Riba/Interest: It's History & Impact On The World By Mufti Barkatulla

Date: Saturday 5th January 2008
Time: 6pm
Venue: London Muslim Centre, 82-92 Whitechapel Road, London E1 1JE

Today, unfortunately many Muslims allow rational arguments to enter their minds and give preference to their logical reasoning and leave the injunctions of theQur'an and Sunnah aside. One of the issues where Muslims demonstrate this kind of attitude and forget and neglect the Qur'anic and prophetic text is the issue of Rib'ah otherwise known as interest. Although the problems with Riba may be deceptively difficult to understand and appreciate, the prohibition on Riba by Allah in the Quran is absolute. In fact so despised is Riba that the unparalleled curse of a 'Declaration of War' from Allah (sw) and his Messenger (saw) is directed towards those who refuse to give up dealing in Riba, and continue to follow their feeble rational arguments.

In this regards Allah says in Surah Baqarah Verses 275 to 278; "Those who take interest will not stand on the day of judgment except as he who has been driven mad by the touch of the Demon" (V:275)

And in another verse He states; 'Oh you believe give up what remains of Riba if you are believers. But if you do not, then listen to the declaration of war fromAllah and his messenger...(V:278)
