Now, before you critisize me for belittling others, I'll explain the situation.

Yesterday, we're going over questions for an exam that's tomorrow. The question is "What is the median of 5, 6, 8, 12, and 5". The answer is 6. The teacher says it's 8. We point to her and show her in the back of the book that the answer is 6. To which she says "the book is wrong"

I'm going to fail this exam tomorrow. She is changing the answers to basic math. For example, is anyone familiar with the order of operations "please excuse my dear aunt sally" (paren., exponents, multiplication, division, addition, and subtraction). She doesn't do that. For an equation, she just goes left to right. I got a question wrong on a previous test because of that.

And meanwhile, she says that she's been teaching for 40 years.

ha I have a bad history with math teachers. They tend to be the meanest. Good luck on your exam. :)

Wow, how on earth did she explain how she got 8?

That's got to be frustrating. I'm sorry you have to go through that. So do you have any recourse as far as taking your test to another professor or even a TA to have him or her look at it?

I assume this is an accredited university. They have to hire qualified professors. Anyone who can't immediately pick the median out of that series is not qualified to even be in your class, let alone teach it!

I don't want to be mean, but perhaps she should have considered stopping at 30 years. There is nothing more frustrating than a bad teacher when kids are trying to learn something important.

I actually quiz all my kid's teachers on various subjects and how they would explain certain questions. They don't like it, but having good teachers is so important.

My math class is from a community college outside of the main university. What's worse is that I'm paying $300 for the class. *sigh*

I think she made a mistake and know she doesn’t want to admit that she made a mistake because it will make her look stupid. And the back of the book is wrong sometimes but its not wrong in this case obviously.

So how does that work? Does that count as part of your transcript or GPA?

I took some classes outside of the university I went to, but those classes were reported back to my transcript and were part of my record. (Granted those were at another comparable university.)

I hope that's not the case with you, because it sounds like this particular teacher is incompetent.

If in fact she made a mistake and is just too embarrassed to admit it, that's even worse.

Honestly, I would get your money back and just try to find a similar class at your own school.

The median is 8??? What is her degree in and where did she get it from?

If you got the question right and she marked it wrong, go over her head and show it to a superior and get the mark corrected. Your fellow students could all complain to the faculty about her incompetence and present your argument in an organized, factual basis. Write a letter listing your complaints in a very precise method and have your fellow students sign it and present it to the dean

lol - usually when she gets a mistake she should just laugh off with embrassement. Go to your consular or the head of that department if she marks anything wrong like temeo said.

report her to your college? get a petition together with all her students..and get rid off her

shes wrecking peoples education...and working out the median is basic maths (even i knew the answer was 6 :p), if she can't do that its quite worrying

thts really very sad, its really frustating when ur techers act like tht.....n the child in return looses interst in the subject.

For example, is anyone familiar with the order of operations "please excuse my dear aunt sally" (paren., exponents, multiplication, division, addition, and subtraction)

for these kind of operations we also use "BODMAS" which means (bracket open, division, multiplication, addition, subtraction)

Hmm my English teacher at college wasn't particularly good either. I'd keep correcting her English because it was rubbish!

Give your maths teacher some time, I'm sure that was an honest mistake and she probably didn't want to be proven wrong by a student!

Slmz. the formula i learnt for median is half(n+1) n=number of terms.

It looks as if the second 5 is a misprint for 15 or some other number; if so, your teacher is right.

It looks as if the second 5 is a misprint for 15 or some other number; if so, your teacher is right.

Well I don't know if it's fair to assume it's a misprint. After all the answer given in the book is 6.

But maybe the teacher did read it as 15. In which case, she's still wrong as far as the stated problem goes, but she has a decent excuse.

But how do you explain not knowing the order of operations?

Unfortunately this is kind of an issue in the US. The good news is there are tons of community colleges, colleges, and universities. It's a huge business and so, compared to India for example, almost any student can get an opportunity to go to college/university. You don't have to be a top or even above average student to get admission. That's the good part.

The bad part is that, in my experience, the standards of some of these schools is not that good. Some really so pathetic that it hurts students. Our nanny is in a community college right now. And hers is supposed to be one of the better ones. But in helping her with her homework, I'm constantly amazed at how incompetent some of her teachers are. They word questions poorly in her exams. They mark her incorrect when she is correct and I have to spend time writing up an explanation so she can take it to her teacher to have her grade corrected. It's amazing.

And it's difficult and confusing for her because she's just trying to learn the material. And so she'll waste a lot of time and get even more confused because the teacher doesn't know what he's doing.

Mace

This is why after I finish my term here and I am fully retired, and then after I hopefully finish grad school starting next fall, I'm going to just teach at a local community college.

If a TA or Prof at Stanford or somewhere makes an honest mistake, those kids will pick up on it immediately and it's not a big deal. But the kids that are in community colleges I think need more careful attention. Because you may have a couple of smart kids who will pick up on mistakes, but you'll also have some kids that are just learning the material and are easily confused.

I always thought that you need better teachers at average universities and colleges. But of course the incentives are such that better teachers tend to be attracted to the better unis or the elite ones. Which is great for them, but a shame for the others.

well I just missed the other five and read

5 6 8 12 n thought  6??? 8??? the median is seven....? lol (and I'm qualified to teach maths as my subsidary subject lol  )

I agree with Mace, there's no excuse for completely ignoring the order of operations!! Even failing to read the question correctly like I did should warrant an apology to the pupils (even a comical one like :smack: @ miss... make sure you don't misread the questions in the exam innit) and praise for the kids for getting it right and pointing it out....

5 6 8 12...and 5...

put in simpler terms - 5, 5, 6, 8, 12

You are now disqualified.
