I would like to name my child
Hannah Chowdhury
Sarah Chowdhury
Sabrina Chowdhury
At first I liked
Sophia Chowdhury
Layla Chowdhury but I think both these names dont go well with my surname as the first two... if its a boy... his name will be
Adam Chowdhury
Do you guys like it?
I wish I have one boy (Adam) and two girls (Sarah and Hannah)

How about Sabria? I like it more than Sabrina, even though Sabrina is nice aswel masha Allah but Sabria is more an Arabic name. Also I dont think Layla is anything wrong with ur last name?
Adam is nice masha allah, i think it matches with ur other kids names.
Btw if u register on the forum we have a parenting section so u might like it (am presuming ur not registered already?)

I extremely love Sabrin not Sabrina. It's really a nice name. Sarah is a very beautiful name as well.
I never liked Adam at all. How about Ahmad, Basil, Murad,.................:)
Nice names, Masha'Allaah...
My input:
Jasmin/Yasmin Chowdhury.
Sara Chowdhury, I prefer it more than Sarah.
Ahlam Chowdhury.
Suraya Chowdhury.
Sumaya Chowdhury.
Ahmed Chowdhury, aka one of the names of Rasool (saw).
Talha Chowdhury, aka Abu Talha (ra).

is sabrina a muslim name?, cos its an irish name,
surely sophia isnt a muslim name?
.: Anna :.

Sophia means wisdom so its a good meaning, but as a Muslim name it seems like it supposed to be a variation from Safiyya?
Sabrina Muslims put that name cos it has Sabr in it... its not an Irish name  I would have said its from Latin? mayb Greek.. but it's not Irish (as in Gaelic..)
Zakarriya Chowdhury :inlove:
im rubbish at picking girls names

I do like the names you've mentioned and am sure they all have lovely meanings. But (and please don't take offence at this!) it looks to me like you're trying to go for names that have an English sound and are also used widely by non-Muslims? not that there is anything wrong with this, I just think it's a shame when Muslims disregard certain names because they sound 'too foreign'. Obviously I'm not saying you're doing this exactly but it does happen.

apparently its celtic, its well common, u never heard of an irish girl called sabrina:rubeyes:
quite a lot of words in irish r similar 2 french/latin tho, like sugar is sucra in both french and irish i think 4 example.

oh okay, i checked it n u might be right, well its found in celtic legend
"From the name of the Severn, a river in Wales, which was originally named Habren. In Celtic legend Sabrina was the name of a princess who was drowned in the Severn. Supposedly the river was named for her, but it is more likely that her name was actually derived from that of the river."
but seriously that is not a gaelic name u can tell!! even if irish girls r called it, like my name is Anna its not Irish cos the Irish one is Aine, and Anna is from Hebrew?

I am noticing a massive trend that really gets on my nerves with the British muslim community and I have witnessed it so many times now that I almost a regular occurence.
this is the ANGLOSIZING of muslim baby names if you actually just look at the first names of your choices this is a case in point.... Hannah, Sarah, Sabrina, Sophia, Layla, Adam. Are modern muslims to eardicate names with an ethnic sounding pronunciation. Was everyone ashamed of their ethnic sounding names when the register was being called at school? did this cause a mass Psychosis now that everyone so happens to chose a muslim name that has an equivalent phonically sounding anglo saxon name.
How long before musims start calling their Children John instead of Yahya. I named my Son Zayn Al- Abideen after Ali ibn Hussein the number of Zayns that don't thave Al Abideen sickens me as Zayn on its own is not an islamic name.
I know that it comes down to intention and the names mentioned above are islamic but I would ask everyone to delve into their sub conciousness and ask why they are chosing these names is it to fit in.

Zain/Zayn is a Muslim name and it does not HAVE to be in a combination like what you have put. Also there are other combinations, like Zainuddeen etc. Your way is not the only way... even tho masha allah it is a good name, you dont have the right to look down on others using just Zayn because it is not a wrong name. And no I dont have a son named just Zayn :p I am only saying

one lady was named Asiya (rebellious... not the same Aasiya like firawn's wife, but with an ayn sad..) Rasoolallah :saw: changed her name to Jameela. The meaning of Jameela is similar to what you have mentioned here for Zayn. So what is unislamic in this? He :saw: did not change the name to Jameelat ul 3aabidaat... just Jameela. There is nothing unislamic with a name such as Jameela or Zayn. It is a positive meaning. Its not like it means "ugly"

I am sad that you feel this way and I dont intend to rub this in your face but as you may know the names although sound english have an arabic origin which means its perfectly acceptable to name a child exactly that!

Not sure id I'm answering correctly, but in my opinion, a set of 3 names for 3 daughters Inshallah would be:
Khadijah
Aisha / Zainab
Fatimah Zahra
And for sons:
Musa
Aadam
Muhammed
Ibrahim

Yes, no-one is saying that it is not acceptable, only that if the intention is to pander to non-Muslims by making our names acceptable to them, then that is kind of pathetic... it'll take more than that for them to accept us anyway! We should celebrate our difference.
Tranquillity
10-12-07, 10:05 AM
if you want us to accept you make it a little easier by atleast letting ud say your names right please
and dont disrespect us by sayin you dont want to be like us if you want respect then be the first to give it
1) But I'll bet you don't exactly like it when we correct you do you? 'Actually my name is pronounced 'As-maa', 'what, like as-thma?', 'no, As-maa', 'no, too difficult. I can't say it. why don't you change your name to Amy or something?'
2) How is it disrespect to not want to be like you? Do you want to be like me? Is it respect to imitate somebody just for the sake of making them like you? Isn't it more respectful to be yourself? Maybe it would be helpful for you to define what you mean by respect. Because I could 'respect' this society by exposing my body on the street, by putting on loads of make-up, by eating a Big Mac, by going out Saturday night and getting plastered and then throwing up in a park, by having children out of marriage- the options are endless and you might well applaud me for not standing out and not being different, but my self-respect? where's that?

Please remember this is an advice forum for Muslims seeking Islamic advice. We are a lot stricter about what we do and don't allow in this forum than on the rest of ummah.com.
It was preceded by a post that was much worse in tone, its not clear with anonymous users whether two posts together like this are from the same user or not. This did affect my decision to remove both. Apologies if it is not the case, I may consider allowing just your post and Tranquility's reply to it. However I would remind both of you that this is not the place to debate.

That's fine- makes perfect sense since we weren't exactly giving advice!
If the poster in question does want to debate, then he/ she is welcome to open up a thread on the issue, unless of course their 'freedom of speech' is restricted to being anonymous...

I have made the reply to the less rude of the two posts visible, and you can see the post quoted in there. If it wasn't the one that was your post, then I'm not making your post visible. If it was then I apologise for assuming that you wrote the other one as well.
Any further posts debating this will not be approved. This is not a forum for debates, but one for giving advice inshaAllah.
