View Full Version : What TV Shows Are Banned In Your Home?
Asalaam alaikum,
i got abit curious from a thread brother abumubarak started, i wanted to know what kinda TV shows/programmes are banned in your home or YOU have banned? Please list them and your reasons why!
I have banned so many, im starting to wonder why i am keeping the TV , ill name a few:
The Simpsons - teaches kids nothing but to be rude and rebellious amongst other things
Charmed - soft porn
Majority of CBBC programmes as they show nothing but little 12 yr olds going on about their dates and which boy/girl they like and how they will get them  most of their programmes show the typical stereotype of how parents are soooo uncool and friends are your everything.
Looney Tunes - a few things that were said in there, that i totally disagreed with and did not wish for it to be an influence.
Thats all for now....lets hear yours...
My parents would never let me watch "The Simpsons" and "Kenan and Kel"
My parents would never let me watch "The Simpsons" and "Kenan and Kel"
99% of Uk/US teeny boppy shows are banned in my house, they are just oversexed to the hilt, the girls are portrayed as tarts and dressed like ones as well and the boys are portrayed as soppy teenagers with jus after one thing.....then they wonder why unwanted pregnancies exist...
why keenan and kel? although i only watched a handful of episodes of it

Alhamdulillah, we don't have a TV in my house. My brother and I convinced our family over a year ago, and now we all reap the benefits.

In our home too we dont have a TV at all from my childhood days! Anyhow by the grace of Almighty it didnt made me in lack of my Knowledge in any ways! Anyway parents should be liable for the future of their kids and have to answer for the questions by Almighty in the day of Judgment!

The above is a great idea.
Another alternative is to have a TV, but it is Daddy's TV and is used for watching only things that Daddy wants to watch, such as lots of news, the occasional sports event, and a great many documentaries about nature and history.
Another alternative is to have a TV, but keep it in the parents' bedroom where it's watched only after all the kids have gone to sleep.

No MTV. No show that involves a boy and girl "close" to each other. No scantily clad dancing ladies.
But my mom didn't have a ban list, we just knew what would be ok with our mom.
Nothing is banned here in my home. Our family Use to watch Geo News but unfortunately it was banned by the Govt of pak....

We have that! And, even Daddy's TV is kept in a store room, to watch anything, you must sit on a cold hard stone staircase, so until there's a real emergency (World War III - or if England ever win any cup), nobody watches it...
i dont know what possess some parents to put TVs in their childrens bedrooms

Telitubbies(its complete drivel)

Yu Gi O(shirk)

anything else we feel is inappropriate
the TV and X box and computer etc.. are all Daddies and its up to Him to decide when they can be used and by whom.
TV in childrens rooms that are for playing games consels are ok, we plan to get one, as i'd really like the living room back on a sat afternoon when they are having their x box marathon sessions!

we have a TV but we don't subscribe to any TV channels so its sitting doing nothing in the spare room. If there is anything educational that our daughter could watch, we can always get it on DVD inshaAllah. We are planning on buying her a synthetic phonics DVD for when she's old enough to learn to read inshaAllah.
Gosh what meanie parents we are
but - especially with little kids - the research is showing more and more that too much TV causes them problems, even stuff like baby einstein thats supposed to stimulate kids brains and make them receptive for learning actually *slows down* their languge development. Its much better inshaAllah to play with your kids, talk to them and read to/with them inshaAllah. Its also good to give them versatile toys like building blocks and cardboard boxes so they learn to amuse themselves and use their imaginations inshaAllah. There's a couple of threads in Parenting, DIY toys and parents recommentation for good toys - i.e. ones that keep kids properly amused because they engage their imagination inshaAllah.
Actually this thread ought to be in parenting IMO *plans kidnap of thread lol*

MTV, V1 and the like should be number 1 on the ban list. u don't even have to be a Muslim to see how and why MTV promotes mental deterioration. MTV addicts are mostly girls with eating disorders and guys who are metrosexual ****ers. watch MTV and u'll understand why girls in the west starve themselves to death just so that they can look good in a bikini. Na'uzubillah.

wats V1? a music channel? or did u mean VH1?
MTV and the rest of the music channels are all about skinny bodies, looking good, big b****** , big booties and sex.
A non-muslim lady at work was talking about her daughter constantly watching MTV and i said she sholdnt really let her cos of the stuff on there....she was so casual about it, i didnt bother with the dos and donts.
It seems in this society, the more u try and protect your child from things, the more of a "strict and bad parent" ur deemed

When I was younger not many cartoons were banned... In fact cartoons and kids shows were much, MUCH better back then... They actually taught kids a few lessons (anyone remember Captain Planet? This episode in particular? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZQJrovKgrTw if only there was one like this about Iraq nowadays...)
Its a shame yknow - nowadays many kids shows are trying to tell kids to be as old as they can... We need the old cartoons back!
Only the sicky cartoons like ren and stimpy were banned... Watching Friends and other shows like that usually got attention from my parents when the characters hugged or something... then they'd say change then change it back now...
I'm not a parent yet... But I'd never ban something just because I didn't think it was funny or useful to me, my kid's mind would work a lot differently than mine - I'd probably still enjoy watching sesame street, but if I suddenly started hating it and my kid wanted to watch it - I'd let them, not gonna stop them doing something they want/like just because my personal opinion is different.

