it is allowed for men to sing like in nasheed as long as the lyrics or the rtheoric lacks anything sinful. It is reported in the authentic seerah that the Prophet while proceeding towards Khabyir asked one of the companions to recite the rejaz[or war nasheeds] in order to elevate the moral of the mujahideen. Yes singing is unlawful for women.

unlawful for women: as in singing in front of non mahram men right???
