Modern Arabic Course for Adults

Where will the course take place?
The course will run in West London at the Greenford Community Centre (170 Oldfield Lane South, Greenford, Middlesex UB6 9JS).
On which day of the week and at what time?
The course will run for twelve sessions on Monday evenings (7 p.m.–9 p.m.) commencing on January 7th and ending on March 31st, 2008.
Who is the tutor?
The course will be delivered by Dr. Imran Hamza Alawiye, the author of the popular ‘Gateway to Arabic’ series.
What are the aims of the course?
This course aims to provide students with the foundation they need to begin to develop the four core language skills of reading, writing, understanding and speaking Arabic, and to provide them with the basis for further study of the language at a more advanced level.
This course will teach students how to converse in basic everyday situations in Arabic and also to introduce them to the written form of the language, enabling them to read Arabic texts with correct pronunciation. The course will also introduce the students to the grammar structure governing non-verbal Arabic sentences.
What can you expect to achieve?
By the end of the course, you should be able:
• To read, write and recognise the Arabic alphabet in all its joined forms
• To read vocalised Arabic texts
• To write dictated Arabic words
• To engage in simple conversational exchanges – introducing oneself, greetings etc.
• To have gained a basic understanding of non-verbal and verbal sentence structures.
What teaching materials will be used?
The ‘Gateway to Arabic’ series of course books are used as the basis for this course, supported by handouts and audio materials. Teaching will take many forms including reading and writing practice, dictation, conversation, classroom activities and homework assignments.
What are the entry requirements?
No prior knowledge of Arabic is needed since the course is designed for absolute beginners. However, an aptitude for learning languages and the necessary level of time and commitment to complete the homework assignments would enable you to derive the greatest benefit from the course.
What are the fees?
The fee for the twelve sessions (twenty-hour course) is £120. Fees may be settled in advance or on the first day of the course.
What do I need to bring with me?
A pen, an exercise book or file paper, and ‘Gateway to Arabic’ Books One and Two (available for purchase from the tutor).

What are the course aims?
The course will focus on the speaking of modern standard Arabic in a number of useful contexts. The structure of the language will also be explained to enable you to adapt and extend what you have learnt to a variety of situations.
What is the course content?
The course will cover various areas of essential grammar such as the gender of nouns and the agreement of adjectives, use of the definite article, attached pronouns, conjunctions and prepositions, demonstrative pronouns, the different types of noun plurals, as well as the rules governing the cardinal numbers from one to ten. Students will be taught a broad vocabulary including items in the home, clothing, food, occupations and nationalities.
What can you expect to achieve?
By the end of the course, you should be able to:
• engage in simple dialogues, and ask and answer basic questions;
• use various adjectives correctly in agreement with nouns, including learning the basic colours;
• achieve greater fluency in reading Arabic texts;
• establish an understanding of how the Arabic singular, dual and plural forms work;
• know how to use personal, attached and demonstrative pronouns;
• understand how to use the numbers from one to ten;
• know the days of the week;
• understand other points of grammar such as the use of the definite article, prepositions and conjunctions;
• have acquired a basic working vocabulary
