maybe not about sentimental but if someone nicks ur shoes u would have to walk home shoe-less on the floor which could be hot due to the sun so its not comfy, and is in convenient to have to do that

Also, I guess it would be wise to wear your cheapest and most inexpensive pair to the Mosque so that if they do get stolen, it's not your most expensive pair.

Oh, it's terrible. It happened to me in Colombo, Sri Lanka once. Fortunately someone helped me out and went to a Bata store nearby and bought me a pair of slippers so I could get back to the hotel. :)
(No offense to any Sri Lankans, the country is otherwise beautiful and the people are very nice. This was just my one bad experience there.)
Happens in the Haram all the time. Number of times i had to walk back to my hotel on hot the burning streets of makkah/madinah bare foot. Not funny.

That is actually not surprising.....in South Africa shoes get stolen all the time. Some mosque's actually have lock boxes for shoes... lol.

I saw in the Jumma masjid Mumbai (Bombay) open trays around the pillars and along the sides within the mosque where people place their footwear after removing them at the entrance.
To be double sure that they are not stolen from these trays while you are in sujood, I was adviced to separate the pair, put one shoe in one tray near the entrance and carry the other shoe to another tray a little far off on the opposite side and place it there.

hey i didnt know you have been to sri lanka!
you know about the haram sometimes the shoes are not stolen but they get tidied away or like swept away somewhere cos they have apparently been left in the "wrong" place, dont always have to assume theft... and also apparently there is a stock somewhere that if you lose ur shoes u can ask them n they give u something, cos that marble is hot to walk on with bare feet!! so next time if it happens to someone ask the security people dont just start walking across the marble and hurt ur feet!

couldn't they just pick up the pair of slippers and walk off? I don't see it attached to anything besides the pair being attached to themselves.

yeah but they are not wearable til the lock has been taken off, which can not be done without the key.. which the guy would have kept with himself, so they are useless for someone to steal

I guess.
MashaAllah-very funny. I had a nice pair of sandals stolen in a certain country in the mid-east, but they only cost £1.30 so I didn't really care. I was suprised though because it was a religious gathering type-thing. My Aunt bought me flip-flops to wear on my way home from a nearby shop.
