I'm a Muslim born in America. However, I'm wondering if I should be patriotic of America. I see people like CAIR telling me to be patriotic and everything, but I'm sickened to see how the government treats Muslims and how many of the citizens think of Islam. Also, we're not supposed to follow the nonMuslim.

So, my question is whether or not I should be patriotic of the country that has thousands killed in the Middle East, and imprisons-tortures-and kills innocent Muslims. Not to mention constantly making Islam seem like the enemy of America.

As a Muslim in America, should I be patriotic of America?

Nationalism is haram. Supporting your nation in wrongdoing is haram, and I think would even take you out of Islam. (I'm not a scholar so inshaAllah someone can clarify this)

However you can be a good neighbour, do dawa by example among the non Musilms you know (by them seeing how you live your life according to Islam, treat people with respect and so on) - but that does not mean in any way that you have to pretend to like the government of your country when they are clearly committing so much evil! In fact as Muslims we have a duty to stand against wrongdoing. Especially oppression. In the Qur'an it says we must fight oppression until there is no more oppression. If we can't stop it physically, then we must try to stop it with words, if we can't stop it with words, then we must make dua inshaAllah.

In Islam, there is no such as man-made borders. So no, muslims should not be "proud to American" or "proud to be Pakistani".

.

If that is the case, supporting a Palestinian nation, and a Muslim nation is haram as well. .

If a Palestinian believes that Palestine is better than any other nation just because they are Palestinian, yes that is haram. If it means supporting one Muslim nation transgressing against another Muslim nation (or even transgressing another non Muslim nation for that matter), yes that is haram. Islam trancends national racial and cultural boundaries. Muslims support Muslims by virtue of the fact they are Muslims. They also should support the oppressed against their oppressors even when the oppressed are not Muslim.

If by supporting Palestine you mean supporting them in their struggle against oppression, that is halal.

First you have to understand the Islamic definition of nationalism - which means to support your nation/tribe/race/whatever in wrongdoing or to believe that your nation/tribe/whatever is better than anyone elses on the basis of genetics or culture. Muhammad :saw: stated that no race/tribe/nation is better than any other, except in piety. So all forms of racism and nationalism are haram.

Nationalism is not the same as supporting the oppressed against the oppressors, or as approving of an Islamic country being Islamic. But even if teh country is Islamic, Muslims should *not* support them in wrongdoing.

Part of being a patriot is to stand for justice and work within the framework of our government to change its policies and make it a better place to live.

By being a Muslim you should naturally be a patriot to your country.

When they step out of line its your duty as a muslim to speak out against it. Our Constitution provides an outlet for that on many levels from street level to lobbying congress etc.

You must be a patriot to both Islam and your country. I see that as establishing justice in the USA as Islam defines justice.

The real non-patriots are the people who would try to silence you and promote policies that oppress other countries and our fellow Muslims.