It's better to have nothing banned at a certain age, you just feel more rewarded knowing that you haven't given in to temptation.

i dont think the grown ups are banning certain programmes jus becos they dont like them, they want to minimise, immorality getting instilled in their children, jus by them watching it, and this can happen, quite quickley or over a period of time.

theres that and then the opposite side of the above and i would like to think that im minimising the risk of tempatation being there in the first place at such a young age.

i dont have a cable in my house so we dont really watch tv. i only watch football on sundays and the news on the local channel sometimes.
Dont have any kids at home so nothing's banned.
Only thing banned for the men is watching political programmes all day every day!!
I know kids are more impressionable than adults, but most things that are deemed unsuitable for kids are also unsuitable for adults.
We haven't had a TV for about year, and I dont miss it. If I want to watch Islam Channel, which is the channel I watched the most, I just watch it on the net.

No TV shows are banned at the moment, mainly because my daughter only watches nature documentaries.
However, I'm sure that will change in the next few years, especially when she becomes a teenager. *shiver* When that happens, insha'Allah I will not hesitate to ban anything and everything I feel is unsuitable.
Ideally, I would prefer to live without the horrible brain-eating, soul-destroying idiot-box completely.....but I do enjoy the occasional film or documentary.
With a little common sense and a bit of discipline, TV can be a beneficial educational tool insha'Allah.

When I was younger, and Christian, my family were very very strict Christians so we couldnt watch anything.
Hurcules - Had many different gods and little devil creatures
Power Rangers - They fought too much
Gargoyles- Demonic
Scooby Doo - Ghosts
Cat and Dog - Making fun of childeren with dissabilites i.e conjoined twins
Hunchback of Notre Dame - Demonic Characters
Basically anything that involved ghosts, goblins, etc. We didnt even celebrate Halloween. We put a sign on our door that would say : We celebrate Jesus, not Halloween! The only time I dressed up was as the angel Gabriel in the Birth of Christ play at church. I had some lines in Spanish and stood atop something high.
My brothers however are different, they get to watch things I couldnt watch when I was younger. They can watch anything they want. I wasnt even allowed to play video games, and they can. I always watched PBS and nothing else.

I was never into those shows really. I watched Arthur, The Big Comfy Couch, Lamb Chops, etc. And even documentaries, strange as is. Xena was too buff for me. (Buff as in manly casue I know in the UK it means like hot.)

plenty of time to watch nature documentaries when she's older.
For now, why not get a small aquarium in the house, and let her loose in the garden and play with snails, slugs, earth worms, the birds, in short...real nature.
(That's assuming she's old enough to not try and eat the little critters).
Maybe keep a few mice at home - (in a cage - not wild ;))

I didn't watch any TV when I was really young (up until about 8) then I was an addict for a few years (especially saturday mornings, 4-6hrs of cartoons).
Now I don't watch any TV at all.

IMO Teaches kids nothing but how its "cool" to disrespect your parents and be rebellious towards them and your peers. Each to their own but thats the reason i dont like it.

Hmm do you have younger siblings or childeren? If not, then I wouldnt really expect you to understand. But I dont think you should find it humorous that people have a different opinions and try to bring their childeren up with the best of ways. I would never let my childeren watch those shows, there are better alternatives besides useless shows. Adam's World is an excellent show for young muslim childeren. You can get it at http://soundvision.com

kids are impressionable...very impressionable.
Even teenagers are (maybe more), just see the effects of this gun culture in certain communities - and the havoc it's causing in the UK - popularised in films and computer games.
(If you're an American I wouldn't expect you to understand about guns though )

children learn from what is around them, they are not adults that they can differentiate what words, behaviour is wrong and whats not like us adults.

some kids can be impressionable
its maybe because in my family my siblings and my sisters kids have never really had a big effect from these shows.

Kids from here (US) are a catagory on their own. I dont even know where to start about them. They are much different from the childeren in the UK. The ones in the UK are more well mannered etc.
Honestly, if anyone were to step into my school for one day, you wouldnt believe the kids in there.

The problem with that argument is always this - and I'll use a slightly distasteful argument.
Why is alcohol haram?
List 10 reasons off the top of your head - but mainly to do with intoxication and not knowing who you are. (Leave the one about Divine edict).
Proceed to then show how good you are at controlling yourself and how you'll never drink enough to intoxicate yourself. In fact, let's assume you are good enough not to intoxicate yourself.
Does that make it okay? Is that a good enough justification? And how do you know the future anyway - you may slowly transform into a drunkard.

And how do you know the future anyway - you may slowly transform into a drunkard.

sorry! I wasn't changing the subject, just giving an extreme example to show what I believed to be a fault in the argument.
You took it the wrong way - what I meant was this argument about 'my kids not being affected' isn't really a good one...I'm sure there are plenty of other good ones.

