Orphans: Our Responsibility
Qur'aan and Sunnah is clear

"And they feed, for the love of Allaah, the poor, the orphan, and the captive..." [Soorah al-Insaan, 8]

Muslims are commanded to behave with courtesy and politeness towards one and all. Kindness to orphans is associated with other segments of society as well, such as parents, relations , needy, neighbours, travellers and others.

Allaah ta'ala says:

"And worship Allaah, and do not join aught with Him: and to parents show kindness and also to kinsmen and orphans and the needy and the near neighbour and the distant neighbour and the companion by your side and the wayfarer and those whom your right hand possesses. Surely Allaah does not love the vainglorious and boastful." (Qur'aan 4: 36)

Muslims are also urged to treat the orphans with kindness and not harshness.

Allaah ta'ala says:

"Therefore, treat not the orphans with harshness." (Qur'aan 93: 9)

Best Home

Abu Hurairah (ra) reported that the Prophet (sallallaahu alaiyhi wassallam) said "The Best home of Muslims is one wherein there is an orphan who is treated well; and the worst home of Muslims is one wherein there is an orphan who is treated badly." (Ibn Majah)

Closeness to the Prophet (sallallaahu alaiyhi wassallam)

Sahl bin Sa'ad (ra) reported that the Prophet (sallallaahu alaiyhi wassallam) said, that the person who supports an orphan, will be so close to him in Paradise as the two fingers and then he demonstrated it by joining his two fingers. (Bukhari)

A Prescription for attaining Paradise

Abdullah bin Abbas (ra) reported that the Prophet (sallallaahu alaiyhi wassallam) said, that whosoever took the responsibility of feeding and clothing an orphan, will divinely be admitted to Paradise, provided, he has not comitted any such offence as cannot be forgiven. (Tirmidhi)

Cure for Hard Heartedness

Abu Hurairah (ra) reported that a man once came to the Messenger of Allaah, sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam, and complained that he feels hardness in his heart. The Messenger of Allaah said, what translated means, "Would you like that your heart becomes soft and that you acquire what you need? Be merciful with the orphan, pat his head and feed him from what you eat. This will soften your heart." (Ahmad)

Allaah ta'ala also says in the Qur'aan:

"They ask you as to how they will spend. Say whatever you spend of wealth, let it be for parents and kindred and orphans and the needy and the wayfarer, and whatever good you do, surely Allaah is the Knower thereof." (Qur'aan 2: 215)

Allaah ta'la further says:

"And they feed for the love of Him, the indigent, the orphan, and the captive." (Qur'aan 76: 8)

Another excellent post, mashaa'Allaah.

I vaguely remember listening to a lecture about the sin of taking the wealth/inheritance of an orphan. If anyone knows what I'm talking about, please post the details, insha'Allaah.

Wa Alaikum wa Assalam,

Barak'allahu Feeki.

Perhaps you are referring to the following hadith dear brother (note the wording and how Rasul'Allah catagorises such matters highlighting in terms of importance in deen):

Abu Hurairah (ra) narrates, the Prophet (saw) said, "Avoid the seven great destructive sins." The people enquire, "O Allaah's Messenger! What are they? "He said, "To join others in worship along with Allaah, to practice sorcery, to kill the life which Allaah has forbidden except for a just cause, (according to Islaamic law), to eat up Riba (usury), to eat up an orphan's wealth, to turn your back to the enemy and fleeing from the battlefield at the time of fighting, and to accuse, chaste women, who never even think of anything touching chastity and are good believers".
Sahih Bukhari
