Aslam o Alaikum All

This problem about my sleep is extremely serious and I could do with some really serious advice/wazifa/tips or whatever that can help me. My sleep is extremely deep, family members keep coming into my room, taking, moving things, they even call me to get up but it never seems to hit my ears(or rather my brain when I am sleeping).I have to be physically shaken to be woken up.This worries me from security point of view too, if ever I am left alone in the house for some part of the night I do not go to sleep, thinking that if something happens/enters the house I would not know.I would not even realise even if I was taken away during my sleep!!

and because my sleep is so deep i have so much problem waking up in the morning.Even if I have been sleep for 12 hours I(my brain and body) would never wake up thinking that I have had a good sleep and its high time to be out of bed. I put the alarm on, sometimes I dont even hear it at other times I put it on snooze and go back to sleep.I have tried putting the clock as far away as possible so I have to get out of bed to switch it off, but because my body is still in sleep mode I make a dash for the bed straightaway.

The above issue is ruining my home life aswell as career.Relationships are sufferring with my eamily members who are now so fed up with me as they think I am doing it on purpose.

Sorry about this long essay, but it was essential to list everything.PLEASE HELP!

But I am of the age where I do not want to be dependant on others anymore, have had enough of that.

Some of my freinds tell me they go to sleep lets say 10-11 and they wake up at 5 or 6 in the morning and cant stay in bed anymore, so they get up and do the housework before going to work. I would love to able to get up at that time which would allow me to read namaz, do a bit of housework, make breakfast for myself and other family members. With my bad habit I am late for work everyother day and never have breakfast even if someone else makes it for me.I just have enough time to dress, wash my face and I am out of the door!!

hmm defiantly a big problem if its affcecting your realtionships with others

i don't know how to help you really, but i would have suggested that you put the alarm clock far away so you have to get out of bed to turn it off, but looks like you already tried that. and youget magnetically attracted back to your bed lool

i think you just need to learn some basic skills such as being responsible for getting up on time

my sons a heavy sleeper too...i am about to go and wake him up for the 3rd time this morning

try more than one alarm clock and ask a family member to remove your blanket an hour or two before waking up....you'll get cold and wake up looking for a blanket. get a coffee pot that you can program the night before and have the coffee already ready when you wake up. a hot cup of joe usually does the trick..so does a hot shower as it gets the blood moving. stretch as much as you can in the am as well.

also, try putting a loud alarm clock in the bathroom, up as loud as it can go. you have to get up to shut it off and then your already in the bathroom ready for a shower or wudu for salat..;)

may Allah (swt) grant you ease

TAhiyya- I really loved this one, very clever idea and i think it would work too.But the thing is I am not from well of family to be the the proud owner of a en-suite bathroom!!!!!!!!!!!I live in a typical Asian style house in the UK, and the bathroom is downstairs. If I tried putting a loud alarm clock there, wow, the whole neighbourhood would bw at my doorstep. And then my family would beat me to death!!!!

In the meantime, please pray I can afford a house with a bathroom upstairs,so I can use your idea!!

Even more Pressing concern would be Missing Fajr Salah ...

I hope that your not, but if you are, then that is a Major Sin, use a good Alarm Clock (A Loud one), keep it away from arms length, and set alarms at the appropriate times.

If you make a Dash for the Bed straightaway that is Pure Laziness/Procrastination ... this is what Satan suggests to us every day,

Read All 5 Salah prayers on time, correctly and you won't have this Problem. Read up about the Consequence of Missing Fard salah.

aww, i am so sorry. i really should not generalize on a forum like this. please forgive me. anyhow... maybe you could put a bucket of ice next to your bed and when you get up in the morning it will probaly be really cold water, step in it when you get up to turn the alarm clock off...or...pour it over your head..;)

the Prophet (saw) slept on a mat on the floor, he did not prefer real comfortable sleep conditions as they could make it difficult to wake up for prayers

parwaaz, you really really need to do some exercises at least 4 times a week. If you do so you'll be fine. Just do it and see if I'm right. :)

i used to have this problem when trying to wake up for fajr, get the loudest alarm clock, put it in the hallway, NOT YOUR ROOM and this will ensure u get out of bed and walk out onto the hallway, although this means your family memebers will have to listen to it, try putting it as far away from you as possible in your room then....but loud alarm clocks really work, normally the cheaper the clock, the louder it is :D

12 hours sleep?

sometimes to much sleep can make u tired as well

Have the fear of ALLAH (SWT) in you.

And the fact that you're being thankful to Him, who Provides you with your existence and nourishment.

Insha'Allah, with that kind of thinking, you can't go wrong.

