Well i'm still pretty young, so i have time to think about this, my parents always wanted me to do somthing in the medical feild, (dont know why tho, guess its cuz of the $) my grades are pretty gud, and i feel as though i can get into a nice college
but the problem is, i'v never really been intereested in the feild, i personally want a career in arts, you know calligraphy, painting, wood carving etc. that sort of thing, i want a career that i would actully like. I know i obvously wont be able to make the same amount of money as i would say as a doctor.
But than again, i dont want to make that much money, i just want a plain simple life. Do you think i could make enough money as a artist/painter? And is there much demand in the feild?
no. be a doctor. u have good grades u should go for it. dont u want to help people get better? help the muslim community? even if some of us wanted to be a doctor, we cant cuz we stink at science.. like me for example, so use the gift Allah swt gave u to help people.
and u'll get more marriage prospects too :p

Junaid i made it to med school only because my parents wanted me to and because i have a strong family background in the medical industry. If you want to become a surgeon you have to have a passion for it or it's not going to work. Medical field is the best, you make solid money and you get to help cure people, imagine the sawab you'll get out of it????
It's not just the grades that are going to get you in med school, you have to do community and charity work and do good in your interviews but inshallah you'll be fine.
Go for it

Don't listen to anybody when you're deciding on which field to enter.
Coldly and calculatingly think what you're good at, what you might enjoy in the future and what you enjoy now, and then make a decision.
I'll say my tuppence worth, bear it in mind if you like, but don't base a decision on it.
We have plenty of Muslim doctors. We have plenty of Muslim Engineers. We don't have many Muslim scientists.
We don't have many Muslim journalists, we don't have many Muslim artists, calligraphers, or writers. We don't have many professional Muslim wood workers, or ship builders. (In fact we need a good ship builder, if you're good at wood work, think about it ;))
These are all honourable professions. These are all important fields, and each and every one of them is essential and important in its own way.
Do what you're best at. That way you'll be content, and if you're content, you will be able to pass on your message much more effectively to others.
As for money, with any professional career, you will always be living comfortably. If you're looking for money, the medical profession is one, but it's also a major headache, science is comfortable but not so much. As for the others, well if you're a good artist, calligrapher, writer, or journalist you stand to make more than any surgeon will.
We have plenty of Muslim doctors. We have plenty of Muslim Engineers. We don't have many Muslim scientists.
it never hurts to have more

Of course not, but not at the expense of other fields, equally important. Doctors would be out of a job if people didn't do dangerous things, like a bit of wood work ;)
No, I'm kidding, the fact is we need Muslims diversifying, doing other things that are equally necessary. It seems amongst many communities the two things Muslim kids do is either medicine or engineering. When some of them are frankly too smart to be doing medicine or engineering, they should be at the cutting edge of research.
Or some of them are wasting their creative talents in medicine (trust me there is no shortage of people wanting to do medicine) when they could be inspiring the next generation of medics by writing, or doing development work, or teaching.
Lol @ HugoBoss.
Nope, it's just true. Good artists, calligraphers and journalists command incredible sums of money.

Joha they may demand a hefty amount but you can't say they'll make more money than any surgeons out there. Do you have any idea how much Plastic Surgeons make in Hollywood????? Pretty sure you don't because you wouldn't have said that.
:)
well dont be a plastic surgeon  u can be one of those family doctors - good money, and more flexible than being one of those hospital doctors

Plastic surgeons, of Hollywood fame and type, don't count in my definition of a Muslim surgeon. :D

Nice scapegoat but your definition of whatever you think doesn't matter, surgeons make a lot of money whether they practice in hollywood or elsewhere. For your information there are plenty of muslim surgeons in Hollywood and not only that they are one of the top surgeons in North America.
Journalist now thats a joke
Son: I want to become a journalist mom, not to many muslims out there
Mom: Not to many muslim homosexuals either, why don't you become that

