My 10 year old brother came up to me today and asked: 'abla, if you have a secret, should you tell someone?'

So I explained in detail that you should tell however small or unimportant the secret may be. I sat him down and gave him a mini lecture.

He then wonders off dreamily. I then ask him: 'Do you have a secret?' He replies back with a no...then a yes....and then a no.

Should I be worried?

He's somewhat too young to appreciate the positives of unspoken words. Just ask him what it is seeing as he probably wants to tell you.

I have, many times in fact. He's not saying a word.

Try to ascertain if it’s a good secret (in other words something nice) or a bad secret (in other words, something that may be of concern). If it’s a good secret, there is obviously no reason to be worried.

If it’s a bad secret, however, you could explain to him that you will try to help him if he tells you what the secret is.

Perhaps you could tell him that if he is in any danger or if someone is threatening him, or someone has done something to him, then he should tell you or your Mother because it’s important and you can try to help him.

I hope I haven't worried you, it's probably nothing, but there's no harm in finding out for sure.:)

Jazakallah Khair brother :) I've said all this in my 'mini lecture'.

I'm sure it's nothing serious. He probably broke something and is afraid to tell us. He has a habit of doing this :p

I'm just a really curious person and extremely overprotective.....so I HAVE to know, even if it's not important.

Ive tried this on my nephews,
i guess since hes a 10yr old, you might need a guy to do the following:

grab both his arms, one in each hand.. (outside in the garden or something), and start swinging him in a 360* motion, until he says "STOP STOP CHAACHU! ITS *spills the secret*"

Tried and Tested!! always works ;)

there are afew other methods that i've picked up over the last 14years of "uncle-hood"

Haha...force it out of him?

Good idea :outta:

Man, be careful! Swinging a child like that could actually make them stop breathing! Dangerous!

Wa iyyaki.

I understand your concern, it's a worrying world we live in, especially for children.

Try not to worry yourself too much, though. I'm sure it's something relatively unimportant and becoming too "aggressive" (for want of a better word) in your questioning may only stop him from talking even more.

All the best ukhti.:)

hah.. my 10 year old sis always says stuff like that to me. It just means they want to tell you the secret and they're just waiting for you to show an interest before they spill the beans.

lol I would never let my sis walk away with a dreamy look on her face after saying she has a secret

maybe he has one, but he said 'no' because he's afraid you will make him tell you.. so he is trying to be good and not tell anyone

if your worried someone hurt him or he is sad, also explain that secrets are between 'good' people and if someone hurts you, you should always! tell someone
