Salaam Alaikum,
Sister it would be alot more convenient if you take it to a professional and have them do it for you. It would save you time and money in the long run. I learned this lesson the hard way I tried to do it myself and ended up having to get another computer. I really screwed mine up :o
Best of Luck, Nahita

Sorry, just kidding. :)
Well, you need to figure out what kind of RAM your computer takes (and how much it can take) and what type of harddrive.
What kind of computer is it? How old? What else do you know about it? Have you opened it up yet to look inside?

I don't know what hard drive it has...Is there any way i can find out?
It's an old one which some dude made for us about 2 years back maybe 3. It's got a Pentium 4 2.26 GHz and i haven't opened it up yet.

Well, that makes it a bit more challenging. Did he give you any receipts that would indicate what type of motherboard he used?
The fact that's is a P4 does narrow it down quite a bit. But if I were you, I wouldn't want to go buy something new without knowing for sure.
Maybe you could open it up, post some pictures, and we can probably ID it that way.

He give us the box that the motherboard came in...It's a ABIT IS7 Series...Ring any bells?
Im planning on buying something via online anyway so you guys can help me with that too :D
Aye, i'll open it up later on and try taking some decent pics...Is there anything in particular you need to see inside the tower or anything?

Actually, the motherboard specs are all you need. That's great.
So you can use up to 4 DIMMS of type DDR400 or DDR333. Those will be easy to get. Max of 4GB according to the manual for your board. (downloadable from Abit)
And fortunately you can use SATA drives. Which will make the new drive you buy useful even if you choose to upgrade the rest of the system later.
So any 3.5" SATA drive will work easily. Whatever size you choose.

4 DIMMS of type? DDR 400/333?...So basically i can put upto 4GB of RAM in?
So i just need to buy a SATA drive which will work? Erm do you know of any sites or anything that sells these parts at a reasonable price?

Yes, you can do 4 DIMMS of 1GB each. Or 2 depending on how much RAM you want. Or you could 2 512MB DIMMS.
Depending on what the total price is including shipping, two 1GB DIMMS may cost only a little more than two 512s.
So i just need to buy a SATA drive which will work? Erm do you know of any sites or anything that sells these parts at a reasonable price?Yes. your motherboard doesn't support SATA II. But even if you buy a SATA II drive, there will be a switch on it to support SATA I.
I don't know how much I can help with places to buy this. I buy most of what I need at Fry's or MicroCenter here in the US (retail shops) or online at newegg.com. But I don't know how well newegg handles international orders and what the shipping costs would be like.
So you probably want to ask someone closer to where you live.

Are 'DIMMS' like RAM sticks which slot in to the motherboard?
So my hard drive is a SATA I? (Sorry for the million questions :embar:)
I just went onto ebuyer.com (http://www.ebuyer.com/store/Components/cat/Memory---Desktop) but it seems as if they don't have the DDR400 or 333 unless im looking in the wrong place.
Just for reference, around here a 1GB DIMM of DDR400 is about $50. 512MB is about $25.
And a 250GB SATA 3.0Gb/s (also called SATA II) drive is about $70. 500GB of same for about $100.
Unfortunately right now DDR memory is a bit more expensive than DDR2 here in the US. May be different elsewhere.
Are 'DIMMS' like RAM sticks which slot in to the motherboard?
Yes, and you have 4 slots for them. Likely one slot is taken by the current 256MB DIMM.
So my hard drive is a SATA I? (Sorry for the million questions :embar:)
Probably. What matters is that your board can support SATA, so that's definitely the way to go if you are buying a new drive.

If you are looking for 1GB DIMMS on that site, they are here: http://www.ebuyer.com/cat/Memory---Desktop/subcat/DDR-3200-1GB
Keep in mind some on that page are "kits" meaning what you actually get in the package is 2 512MB DIMMS. Others are actual 1GB DIMMS.

Oh right...Thank you so much for your help Mace...Really appreciate it :)
Do you still need to see a pic of the tower? And i'll annoy you more when i decide on what parts to get :o
Btw, found a buyer for the Porsche yet? :p

Nope, the pics shouldn't be necessary now that you got the model number. If you have trouble installing the stuff, you may want to post pics then. I'm sure someone here can help. No annoyance at all. :)
Yes, I did sell the car finally. Thanks for asking. :)

I think it's going to be more harder choosing what to buy rather then actually installing the stuff cos it's pretty straightforward isn't it? I mean just actually putting the components in the right places and then installing the driver disk?
That's a shame...I fell in love with that car :inlove:...If i remember correctly, you wanted a Audi S3 or something similar right?...Have you seen the new Porsche GT2? or was yours a GT3?

