11 January 2008: Six Years Too Many at Guantánamo
In January 2008, there will still be over 250 detainees held in the American military detention camp in Guantánamo Bay . A legal no-man’s land, the detention camp opened its door on 11 January 2002. Initially touted as a detention camp for “enemy combatants” caught fighting the Americans in Afghanistan, it has since emerged that many of the detainees were nowhere near Afghanistan or combatants and were sold by the Pakistani military for a mere $5000. Over 800 men, of various nationalities, including 9 British nationals, have passed through its gates in the past six years. Only one detainee has ever been convicted of a minor charge, less than a handful face charges and the rest have been held arbitrarily without access to the legal process, at the whim of the US military, for almost six years. Enough is enough. Will 2008 be the year to see Guantánamo close?
The London Guantánamo Campaign, in conjunction with Cageprisoners, invites you to join us in a day of action on Friday 11 January 2008 to call on the British government to take action to help close Guantánamo Bay and bring the remaining British residents back to the UK . Recently, the British government has taken positive steps, bringing back four of the British residents to the UK in 2007 (Bisher El-Rawi, Jamil El-Banna, Omar Deghayes and Abdel Nour Sameur). Like the British nationals before them, none have been charged with any offence under British law. We are calling on the British government to bring Binyam Mohammed and Ahmed Belbacha back to the UK , to take positive action to help close down Guantánamo Bay and other illegal American jails in the “war on terror” for good and to assist in the repatriation of detainees who have nowhere to go on release.
The day of action will involve:
A letter being handed in to Downing Street at 11am by former British detainees led by Moazzam Begg, now a Cageprisoners spokesperson, to call on the British government to take action.
A day-long “statues” action involving groups of people dressed in the orange jumpsuits symbolic of Guantánamo Bay visiting several sites in London on the day where one or two people will pose as human statues while others hand out leaflets about what is happening at Guantánamo Bay.
There are five groups following set routes. Please contact us for more details if you would like to join a group, even if it is only for a few hours. The groups will be working through the following areas: Northwest London (Harrow, Wembley, Regent’s Park, Edgware Road), West London (focusing on Binyam Mohammed – Paddington, Kensington, Knightsbridge, Westbourne Grove), South London (focusing on Shaker Aamer, who must be allowed to return to his native Saudi Arabia – Wandsworth, Battersea, Balham), Central London (several key sites in central London) and East London (The City, Whitechapel) from 8am to 4pm. A briefing for volunteers will be held on Monday 7 January at 7pm in The Gallery, First Floor (to the right), ULU, Malet Street, WC1 (nearest tube: Euston/Euston Square).
Please get in touch if you are interested in getting involved in this action.
A demonstration between 6-8pm (speeches between 6-7.30pm) in Parliament Square (nearest tube: Westminster ) to call on the British government to close down Guantánamo Bay . Speakers include former detainees, politicians and celebrities. Please join us in the evening and call on the British government to take action. This is an authorised event.
Six years on, enough is enough.

PRESS RELEASE
09 January 2008
Former Guantanamo Detainees Deliver Letter to 10 Downing Street
_______________________________________
LETTER EMBARGOED UNTIL 00:00hrs GMT FRIDAY 11th JANUARY
On 11th January 2008 former Guantanamo detainees will gather outside 10 Downing Street at 11:30 am to deliver a letter calling for the closure of the base and the release of British residents Binyam Mohammed Al Habashi and Ahmed Bel Bacha. Attending the event will be Moazzam Begg, Martin Mubanga, Bisher Al Rawi and MEP Jean Lambert.
The letter, addressed to Prime Minister Gordon Brown, has been signed by a number of dignitaries including Baroness Helena Kennedy, Baroness Sarah Ludford, Lord Nazir Ahmed, Sir Geoffrey Bindman and many others, ranging across all parts of British society.
The 6th year of detentions in Guantanamo Bay has brought renewed calls by human rights organisations and former Guantanamo detainees for its closure and fair trials/repatriation of those unlawfully detained.
Moazzam Begg, former Guantanamo Bay detainee and spokesman for Cageprisoners commented,
“Entering its seventh year, the internment of hundreds of men in Guantanamo Bay - without charge or trial – continues to be amongst the most visibly repugnant and persistently embarrassing episodes of the US-led ‘War on Terror’. Last year, even former US Secretary of State, Colin Powell declared, ‘…if it were up to me I would close Guantanamo not tomorrow but this afternoon ...’ The intervention by the present UK administration in securing the return of four British residents last year is most welcome. But a similar assertion to that of Mr. Powell’s by the British government is now highly overdue.”
The 6th Anniversary will be marked with a whole day of actions organised by the London Guantanamo Campaign in conjunction with Cageprisoners. The evening will bring a demonstration between 6-8 pm in Parliament Square where former detainees, politicians and celebrities will be addressing the public. The day however will be filled with ‘statues’ action in different areas of London. The human statues will be dressed in orange jumpsuits and will stand in different locations to symbolise different aspects of the War on Terror.
Further details can be found at: http://www.cageprisoners.com/campaigns.php?id=632
A copy of the letter to Gordon Brown is available at: http://www.cageprisoners.com/page.php?id=28

