Baby names...

My wife would like our son to have a western name, while I am leaning towards giving our son one of these three names:
1.Muhammad
2.Ali
3.Saladin
What should I do give my son a western name or one of the names I picked out for him?
Any help would be deeply appreciated

Muslim name. Allah's favourite names are Abdullah and Abdur Rahman, and in the hadeeth we are advised to name children after prophets and pious people so we can have the intention of them growing up like them insha'Allah.

You could try something like Adam or Arun or Isaac or Solomon or Abraham perhaps?

Don't call the kid "Saladin" inshaAllah... the correct Arabic pronunciation is Salahuddin - inshaAllah ask a native Arabic speaker to say it for you. Saladin is the Aglicised version and sounds :S compared to the proper version.
If your wife is worried about things like the kid being picked on in school, there are many Islamic names that sound nice to English people - I'm a revert to Islam and the rest of my family are not religious, we chose the name Ruqayya for our daughter mashaAllah (its the name of one of Muhammad's :saw: daughters) and although my family say it Rukayya, it still sounds nice mashaAllah said like that, and they all think its a lovely name mashaAllah. Unusual sounding names are very common in the west these days, so I don't think an Islamic name will make your children get picked on as much as some people fear?
Muhammad sounds nice in English mashaAllah, and everyone knows how to pronounce it mashaAllah. Also tell your wife about all the blessings you get for choosing this name mashaAllah.

I honestly don't understand what the big deal is whether a kid's name is Arabic or not, as long as it is a name with a good meaning. I mean, if you name your kid Ismael or Zakariyah after a prophet, that's all well and good. But, these other names that have nothing to do with a prophet, what's the point? Might as well name the kid something you want, instead of pushing and struggling to find an acceptable Arabic name for the sake of it just being an Arabic name.
