Why are squirrels listed though? The only possible reasons are nos.
5 The fifth principle is that all types of pests (hasharat al-Ardh) are also considered Haram, such as a mouse, hedgehog, jerboa, etc.
...and 6 The sixth principle is, land-animals who have flowing blood in them and they survive on grass and leaves, and do not prey on other animals (i.e. non-predatory terrestrial animals) are all considered HalalApart from the fact that hedgehogs are not pests, rabbits are as much of a pest as- if not more of a pest than- squirrels. The only possible reason with 6 is that squirrels are fruit-eating animals- or rather, eat more fruit than most animals- and they are excluded. However, all grass and leaf-eating animals eat some fruit.

Looks like you've answered your own question.
Peace.
are there squirrels in the Arabian desert? Most people don't consider them as pests. I did some digging in another thread and found that the decisions are split about rabbit with some saying that it's halal and some saying haram

rabbit is pretty good...never had squirrel tho.. anyhow, how did your relatives kill the "game"?
muslims can use dogs, but if the dog causes the animals death, you gotta let the dog have it
and with guns or crossbow, i believe you can only shoot to wound..you have to slaughter it halal before it dies
this is what i have read anyhow....Allahu Alim

Unfortunately not: if squirrels are haram because they're pests, why aren't rabbits and why are hedgehogs? If squirrels are haram because they eat fruit and nuts as well as grass and leaves, why aren't other animals which do the same thing?

They don't eat grass and leaves as majority of the times I guess is why, and I'm no scholar but that could be it.
Peace out.