Add Your Voice: 11 January 2008
Now is your chance get out on the streets and take action to show the United States that we want Guantánamo Bay closed!
On 11 January, it will be six years since the first detainees were transferred, hooded and shackled, into Guantánamo Bay.
In the years that have followed the US has detained over 700 men, none of whom have had access to a full and fair trial. Today nearly 300 men continue to be detained at the base - many have suffered ill-treatment or torture.
Join us outside the US Embassy in London from 9:30am on Friday 11 January to add your voice to our call for Guantánamo to be closed. The more people that can be there the louder our voice will be. If you aren't able to come to London, there will be major events across the UK, including Edinburgh and Belfast. Go to our website to find out more.
To mark the 6th anniversary we want as many people as possible dressed up in Guantánamo-style orange boiler suits, kneeling down outside the US Embassy in London. Anyone can attend - please wear warm clothes but avoid bringing a bag with you. We will muster outside Grosvenor Square at 9:30, and the demonstration will take place inside the square from 10:30.
If you would like to wear an orange boiler suit, or just want to let us know you are attending, please contact us at guantanamoanniversary6@amnesty.org.uk. As well as guaranteeing your outfit, we will also send you some background information on Guantánamo Bay and details of final plans for the day.
Belfast:
To mark the 6th anniversary we want as many people as possible dressed up in Guantánamo-style orange boiler suits, and leading a chain-gang through Belfast City Centre. Anyone can come to the demonstration - no costume required. If you would like to wear an orange boiler suit, please register by emailing fionna.smyth@amnesty.org.uk. As well as guaranteeing your outfit, we will also send you some background information on Guantánamo Bay (in case anyone asks) and details of final plans for the day.
Edinburgh:

Wear orange today to protest Guantanamo outrage
American values betrayed by Bush prison in Cuba
January 11, 2008
We rarely wear orange, but today we will, joining others across Michigan, the USA and the world to mark a sad anniversary - the sixth year since prisoners first arrived at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. These people were swept up in the U.S.'s "War on Terror." Orange is the color of the clothes these prisoners typically wear.
Guantanamo houses these prisoners because the President and his administration want to avoid standards of prisoner treatment required within the boundaries of the U.S. Guantanamo operates illegally and the protest today seeks its closure.
We'll make this protest for many reasons. One of them is that the Founders of our country rejected dungeons and chose due process - and so do we. No president should have the unchecked power to just call someone an enemy and lock him away indefinitely.
We support habeas corpus and fair trials. Torture is immoral, illegal, and un-American. From our nation's Capitol to our state's Capitol, we will raise public awareness and strengthen the call to end torture and indefinite detention without trial.
Six years ago, photos of detainees in orange jumpsuits, blindfolded and shackled in outdoor cells, stunned the world. Today, Guantanamo represents a betrayal of American values. It shames our country internationally. We claim to promote democracy in the Middle East, but deny our detainees fundamental legal rights of due process. Most prisoners are held without ever being charged. Many detainees are held even after intelligence officials determined they are not terrorists. After years of imprisonment, more than half of the detainees were released without ever being charged with a criminal act.
The call to close Guantanamo comes from surprising places. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice favor closing Guantanamo. So does former Secretary of State Colin Powell who declared: "We have shaken the belief the world had in America's justice system by keeping a place like Guantanamo open ..."
Guantanamo does not protect, but endangers, our nation. Not a single prisoner has gone to trial, and only one, an Australian, has pleaded guilty to lesser charges. According to Thomas Jefferson, an essential principle of our government and constitution is the Writ of Habeas Corpus, an 800-year-old legal procedure that protects against unlawful and indefinite imprisonment. For more than 200 years, habeas corpus has been the foundation of our nation's limits on arbitrary governmental power over people. It sets us apart from other countries. If we fail to protect civil rights at Guantanamo, we may see similar attacks on our civil rights within our homeland itself.
Nationwide, the American Civil Liberties Union and other organizations have set today - Jan. 11 - as a day of protest. We declare it is time to end the assault on American standards of justice and civil liberties by closing Guantanamo. We'll wear orange to highlight this protest.
- Carolyn N. Koenig is president of the Lansing/Jackson Area Branch of the Michigan American Civil Liberties Union. Stephen Manchester is chairman of the branches' Public Policy Committee.

... I'm joking, don't tell me off! :outta:
Alhumdulillah, the fact that a demonstration/protest was allowed once again in Parliament Square is an achievement in itself.
There were a lot more speakers than that which was announced, representatives from Save Omar, Reprieve, CAMPACC, Green Party, Stop The War etc. as well as brother Moazzam, Yvonne and Gareth Pierce and I believe there may have been more but I got there just after six due to working a million miles away!
They highlighted the fact that Binyam Mohammed and Ahmed Belbacha really need our help and support more now than ever as Binyam's mental state is getting worse and Save Omar and LGC are beginning more campaigns for him and stated that we should write to our MPs and ask them what they are doing for them.
Also another issue which was highlighted was what was referred to by al as the UK's Guantanamo, Belmarsh and the fact that brothers are being held on absurd charges and their mental state is effected by their treatment.
One thing which really got to me was when Gareth emphasised just how much can happen in 6 years such as for the brothers' parents and family passing away, them having children etc. Subhanallah when you think how much happens to us day to day when we our out and free and living our lives, it makes you realise just how much these brothers are missing out on with their family. :(
