It appears from certain Ahadith that many of our troubles and sufferings are due to our own sins. If we give up these sins and repent for them, there is every hope that these troubles and worries will disappear.

Abdullah bin Umar (RA) has narrated:

"Once we (ten persons) were sitting with the Holy Prophet (SAWS). He turned his attention towards us and said: There are four such vices that I seek refuge with Allah from your being afflicted with them:

(i) A nation is afflicted with plague when it begins to commit lewdness openly, or it may be afflicted in such diseases which never spread during the days of their ancestors.

(ii) When a nation commits the sin of giving short measure and short weight, it will face famine and tyrannies of its rulers.

(iii) If a naton stops paying Zakat (the obligatory alms), the rains of mercy will be withheld from it. They would have no rains, but for the sake of cattle and animals.

(iv) If a nation is addicted to breach of trust and pledge, Exalted Allah shall impose on them an enemy from an alien nation who will rob their money by force.

(Ibn Majah)

Often we ask ourselves why do the muslims of today suffer so....but many of the vices mentioned above are afficting the ummah...

'giving short measure and short weight'
...there are very few (muslims included) who do honest trading nowadays ...the trust between brother to brother is no longer there ...so how can brotherhood and unity exist?

'If a nation stops paying Zakat'
Zakat and charity has become a burden on us and parting with the dunya paper is difficult ....if someone shows us kindness or offers help we question 'why? what is their motive? how will they benefit?' ....at the same time we cannot offer help or service unless there will be some benefit for us in return ...we want benefits NOW even if they may be short-term ....and we disregard the benefits that may potentially await us in the Hereafter...

'If a nation is addicted to breach of trust and pledge, Exalted Allah shall impose on them an enemy from an alien nation who will rob their money by force'
...many of the 'muslim' nations have the world's wealth within their grasps ....but due to our individual imperfections which are manifested to a greater extent in the community ...we fail to do simple acts of worship such as keeping promises ....we need to aim for the level of ihsan whereby you show others decency and abide by your words/promises WITHOUT seeking out benefits in this world...

the trustworthy and caring relationship between one another is missing and it is bringing about the troubles and worries the muslim ummah is facing today...

May Allah forgive me for the mistakes I have made

'Or do you think that you will enter Paradise without such (trials) as came to those who passed away before you?'
(al-Baqarah 2: 214)

'Praise be to Allah,
Lord of the Universe,
the Compassionate, the Merciful,
Master of the Day of Judgement.
You alone do we worship,
and to You alone we turn for help.
Guide us to the straight path.
The path of those whom You have favoured,
Not those who have incurred Your wrath,
Nor of those who are gone astray.'
(al-Fatihah 1: 7)
