meet new people and learn good things from them. In university we meet people from various backgrounds.
3. We have saying that 'One mother equal 100 teachers'. If I am educated, I will be able to raise my kids in a better way.

Cos you can't rely on men!

Jazakallah for your replies. No, this question isn't for Muslims only.
What makes you think you can't rely on men? I can understand the whole thing of wanting to educate the Muslims, as we need this progress in our community, but are all of you intending to get jobs? Will it stay like that after you marry?

Well, just look at how rife divorce is becoming. You can't expect that once you're married you'll always be married. Women should ideally be able to provide for themselves, even if they don't need to.

So, to sum it up, we can say that motivation comes from the whole idea of having to support oneself, if, the need arises in the future?
Sorry I'm not doing an essay here or taking ideas for one, just need some motivation.

i guess if your contributing positively to society and your husband does not have a problem with you working.. rather your being rewarded for helping the Ummah.. then why not carry on studying or with the job??

well, yes but you'd have to avoid the fitnah of working with men and also ensuring that you were able to fully fulfil your responsibilities as a wife and a mother.

What makes you think you can't rely on men?
Because men and women are different. What women bring to the fields of education, research and any others is different to what men bring.
Women have insights into things that men don't have, and men have insights that women don't have.
Which is why both need to contribute to society, in all fields.

Not for me. I mean, I want to be able to get a job of course, but studying is about more than that. it's about not wanting to be passive, to learn to question things and to form your own opinions. It's about meeting like-minded people. It's about finding out who you are and what your place in the world is. Studying is fun!!

That's true (about mixing with men). A sister at college wanted to do a certain job. Another advised her about it, saying that you can't do it because you'll be following the rules of this country and so on, which would kinda the wrong answer, but anyway, forget that, if you look at that job from another perspective, it really should be avoided because she'd be in the centre of loads of people, many of whom would be men, presenting a case. Wallahu A'lam.
To feel like you're contributing to something valuable. Financial incentives help - can't rely on the men for handouts all the time.

Okay. Let's change the question a bit. What motivates you to revise all that work which you go through during the year? Might give a similar answer but might not.

True.. but i dont have a problem with the fitnah of men because there are absoulutely no men where i work or study.. and resposibilities of the husband mother do not apply to me ..so i really dont have a problem with that either :)

I don't because my study field is based on doing research and writing papers, not revising to learn things off by heart.
But back when I did, it was so that I could pass my exams.

My mom is retired college professor. Both my sisters are doctors. I don't think money matters motivated them. Passion and persuasion of enlightenment motivated them in choosing the careers which they did.

:wswrwb: total necessity, having to support my self financially and keep a roof over my head insha Allah . nothing more to it than that, women cant rely on even their families to care for them these days, and i didnt have the luxury of further education it was straight into working 12 hour days age 15.

because i was interested in the thing i was studying and i wanted to learn that. not really because of wanting a job or any kind of a profession, the stress of that does not really appeal to me

I'd like to be able to look out for myself in the future and not have to rely completely on my husband, so it's always good to have something to fall back on incase life doesn't turn out all peachy and perfect. You'll never know what kinda guy you'll end up with in this day and age. It's best to always be prepared for the worst while we're expecting for the best.

Assalamu Alaykum,
Masha'Allah that's excellent.
Another question comes to mind.
So, we've spent all these years doing hevay studying of secular education, which will benefit us and insha'Allah those around us, but how about deeni education? Today it's easy to get all sorts of knowledge on the internet, from books, and so forth, but just how we attend school, college, and university to become a doctor, a psychologist, or anythign else, under the guidance of a teacher, surely that's the same for deeni knowledge aswell right? So does that ever come to the minds of those who are in uni, that one day insha'Allah I'll go to classes of deen just how I did for uni?
Im going to uni because i have to. In a perfect world i would just get married have kids and stay at home while my husband went to work :) But we all know the real world doesnt work like that. Anything could happen, my husband might not be able to supprt us, we might divorce, hey, i might never get married!!!!!! For me education is simply to get a decent job and to be able to support myself if need be.
I dont want to go to uni. I don't really feel motivated to study the thing i'm going to study (law). But one day i might need the money. I would have rather done Arabic or something. Or just stayed at home memorising Quran and learning more about my deen. Sometimes i lack motivation for exams etc. But when it comes to learning about my religion i have a big goal to strive for, which is jannah, which keeps me motivated and i actually enjoy doing it.
For me im looking forward to meeting and making muslim friends at uni. Sadly i dont really have any where i live & at my college. :(

I'd love to go to an islamic school for adults after uni!!! But that's if i dont have to work etc ...and have time  But the internet i find is very good for learning about islam. You can download lectures etc etc. Endless opportunities. Obviously it would be better to have a teacher, then you know what your learning is right and not fabricated. I suppose you just gotta be careful where you get your info from on the net.
im not ambitious or career oriented at all, i just completed university to make my parents proud, they feel a sense of achievement aswell when their child gets a degree so i did it only for them :coolbro:
and also that once i finish they would let me do what i wanted and so far so good alhamdulillah
Allahu alem about the future tho, its a long road ahead :)
I guess for me, i want to be successful, and make it to the top, InshAllah.
Being the only girl among 4 brothers its tough but i can hack it

Well. In simple terms, i feel like im wasting my time, years of my youth, learning things for the dunya. Sometimes after exams and getting my results i feel like i should have revised earlier, or tried harder. And then i say oh ill revise earlier and try harder next time..then next time comes, and it doesnt happen.
I dont want the same to happen for my life. Do you understand what i mean? I don't want to die not having used my time efficiently and really striving for jannah.

So how do you get motivated? Is it the idea that you may have to keep yourself stable financially in the future, if certain things happen? Sorry if I'm repeating questions to you.

Err, i won't say exactly but near middlesbrough. There are alot of muslims but i dont know any. And in my college there are 1 or 2 other muslims but i don't know them well.

If I am not learning something I feel my heart sort of "dies", I always need to be reading/studying something:up: It makes me feel alive!!!
Although I haven't studied this subject since uni, I was telling my husband yesterday how philosophy - for example - gives me the rush some people get from sky diving !!! :hidban:

:sub: nothing new, but for me, education means a lot. I enjoy learning and it makes my mummy happy:inlove:
I don't necessarily want to be a career women or climb up the professional ladder, but at least :insha: I'll be able to look after my family and myself if it becomes necessary to do so. And yes, a degree may not always guarantee employment, but it does help :insha:
For me, its about putting your trust in :allah: and then tieing your camel.

This is so true. I agree with you about tying your camel. My uncle died suddenly a few nights ago (May Allah bless him with the highest of jannah Allahumma amine) and he left a wife and 2 young boys, one 11 and the other 6.
It falls to the wife to start providing for her sons, paying the rent, bills and so on. If I was in that situation, i would want to be comfortable enough to know that I can get up and get a job to take care of my family rather than relying on my mum to start taking care of me all over again and 2 kids on top of that.
