what shops u went to?
i dont know the material names :o but the black thin type material is good, like softish to touch it. some of them in shops when u touch the material it is more thicker and more rougher/scratchier texture, i dont like that stuff so much. about shrinking it shouldnt do that if u follow the washing instructions i think? none of mine ever did that regardless of dif materials

that material is excellent because its light, doesnt make u feel hot even though its black, breathes waaay better than polyester, is very comfortable to be in for loooong hours unfortunately i dont know wat its called but wen i was in Dubai we were at this abaya shop and all the abayas were made from that material. its very common but i dont know the name :(

A few tips..
when looking @ material hold a bit of it form one side and see how heavy/light it feels. It may not make sense now but try it and u will be able to tell when you're holding it. If it feels really light then it's the clingy type material that sticks to you. But some light materials are good, but not too light.
If it feels a bit heavy (not too heavy as in curtain material) then it will have a nice drop and wont cling to you. (sorry about this heavy/light thing it's the best way i can explain it :o)
Also, hold the material in your hands and scrunch it up. If you see that it's all creased then that material's not good as a jilbaab, but if it doesn't crease up then it's all good
i think you are getting the cotton material that's why its shrinking, like the other sisters i too don't know the names of the material so i can't suggest some. I will try find out for you inshaAllah.
Depends on what the jilbab is for. I have quite a few: cotton ones for the summer, thick material which looks like suede/nubuck for the winter, crepe/satin ones sometimes with lace/embroidery for special occassions, plain formal ones (oddly enough I find mens suit materials are really good for workwear) and preferably they should have a pocket.
In the past, I once made this maroon crepe jilbab which was like all purpose cos' maroon is a nice enough colour to wear on special occassions but dark enough to look formal at work and so that was a good 'all purpose' type garment and the best thing was; it was wash and wear so it never needed ironing so that's probably the main reason as to why I wore that one the most. It looked nice enough and the fabric was quite hard wearing so I could relax in it without worrying about it falling apart or tearing so I think that's the ideal kinda jilbab really:inlove::D:up::hidban:

try and avoid linen material as it creases too much and check the thinness too, so that its not seethrough

Why don't you just take her on a torturous shopping trip like you took me to whitechapel, you touched EVERY single piece of clothing :torture:
on topic: yeah the heavy/light thing that Hayaa' is talking about   :outta:

:o you're just too impatient lol. How can you tell what the material is like by just looking at it!? You have to touch it duh :smack:
You were just annoyed that you lost your hula hoops :outta:
You know you like going shopping with me really ;-)

Yeah, I think that that's the one I got from Arabian nites and it's very comfortable but even the slightest wind and it sticks to me. Insh'Allah it only looks that way to me and not other people on the street!
But I do find that wearing a coat over it, you have to pull it down every so often cos that material can bunch up a bit in what you're wearing on top and then it looks shorter from the bottom!