Well it depends on what race a majority of the kids are.
For example, I have been to many many different schools since we move so much. I went to a school where a majority of the kids were wealthy caucasians. They constantly talk about parties, whose 'done' who and where and how the pictures leaked onto myspace. Drinking etc. Also on 4/20 (April 20th) of each year, is a day to get either really drunk or really high. It is also known as national weed day. And what they wear? Oh jeeze thats another story wallah. Like these kids are just atrocious.
I know go to a school where a majority of the people are minorities, mostly hispanic. We have very heavy secuity in the school. There are constant fights, drugs being found and weapons. Most kids are in gangs such as Crips or Bloods flashing their bandanas and gang signs. The kids have NO respect for teachers whatsoever. The girls dress like sluts, I am not exaggerating and they talk about anything and everything, I dunno how to give you guys the exact picture of how they are. Everything I typed now is like the sprinkles on the icecream, its nothing.
And recently there is this thing going on where these groups of boys have been trying to 'go' with a girl from each school in the area, post pictures in action, and post it on myspace with the girls names and the school they go to. Everyone was talking about the girl from our school whose picture was posted, and I found out she was an afghani muslim girl.
Like I said what I just described is nothing.
Also how they disrespect their parents and teachers? Oh jeeze I could type a book on them

kids are impressionable...very impressionable.
Even teenagers are (maybe more), just see the effects of this gun culture in certain communities - and the havoc it's causing in the UK - popularised in films and computer games.
(If you're an American I wouldn't expect you to understand about guns though )
Dead right.
Much better to take the kids out hunting so they learn a proper attitude towards firearms. :D

Addressing a few points made earlier:
Bart simpson - "would you want your child talkng to you like that?" Like what? Saying silly things like 'calabunga dude' or 'ay curamba!'? Or more serious things like talking back etc.
Forgive me if I'm wrong, but having watched tonnes of simpsons episodes, pretty much all of them where Bart simpson has done something wrong usually ends in some sort of a moral to the story, particularly for younger kids, for example; there was one where bart wad being really naughty, and homer was being too lenient on him, until his mother marge stepped in and demanded he change, bart still didnt change.
As punishment, Homer prevented him from watching a movie he really wanted to watch, the Itchy and Scratchy movie. At the end of the episode, it flashes to a hypothetical "forty years later", and Bart Simpson becomes chief justice of the supreme court (of course not the most desirable position to have as a Muslim, legislating man-made law), but the point the episode was making to kids, is that one may have to make sacrifice for a greater cause later in life and to achieve something - and in the end, Bart ended up watching the movie with Homer, because the movie was still in cinemas due to the extreme popularity it received! (Thats supposed to be a funny part of the film).
Like I said before in another post, I'm not a parent... Yet. I can iamgine myself also being very paranoid at the slightest thing my kid would do, say, watch or listen to, and worry consistently over the change or effects it may have on him or her.
Then I remember how I grew up, hiding stuff from mum and dad and literally leading a double life - and I thank Allah SWT for showing me what me mum and dad were always trying to show me. I remember the ways I was rude to my mum and dad and the manner they used to discipline me... And just say to myself, its inevitable that there''s gonna be these sort of challenges raising kids. (of course, this doesn't mean I could just le em' loose to watch and do what they want and let them learn on their own, it does mean I won't plan on putting unnecessary restrictions on everything they do - if anything, I fear they'd rebel against this and become even worse...
I used to know girls from saudi arabia who took off their veil and jilbaab as soon as they stepped onto London from the plane - then its shopping all day, clubbing all night - they never understood why they had to do what they were forced to in Saudi, and so rebelled against it - extremely, may Allah forgive them.

thsi thread is not to put down those who DONT ban certain programmes and at the same time it is not ok to say that those who do ban CERTAIN programmes, that they are paranoid parents (a few people have insinuated this in their posts.
I started this thread becos i wished to know what programmes others have banned in their homes and why (hence the title).
Whether some people wish to admit or not, TV does influence children and us but it is worse for children as they do not know right from wrong and just absorb everything they see.
Those who say they turned out fine even though they were allowed to watch what they want, i disagree, becos if i compared u to a person who wasnt allowed to watch every programme going, i am confident u would be 2 VERY different people (i think someone else stated this as well when they compared themslves to others who had had no limitations when growing up.).
You just have to look in schools and the street to see what kind of influence rap songs, pop songs and TV has had on children.

Alhamdulillah, we don't have a TV in my house. My brother and I convinced our family over a year ago, and now we all reap the benefits.
oh brother i wish i could convince my mum that as well. as far as im concerned the kinda things on tv now its not worth the tv license payed! :D
but honestly i have been trying to convince my mum but she sais that it is not fair on the others as they watch dramas and that in the evenings like the desi ones.
but it is just such a waste of one whole hour which you could spend with your family.
mashallah bro i really envy your living room (because it doesn't have tv :o) wish my mum will respond to my plea's soon :(
enshallah maybe one day
btw i bet your house must be soooo much more peaceful...:)
