I've tried using several websites and they give me feedback in relation to where the hotspots are and if they're free or not. Can anyone recommend a good website? And I have a question, generally speaking, are hotspots in public areas free and if they're not free, what would happen if you tried to connect e.g. would you get a screen asking for payment?

try this: http://www.myhotspots.co.uk/

if a wifi access point (read: hotspot) is not free to the public, then you'll get a password/userID authentication dialog. usually your web browser pops up asking u to sign in with the USER ID and Password required to access the hotspot connection.

and they can't charge u if they can't identify you.

When we were in London this summer we found that most public wifi was not free. We ended up buying two one month subscriptions to Boingo, which were able to use with the Cloud and other places around London.

(You're in London, right?)

We did eat in two restaurants and coffee shops that had free wifi where you just needed to accept a set of terms and conditions before you could access other pages.

And then of course there is the Apple store on Regent which is where we stopped once a day or so to have open access to smtp and imap. That is completely free and works great even out on the street in front of the store. I was able to get a weak signal from there even up near Oxford on my iPhone.
