Support The Legal Profession In Pakistan
We, the undersigned, believe:
The arbitrary arrest of lawyers undermines the independence of the legal profession.
Requiring that judges pledge to uphold the emergency measures or face removal from office or even arrest, violates their independence.
The rule of law is imperilled when safeguards are removed and when the fundamental freedoms enshrined in the Constitution are suspended.
The Pakistani authorities should re-instate the Constitution, lift all restrictions on the judiciary, release the lawyers and judges arbitrarily detained, and allow lawyers to exercise their freedom of expression and assembly.
