Stop the next Terrorism Bill

It is clear from what Gordon Brown and Jacqui Smith have said publicly last week that they do not regard the new proposal to extend detention from 28 to 56 days as internment. Such is their conception of civil and human rights. They are presenting all sorts of deceptive safeguards- judicial reviews, independent review and parliamentary reporting. We should not be deceived by this.

We are likely to see the Counter Terrorism Bill 2007 announced in the Queen's speech next week and the Bill will be published soon. The government may try to rush it through the Parliament before Xmas.

Please contact your MP to say that you don't want any extension of the current "anti-terrorism" powers and you certainly don't want to see people being held without charge for 56 days.

Amnesty International says that the 56 day proposal "amounts to internment and is an assault on human rights and freedoms."