You shouldn't need any specific drivers for RAM or a Hard drive. YOu may want to install your OS on your new drive. Or just continue to use your 40 and use the new drive as well. If you're running Windows, someone else will have to give you better advice on the best way to do that. I don't do Windows. :)

Can't get the S3 unfortunately here. But I am somewhat tempted by the S5 which is available here. :inlove:
But no real rush on that. I have my daily driver which is fine. And I'm buying my wife a new car for Christmas to replace her SUV. (Sssshhh...., it's a surprise.)

Yeah i was thinking of having both drives running but i have no idea on what to do...You're more of Linux dude then?
S5!!!!!!!!...That looks too unique with the LED lights and whatnot...Can i drive it? :o
:rotfl:...Have you still got your S-class?
Yeah i was thinking of having both drives running but i have no idea on what to do...You're more of Linux dude then?
Yes, I run ubuntu on the boxes I've built myself for home. And of course OS X on the Macs I buy from Apple. I have a couple windows VMs I use occasionally, but nothing on bare metal.

I haven't made a decision on that yet. Just tempted by it. We'll see. I told you before, you come to America and we can go driving any time. You're a car nut like me, that makes us family. :D
:rotfl:...Have you still got your S-class?Yep. That's the family hauler, not really my car as such. I'm just the driver. :)

Hmm never played around with ubuntu...Just used RedHat which is okay i guess.
Buy it and i guarantee you won't regret it :D...LOL! That made me smile :embar:...But careful i might just come over there and surprise you! ;)
Lol you make it sound like a slow car but i saw a very similar S-class like yours the other day...I'd still have the S3 over that or maybe the RX8 but that's too damn expensive to run :banghead:

I like ubuntu better. But mostly because I'm a debian fan. It's chocolate and vanilla, everyone has their preference but you can't really say one is better than the other.
Well, except for OS X Leopard. That is clearly the best OS out there. :) Which is why I'm using that 95% of the time.

And with ABC, which I have, it's actually very respectable in its handling. I did actually take it to the track once before it got cold a few weeks ago. That was fun! Surprisingly neutral on track. It's a neat car. And it's great on weekends when we're all together and we need a big car.
But it's not a daily driver for me. Like I said before, I want something small, fun, but still practical enough to drive to the office. The S3 would have been ideal for that.

True, i guess you have a point...Each to their own eh?
I would have a thought a car that size would be kinda 'heavy' to drive on a track with tight corners?
Get a Toyota Yaris :D
I would have a thought a car that size would be kinda 'heavy' to drive on a track with tight corners?
Well, it's no GT3, mind you! :) But still sort of a neat experience. Compared to most luxury cars, it really doesn't understeer very much at all, which was a real surprise even close to the limit. And you can actually even throttle steer the thing a bit.
And it's very poised under braking which helps. It doesn't feel like a sports car, but it doesn't feel like a 5,000 lb. luxury car either. And the drive dynamic seats are sort of fun in the twisties. :)
Of course if you try to push to the limit, the electronics will shut you down, which is the problem with most new cars.
I'm a car nut like you. I take everything to the track eventually. If they'll let me put it on there.

Actually, I'm allergic to front wheel drive. :D

 Im surprised too that it didn't understeer...That car weighs more then like 10 elephants put together ...So go on then, how fast did you take it before the electrics kicked in? :p
I've never taken anything on a track...I don't think i've ever been on one too :(...There aren't any tracks in my area...Most of the tracks we do have are indoor tracks which is pretty useless...I would kill to drive a powerful car on a track but im too young unfortunately.
Oh boy, you are so dead!...Do you know how many females here have a Yaris? :p

Oh, yes, the standard air suspension is a complete pig. But the optional ABC hydraulics are really remarkable. Makes the car feel 1500lb lighter. Come out here and I'll let you try it. :)

Most tracks in the US do not require a driver's license. So age isn't a problem. I don't know how it works in other countries.
Indoor tracks? That must be tiny. Are you talking about carts?

I think most of the proper racing tracks here have a requirement like clean licence and certain age bla bla...
Yep go-karts...I've never driven on a indoor track...Only the small tracks you get at amusement parks which isn't is very 'thrilling'.

I've checked that site (ebuyer.com) and i would like some advice as to the parts im interested in.
For the RAM, i am interested in this (http://www.ebuyer.com/product/63128)...Is that a reasonable price?
And for the hard drive, does this (http://www.ebuyer.com/product/122660) seem okay?

Both seem pretty reasonable to me (at least the pre-VAT pricing), assuming shipping costs are reasonable.
Not much you can do about the VAT over there. :)
