as salamu alaikum,

jazakallahu khairan for the how-to.

u know, the way I learned how to build a pc was simply opening up my own pc and then having a peak. back in those days, things were a lot tougher because I had zero clue about PCs, and my computer wasn't even a "PC". it was a PowerPC as in Macintosh 6200CD (later upgraded to 6300CD).

why not sis? it's extremely easy these days. believe me, all u have to do is take one plug, and plug it into the other. if something is not made to go into a certain plug, it will not fit. so it's very very simple.

Cool, I missed all those early PowerPC Macs.

I stopped using Macs around System 7 when I got my NeXT. Then after that I went onto linux. And then returned to the Mac when they incorporated NeXTstep into OS X.

So I pretty much missed System 7,8 and 9. So what did you run on the 6200/6300?

Lol, smart move their, I think. but traitor nonetheless :p

I've still got one, a Performa 5200, identical to the 6200 pretty much, different form factor though, runs beautifully with System 8 - especially for kids to play around on.

System 7 was cool too, never used sys 9, jumped to Windows..., came back when Jaguar was out.

How did those NeXT's stack up to the equivalent offerings from Redmond?

Traitor to Apple, you mean? I worked for NeXT for a while. We were like an exiled Apple team. :)

Windows? Yuck.

How did those NeXT's stack up to the equivalent offerings from Redmond?Well, OS X is basically the same OS we had back then. In fact if you've done any Cocoa development, it's the same stuff. Even the names all still start with "NS".

And Obj C didn't change much from that time until Leopard, really. Even IB (interface builder) didn't change a lot until Leopard.

So NS was a totally modern operating system, almost 15 years ahead of it's time. But, unfortunately it was also about 15 years ahead of the hardware. So it was a bit slow sometimes on a 33Mhz 68040 like I had.

But now running it on these modern machines is great. I still call my desktop the same name as my old NeXTstation. Because as far as I'm concerned it's just a really fast color NeXTstation with a big screen.

This would have been a dream back in 1990! :)

I ran system 7.x, i forgot exactly which one originally came installed. It was not bad, and compared to windows 3.1/3.11 it was a world of a difference as I recall it. Later on, i got into ZeLiFCaM (if u know/remember what that was) and got a copy of macOS 8. it was basically system 7 with the aaron theme. so not really much of a difference but it looked as good as xp royal blue theme (found in xp MCE) compared to original XP theme.

ahhh..those were the days...when PCI slots on a MAC was a luxury, we had to stick to nubus/ISA slots, voodoo had competition from powerVR, power pete was somewhat fun, running wolfenstein years after it came out on DOS, MacPlay was becoming the de facto in mac games publishing, apple finally decided to let clones come out, etc etc etc :)

mind u, when windows 95 came out, it blew away anything apple could come out at the time. I think if it wasn't for that magazine, MacAddict, i would've dropped the mac much earlier than i had done. but u know, eventually i would've dropped it anyway simply because of PC Gaming, where windows is king.

lol! MacAddict, I remember, but nooo, windows 95 didn't beat System 7.5 and it's variants....maybe for games.

Not really that much of a geek, but the NS prefix appears all over the place! I knew OSX was based on NS but didn't make the connection that that's where the 'NS' came from :o

Al those NSUI..... property attributes.

Just looking at some screenshots of NeXTStep - it does look damn advanced. Wish I could run it on an emulator - apparently OpenStep can be run....but it's really difficult to install, and hard to find!

so what do u guys do to get rid of an old HD cos u now have a new one?

smash it up with a hammer?

just throw it in the bin?

burn it (i dont think that is possible right?)

which way is best?

i think you should break it into lil peices and eat it in little bits

because do you remember in prison break where Michael broke his hdd and threw it out the window into a river and they found it n managed to retreive most of the data on it :embar:

keep it, keep it - does it have a hardware failure (ie. does it not run at all)?

If it still runs, find out who the manufacturers are, and post back and maybe we can give you the link of a utility that might be able to format it (a special kind of format - a low level format) and restore it to some sort of a usable state...

As long as you promise not to keep anything you wouldn't mind losing, keep it connected and store some garbage on it.

Also, if you're not backing up your work anywhere safe, you may as well do it on there. A rubbish backup is better than none.

If you're going to throw it away, don't, yet. Wait for somebody (or me if I can find it) to post up a link to a program that will securely 'zero' it.

u have a couple of choices for destroying it, and everything works aslong as it's totally damaged. I woudl do this, unscrew it, damage it as much as u can. u can also light it on fire (do it in the back yard or something, not in ur living room with carpet). hammering could be ok, but remove the metal casing first.

but before u do any of this, it may be wise to wipe the hard disk clean with something like darik's boot and nuke: http://dban.sourceforge.net/

personally, i didn't have to do any of this.

hmmmm hammering it to smithereens seems to be the easiest option

joha this is the same on that gave me the BSOD, so i doubt i can use it for other stuff, plus i have had a new one fitted now.

I know, hmm, personally, I wouldn't throw it away, but the best thing for you is then - zero it - using the link Belal1 gave, and then just keep it somewhere with your old bits and bobs.

Chances are, after you've done a proper format of it, it'll become usable again - for a while.

sis, u can if u really want to ;) see, all u gotta do is pop in the old hard drive into ur pc, by opening up the case, and connecting it to the IDE cable. i'm sure u have one spare IDE slot. or if ur PC is using SATA instead of IDE, then see if there's an extra slot for that.

but basically, there's usually a slot to pop it into. u don't need to screw thigns up, just connect a IDE or SATA cable to the old hard drive, connect a power cable to the HD, and then boot up the PC. u can leave the case open and the HD hanging on the floor, just make sure it's not moving around or touching the FANS. then destroy the HD and remove it.

but if it's not worth all this trouble, just destroy it fully. the point is to make sure that someone other than gov't officials don't get a hold of this drive intact. normal people , no matter how geeky, cant recover the contents if the inside is totally screwed due to physical damage. only gov't agencies (who employ data recovery firms) can restore data even if it's halfway burnt.

What has a girl anything to do with computer hardware?????

Anyways, everyone should be using SATA drives not IDE.
If you have a legacy nobo, u just need to buy a small adapter and a sata drive.
BTW, i didnt see the video so it may well be a sata. HWo reads instruction manual anyways!!

yah, u can smash it to smithereens and that be fine. just dont' listen to MSS about what to do after you smash them to little bits....

u know, getting rid of cd/dvd's are so much easier...all u gotta do is break em, cut em with scissor, or pop em in a microwave and let it crack....

ooooh, now that is fun,

I urge everybody to do it, you'll see one of the finest sites nature can provide - switch it off before the cd cracks, and you get to see fractals on the back.

Somebody even colours them in for you for free!

Try it, the other cool thing is with grapes: cut them in half (without splitting the two halves up) and lay 'em on some tissue.

Shove them in and you'll see pretty colours and lights! (The grape halves act like an antenna) - it then promptly explodes, but it's a clean explosion - does no harm :)

na sis, ATA is slower. here's a wiki on it incase ur wondering (and pic): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AT_Attachment

now here's SATA (serial ATA): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serial_ATA

SATA is much much faster.

the only thing faster than SATA is.. SCSI (pronounced SCUZZY)