I've had sleep problems for years and it was one of the first signs of serious health problems. I suggest that you see your Doctor and ask for tests to rule out the following health problems that can cause this type of sleep problem. Test for:

- Anaemia
- Hypothyroidism
- Diabetes
- Celiac disease

There are other tests that I can't think of off the top of my head right now. It could just be a case of hypersomnia (the opposite of insomnia) but you shouldn't allow your GP to fob you off until you get some answers and treatment options. Also ask yourself if sleep problems are your only symptom or do you have other health concerns such as poor attention span/concentration levels, poor digestion, heightened sensitivity to noise and light etc? Those are the symptoms I've had since 12 years ago, but it was only 2 years ago that I was given a diagnosis (I was diagnosed with CFIDS) which makes me annoyed because I wish these problems could've been addressed earlier. If you do have other symptoms such as these then DO NOT use a loud alarm clock- that would make matters much worse. You say you need to be shaken to be woken up but once you are up do you feel okay or are you still drowsy and tired during the day? Sometimes the body sleeps too much because it is fighting a hidden infection and needs the extra rest to help recover from it, so don't be surprised if this means that whereas everyone else can manage on 6-8 hours of sleep per night but you might need 10-14 hours- at least in the short term.

How does your body react to exercise? Does it help you tire out enough to sleep or do you feel like it kills you or both? Try light excercises at first such as walking and anaerobic exercise (bending and stretching type stuff like yoga- it's very good for you and not just for girls) if you find stenuous exercise difficult.

You should also try not to go to bed in an anxious state. Try some light reading or dhikr or something to relax you at bedtime- you'd be amazed how much breathing exercises can help calm you down and don't allow the sleep itself to stress you out. When you pray isha, do the extra rakahs that you missed at fajr, seek Allah's (swt) forgiveness and make sincere dua that he help you wake up of your own accord. Don't eat or drink stimulating foods after 6pm such as tea, coffee or cheese as these don't help you relax at night. Diet could be a factor as well but food is far too big a topic to summarise in just one post here but just be aware of the fact that food intolerances (especially lactose and gluten intolerance) can cause health problems of this nature and if conventional medicine doesn't offer any answers- you may have to resort to homeopathic/alternative medicine and consider a radical lifestyle and diet change. If that's what it takes to prevent further decline in your health and increase your independence then it will be worth it inshallah.

I feel your pain.. I also have a hard time waking up from my sleep. I don't need to be physically shook to wake up though..my mom yelling at me to wake up is quite enough :o Sometimes I don't even hear the alarm clock. Waking up for fajr isn't too bad but staying awake after fajr is the hard part. I feel incomplete if i don't go back to sleep lol and i wish it werent so because I could do a lot instead of sleeping:( And I also have a ridiculously short attention span/concentration level. At school I rarely hear what the teacher is saying because I can never pay attention for more than 5 minutes without zooming out..its even worse when i have work due or a test to study for. I literally can't focus unless i force myself to by giving myself a lecture. No wonder i'm always talking to myself... ah anyway sis, just saying that you aint alone with the deep sleep thing. It really does suck! I'm going to try the 'drinking lots of water' idea that was suggested earlier. Sounds like a plan..

Leaving the window coverings open, always works for me.
. . . take some vitamin supplements,
maybe your deficient in iron ?
Lots of fruit juice/meal replacement drinks should
help to give you more energy.

thank you all for your comments!!

saudi prince-i dont exercise at the moment.my only exercise is 5-7 minute walk 4 times a day to the bus stop whilst going/coming to work.apart from that i am too tired all the time.

ibn abdul-trust me i have tried that and it works in a way.u mentioned 6-7 glasses of water before going to sleep. If i drink just 1 glass before sleeping I have to get up within 60-90 minutes to go the bathroom.so i cant be drinking water every 90minuts and getting up every 90 minutes, that would be the cycle for the night then and there would be no sleep!!

Neelu-thank you for giving your opinion from a medical point of view.Aneamia runs in the family, but i have never been to GP for it. Even though my current situation is depressing,I am just so thankful to Allah that i dont suffer from from insomnia.Night is made for rest and if people do not get that well deserved sleep i just do not know how they cope with there lives.

well tell you about this morning.......i still snoozed twice, got up half an hour later than the alarm time.not impressed with my self, but perhaps a combination of exercise, juices, vitamin supplements along with Salah and ziker will inshallah get me where i want to be one day!!

Salaams,

Had the same problem, best thing to do is sleep somewhere else. Sleep on a matress/no matress on the floor, another bed / another area. It 100 percent works as your body is not 'comfortable' and not in routine. Your current routine is to sleep for ages - change the enviroment and u will wake up inshallah.

Wasalaams.
