:salams,

You mean Anti-spyware? :p Then that would be Ad-Aware IMO:

as salamu alaikum,

wa feeki baarakallahu,

there's really no ONE software that handles everything. u have to use a combination of software because of how each program detects and how they remove malware.

my recommended apps have always been:

1) Lavasoft Ad-aware
2) Spybot: Search & Destroy (make sure u update it as soon as u install it!)

then for specific malware, u get specific programs like CWShredder, HijackThis!, and other free tools. some of the ones here: http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html , are really good.

if you want to, u could also check out microsoft's anti-spy program but it'll ask for a windows validity test (read: hassle).

I never found symantec or mcafee to be of any help. actually they picked up less spyware than what the above free softwares picked up.

:wswrwb: akhi,

I know Symantec and Mcafee are pretty lame, but what do you think about Zone Alarm? I like Kaspersky antivirus, it's very good IMO, but I won't use it any more as it's not exactly free anymore :D...

as salamu alaikum,

i think zone alarm is ok for basic firewall needs. it's only one step above windows xp's service pack 2 firewall. see xp's built in firewall blocks incoming traffic, but it does nothing for outbound traffic. so if u have a keylogger for example that's sending info from ur pc to someone else's, xp's firewall won't defend against that. zone alarm will because it'll detect that the software is trying to send info outbound. still, u get what u pay for and so it's not totally secure.

I see, :jkk: for that info . I was talking more along the anti-virus component, not the firewall :p. Also, what is the best firewall and anti-virus software then according to you? :jkk: bhai.

as salamu alaikum, wa iyyaka,

well it really depends on the system bhai. u see, not every anti-virus program runs well on every system. for example, norton anti-virus slows my system to a crawl, yet mcAfee is not that bad. Computer Associate's anti-virus is the least demanding and it's almost as good as symantec corporate edition (which I am using now). so it really depends on ur system.

if theoritically everything worked well on every system, and basing the software simply on effectiveness, i would pick something like pandora, kapersky, etc. those anti-virus programs are pretty good. I really liked kapersky back in the days when I suffered from a lot of virii due to kazaa.

firewall, i always found zone alarm to be sufficient. it wasn't the best, and I found norton's firewall or mcAfee's firewall to be so much more featureful, but zone alarm did the job and took up a lot less system resource.

sis you can pick any mirror. a mirror is just back up servers that has the same file incase the original server couldn't give u the file. try fileforum, that's a pretty famous place. it's like a competitor to cnet/download.com

:wswrwb:,

:jkk: for your post. But I just googled for Pandora antivirus, and could not find it?! So I don't know what you are talking about there :p. And yeah, IMO, Kaspersky is the best one, and I would get it but don't anymore for reasons that I said above :').

as salamu alaikum,

insha'Allah. just u know, make sure it's updated often before running scans so u can be sure ur program knows how to detect the latest available threats.

also, try ad-aware. cuz sometimes that one picks up a few thigns that spybot does not, and vice versa.

as salamu alaikum,

LOL probably because the program is called panda, and not pandora :o I meant to say panda but for some reason I was thinking of pandora.

i just googled it....and i notice now they have a full fledged suite. when i last remembered it, it was a stand alone anti-virus program and people loved it because it did just that one thing and it did it very well. i wonder if it has become bloated like norton or mcafee due to these extra features/hassles.

bhai, if u like symantec corporate edition, let me know. i have a life time license (legally) and it works pretty well. if u want i can send it over, unless u have something else that u like now.

:wswrwb: bhai,

LOOooool!! No wonder, this tracking program called Pandora was coming up instead. I hope you don't use it to spy on people :asta: :p.

:jkk: for your offer baisab, I really appreciate it, I just want an anti-virus software though, can it be setup to do just that?! Does it have a lot of processes and slow down the computer at all (as that's quite annoying :p)? I may just try out Panda thing for now, and if it's not so good, I'll remember your offer :D (i.e. I'll rob it from you AHAHAHhaa, sorry I mean take it from you :o :outta:. :jkk: again . You got MSN?

as salamu alaikum,

lol, i'd never invade someone's privacy even if they opened up everything to me

wa iyyaka, symantec corporate edition is exactly that. it's just the anti-virus program with lifetime updates. it's optimized to take the smallest amount of system resources (which is why it's geared towards corporates). it's good overall. add me to ur MSN, i'll send it over whenever ur online.
