They're actual swimming classes I'm guessing?

Barak'allahu Feeki.

Well all I can really relate is the little I know about the brothers sessions- apparently those that can swim of course can splash about as they want freely (obviously abiding by the safety guidelines) but as for those new learners than brothers will be there to help them insha'allah.

If you are a newbie it has been requested if possible to take a relative/ friend of the same gender with you who will splash about and help you learn too so that the organisors can also enjoy themselves or are able to supervise others during the sessions.

Swimming is from the Sunnah:

Swimming

Ibn Umar (Radiallâhu anhu) narrates that Rasul'Allah (Sallallâhu alaihi wasallam) said: "Teach your sons swimming and archery and teach your daughters sewing."(Baihaqi)

:masha: this is good news for sisters who want to swim, personally I enjoy swimming, but it's not the same in this country, as to swimming in desh with leaches , and with a net in your right hand ready to catch the early tide harvest :)

I always get a bit worried about how much of my fellow sisters I might have to see in a swimming pool- covering from the navel to the knees is still kind of exposed for women!

hence the awrah of a man and woman is different.

Na'am actually Ukthy you raise a very valid point masha'allah- I was under the assumption that naval to knee was referring to the brothers specifically and not the sisters as they need to cover a lot more.

Insha'allah call/ e-mail them whoever is interested.

or the spears.. now they are wonderful for throwing at the passing 1-2 metre fish we used to enjoy. straight from the ocean.. and you were more likely to get a catch than if you tried hand lines or nets.. . not that i ever used a spear that was men's business!!

Us ladies used sticks to prod the ground around mangroves and beaches to find oysters, turtle eggs and other delicacies .. and the file snakes and the ...

whoops wrong country :).. that was in North Australia

Back to the topic though.. Interestingly same rule applied with the Aboriginal people we worked with.. segregated swimming and the women always swam fully clothed and in groups and usually couldn't swim as well as the men

I do know some women though who insist that the awrah before other Muslim women IS the navel to the knee and this shows a real lack of hayaa, in my opinion. I always understood that if, for example, a woman is breastfeeding and can't ensure she was completely covered in front of another woman it wasn;t a huge deal as long as she was making an effort to not uncover. But for women to do this on purpose- ya Allah!
Although sometimes it's a culture thing. I've been told that sometimes you get women from African countries who breastfeed openly in front of women while on Hajj!!!
May Allah protect the modesty of all the Muslims!

legally that is the awra between women according to the hanafi madhhab, it does not mean that we uncover everything else and go around infront of others because that lacks hayaa. the same way that mens awra even infront of women is naval to knees but it is not right for them to walk the streets like this habitually and there is no need for that. sisters are not wrong if they state that the awra is that, but it does not follow on from there that okay we dont need to cover or retain any modesty amongst each other. many scholars advise even to avoid wearing very tight and short clothes even amongst women because it is against modesty, as for breastfeeding i think it can be done without being so exposed or without being exposed at all... but this does not affect that technically the awra between women is naval to knees, however it does not mean that the minimum awra and the ideal behaviour is the same thing. there is a lack of understanding if people try to implement it in that way?

I agree, I think the problem is that because the ruling is there some people take it as what they should be doing ignoring that it is actually just a minimum and part of the character of a Muslim is that they are modest. my mum has a right go at me if I wear a tight top even in the house! :D

Did you cook the fresh fish on the beach?

I’ve tried spear fishing it can be effective if you know what you are

Our beaches in the UK where never that exotic, the only think you’ll find is rocks and dog dung :outta:

That is impressive to swim with cloths on, especially if one is wearing cotton, when it's soaked it gains allot of weight and thus it becomes harder, I'm impress by Aboriginal people, but can they swim in a swamp with their books balanced on their heads :p
