Aslam o Alaikum all

In the past i heard few girls named Nimrah/Nimra, and I quite liked it.i suggested it for a girl born in the family. However, it was doubted wether we can keep that as a name or not(as i think it means a baby cheetah).so they resorted to asking a local imam, who said due to its meaning it is not an appropriate name.

You must be aware of Masjid-e-Nimrah in Arafat and is mentioned lots of times during the period of Hajj. So, i was wondering if it is beautiful enough for a Masjid to be named after it why not as a female name.

Your valued opinions/daleel's are sorted.

Jazakallah

well one of my first cousins has that name. after reading this thread, i did non-intensive search for the name, and did not find it...

so i thought, i don't know what the reply is so no point replying.

i am just typing this reply to say that maybe people have not replied because they do not know the answer. the best thing to do is go and speak to an scholar.

according to this site: http://www.babynames.com/name/NIMRA

it means "number" and it is an arabic word.

so it has different meanings depending on the language

i never heard the word "nimra" for number we say raqm? wouldnt necessarily trust sites like babynames.com, when u buy english baby name books they get the arabic names totally wrong... i have seen really crazy things in them, so dnt take em as any authority.
i think the correct meaning is more likely to be that of cheetah, because it is more similar to that arabic word. but whether it is a good name or not i dont know, if u want to ask an alim u can pm the user mullah_din (or might be mullah_deen sorry i forgot the spelling).
because others maybe we dont want to say its halal or its haram that may be why people havent replied.
but if u are doubtful in the meaning if its good, u could try to find a name with a better meaning which sounds similar.
like how about Naima? above someone mentioned the meaning soft, and this is a meaning for Naima, soft, gentle, pleasant etc..

Ask an arabic native scholar orone with extensive knowledge of arabic, personally it sounds a bit too much like Nimrod for my liking.

Words in Arabic can have more than ONE meaning. Nimra also spelt as Nimrah can mean soft, lion, tigeress. Some Ulama suggest it also means number. However, your local Aalim may have said its not an appropriate name because in Hindi it means goddess, although, perhaps the Hindi meaning is irrelevant!

Jordanian dictionaries give its meaning as pure - probably because there is a city in Jordan called Nimrah!