Don't take a career just because someone else wants you too. That's a fast road to burn-out and you can just *hear* the stress creeping up on you!
It's wonderful that you want to persue the arts instead, but keep in mind it's a much more subjective field and hard to get a foot in, sometimes.
So persue the arts, do what you love, but realize you might need a job/career to support you through your artistic endeavors!
Like me.. I would LOVE to quit my job (well, ok not really since I do do what I love but still...) and write stories and poetry, and design and sew clothes, and make art and crafty things and such and so on.. but I can't (yet anyway) make nearly enough selling crafts or clothes here and there to support myself. I wouldn't even be able to support all the fabric or bits and pieces I'd need to make a line of clothing or a line of crafts.
So while I still sew and write and make artsy things, I support myself with my career. It's not a bad trade-off especially since I do what I've wanted to do since I was 12. Maybe some day when I retire I'll be able to put a stronger focus on all the other stuff I want to do too. :)

Guess it doesn't hurt to have a bit more of everything nowadays.
Put it this way - Medicine is a very good career path, IF you want to do it, if you don't... You can either force yourself to (although tbh IMO you must be really hard to impress if Human Biology doesn't amaze you and think Alhamdulilah at the processes Allah SWT has ordained for us...) - the money is yes, solid, and job security is good wherever you are in the world there's pretty much a demand, so life will be pretty simple Inshallah (although the hours are harsh).
My Dad told me time and time again to do Medicine, I wanted to do Engineering - Mechanical Engineering. I applied for Mechanical Engineering to his disappointment, but Alhamdulilah he got over it (lol) - got into UCL - then at the last minute I changed to Mechanical Engineering w/Business Finance - which meant I got to go to LSE as well!! (Which is an EXCELLENT place) - now? I no longer want a career in engineering (the thought kinda crosses my mind...) - I now want to get into Banking/Finance - and have focused my attention on being an Operations Analyst at an Investment Bank, the closest thing I'd consider to Engineering is either Project Management or Consultancy...
In any case, you say you want to do something arty... well, I reckon that could be a hobby rather than a career - I got into Engineering so I could design roller coasters (no really, I'm a thrill seeking freak and I had sooooooooo many ideas for new designs that I wanted to realise via engineering) - but then I realised that it was only a passion, not a career - they're different...
Not to be harsh, but if there's someone you couldn't help out its no use saing "well at-least I'm a good artist right?" - end of the day the only reason I'm getting into Banking and Finance (or the foremost reason) is cos' of the money, there I said it. I'm being honest, don't get me wrong, I'm also pretty much fascinated by Economics etc, but if I can get a mortgage earlier and be in a better position for marriage earlier, then I'll do it. You have to think the same way soon Inshallah - we all have something we're passionate about and want to get into, but unfortunately we'll also one day have a reality check...
...Ever thought of computers? Getting into that? Its a big thing nowadays, and attention to detail is paramount in Compuiter Science or Engineering...
Trust me, unless you're doing something solid like Medicine or Dentistry - you're perspective of your career path will totally change during university - thats almost guaranteed - I know law students who went and became teachers - and Economics graduates who did law conversion courses - and a computer science graduate who is now an accountant... See what I mean?

I agree 100% but like you've said you want to help muslims and trust me this is one of the great ways you can. Depending on where you live you need to build a good muslim cliental.
Doctors are well respected as well

Very good point, a very large majority of the world's Economy (or technically, the entire world's economy due to the deals between Middle-East/Asia and Europe/US) is interest-based and thrives on interest, then again, the latest credit crunch could very well had been avoided under an interet-free economy (although thats open to a lot of debate...)
In any case - Inshallah when I do go into banking and Finance, its not too hard to stay away from this Alhamdulilah - people who work in either Operations (like me Inshallah), Research, Technology, HR or consultancy don't really have to do any trading/sales... So there's no direct dealings with interest per se...
In any case - Allahu Alim.

Well, then next time you or somebody else rants about the media being anti-Muslim, spreading anti-Muslim bigotry, just remember that you're not exactly helping.
Or you get somebody saying, hey how come all the books out there are so anti-Muslim...well remember, you're not doing anything about it so you can hardly expect them to present Islam in a good light.
And no, surgeons earn a lot, but not that much, and on top of that, a surgeon has less time left over...
Do medicine, by all means, it's a noble choice, but remember if you're doing it for the money, it's not worth it, if you're doing it just because you think you're smart enough, chances are it won't challenge you nearly as much as other fields.
ps: any Muslim surgeon working in Hollywood to treat the rich and famous isn't exactly helping humanity.
