Salaam Alikum.

In my book "Elementary Guide to Islam" or something like that, it says that Jesus was never killed and a fake was put in his place and the fake was killed. Meanwhile, Jesus was raised to heaven before he could die. Is this true?

And if this is true, why was Jesus raised to heaven?

Yes this is true. As you know Isa/Jesus AS will come back before the day of judgement and rule and bring peace back to this dunya.

Allah SWT says in Surah Nisaa, verse 157: And their saying: Surely we have killed the Messiah, Isa son of Marium, the messenger of Allah; and they did not kill him nor did they crucify him, but it appeared to them so (like Isa) and most surely those who differ therein are only in a doubt about it; they have no knowledge respecting it, but only follow a conjecture, and they killed him not for sure.

Nay! Allah took him up to Himself; and Allah is Mighty, Wise.

Ok. I was debating this with a Christian the other day, and he asked "did any other Prophets get raised up like Jesus", to which I replied "I don't know". The Christian then said "that's because Jesus is the son of God.

How do I debate this?

Salaam, the reason why Isa (as) was raised up to the heavens by Allah was because the yahood wanted to kill him naudhobillah, for apparently blaspheming by claiming he was the son of God (which he never did).

3:55 "Behold! Allah said: O Jesus! I will take thee And raise thee to Myself And clear thee (of the falsehoods) Of those who blaspheme; I will make those Who follow thee superior To those who reject faith, To the Day of Resurrection: Then shall ye all return unto me, And I will judge Between you of the matters wherein ye dispute

:171-172 "O People of the Book! Commit no excesses in your religion: nor say Of Allah ought but the truth. Christ Jesus the son of Mary was (no more than) A Messenger of Allah, And His Word, which He bestowed on Mary, and the Spirit proceeding From Him: so believe In Allah and His Messengers. Say not "Trinity": desist: It will be better for you: For Allah is One God: Glory to Him: (Far Exalted is He) above Having a son. To Him (Allah) Belong all things in the heavens And on earth. And enough Is Allah as a Disposer of affairs.

Were any other Prophets raised to heaven? If I remember correctly, the Prophet Muhammad (PBAH) had enemies who wanted him dead.

Well you can tell him that the same book clears him of that i.e. being a Son of God.

Also your christian freind should noticed that it refutes their belief of Redemption through the blood of Jesus i.e. crucifixion.

I've pasted translated Quranic verses below on the virgin birth. The crux of the text explains that Mary was a virgin and therefore surprised at receiving glad tidings of conceiving a son so she asked how this was possible? The reply was that this is easy for Allah (swt) and in other verses He (swt) explains that He could make Adam (as) out of nothing, so consequently making a virgin conceive is easy for Allah (swt) and there's absolutely no implication of Jesus (as) having a father at all:

19:19 He said: I am only a messenger of thy Lord, that I may bestow on thee a faultless son.
19:20 She said: How can I have a son when no mortal hath touched me, neither have I been unchaste!
19:21 He said: So (it will be). Thy Lord saith: It is easy for Me. And (it will be) that We may make of him a revelation for mankind and a mercy from Us, and it is a thing ordained. -

FWIW, the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Churches hold as a matter of dogma that the Holy Mother bodily ascended into Heaven.

(For those Muslims living in the West, you may have noticed Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Churches celebrating the Feast of the Assumption.)
