I'm taking an art class next semester. Now, I know we're not supposed to draw living things and stuff, but is it okay that I do it for class? I'm not trying to create life or anything. My intentions are just expression and stuff, and Allah knows best.

Should I tell the art teacher anything? What are my limits for the class?

YOu may not have to, insha Allah, if your teacher asks you to draw pics of humans or animals then just let him/her know your concerns. Usually beginning classes don't use people (at least mine didn't).

Should I tell the art teacher anything? What are my limits for the class?Speak to the teacher before you enrol, or even before class starts. If you have to draw them, then at the very least do not draw facial expressions, and keep your drawings of living things as silhouettes. If she has a problem with that, tell her it’s your style. Although in the first instance try and come to an amicable understanding with your teacher.

Drawings pictures of living things is such a controversial issue...

Drawings pictures of living things is such a controversial issue...No it is not. There is no ambiguity. In fact it was/is part of the 10 Commandments given to the Jews and Christians. There are many hadith to make it absolutely clear that drawing pictures of animated living beings is strictly forbidden.

Narrated Said bin Abu Al-Hasan: While I was with Ibn 'Abbas a man came and said, "O father of 'Abbas! My sustenance is from my manual profession and I make these pictures."Ibn 'Abbas said, "I will tell you only what I heard from Allah's Apostle . I heard him saying, 'Whoever makes a picture will be punished by Allah till he puts life in it, and he will never be able to put life in it.' " Hearing this, that man heaved a sigh and his face turned pale. Ibn 'Abbas said to him, "What a pity! If you insist on making pictures I advise you to make pictures of trees and any other unanimated objects."
