Assalamu Alaykum,

Why is it advised not to use bitmap images on websites? I had to create an image and when I save it as a gif the quality goes really bad.

Walaikum al-Salam

just don't (I'm sure somebody can give a better reason than this ...) - they make for massive files - use png or a high quality jpeg.

Bitmaps are exactly as the name says, a map containing many bits of an image. it is just a large array of bits of an image, that when put together, looks like a picture. So the file size larger than the usual GIF, JPEG images. GIF and JPEG uses some sort of COMPRESSION techniques to retain the original colors.

because bitmaps are extremely large compared to the other formats. also, donno how different browsers would handle it.

Bitmap images can be x10 times the size in data as a JPEG. That is why they're not readily used on websites. Can't you just save your BMP to a JPG?

he could. i just imagine he doesn't know how to save in JPG HIGH Quality. actually, many people don't know that you could do that....but doing so makes the JPG look exactly like the bmp
