Abdullah Ibn al-Mubarak said: “Hamdun Ibn Ahmed was asked:
‘Why was the speech of the Salaf better than ours?’
He said: ‘They talked for the honour of Islam, for the safety of souls and the pleasure of Allah whereas we talk for the honour of the souls, to seek the pleasure of the world and to please people.”

There are two kinds of speeches and two kinds of silences. Speech is either truth or falsification, and silence is either fruition or heedlessness. If one speaks the truth, his words are better than his silence, but the one who invents falsifications, his silence is better than his speech. [Al Hujwiri]

Allah (swt) says:
يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اتَّقُوا اللَّهَ وَقُولُوا قَوْلا سَدِيدًا
"O ye who believe! Fear Allah, and (always) say a word directed to the Right."
(33: 70)
Say to My servants that they should (only) say those things that are best: for Satan doth sow dissensions among them: For Satan is to man an avowed enemy.
(17: 53)
Abu Hurairah (ra) related that Messenger of Allah (saw) said: “Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should speak a good word or remain silent.”
(Bukhari and Muslim)
He (saw) also said: "Man samata najaa - Whoever is silent has saved himself."
(Tirmidhi)
And he gave this advice to Abu Darda (ra): "'Alaika bitawli al-samt; fa innahu matradtun li al-shaitaan - Upon you is long silence (i.e. you should be silent for long) for verily it repels the Shaitaan."
(Ahmad)
Jabir bin Samurah (ra) described the Prophet (saw) as: "Kaana taweela al-samt; qaleela al-dahik - He was long in silence; laughing little."
(Ahmad)
May Allah (swt) not make our tongues a source of regret on the Day of Judgment, Ameen.
