As They Refused the First Time…

“Deeds are according to the last ones (al-khawaateem).” [al-Bukhaaree]

This hadeeth teaches us about a serious matter we all have to think about – that a person will be judged according to the actions and belief that he has at the end of his life.

The Prophet, sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam, used to supplicate - and he, sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam was most frequent in making du`aa – “Yaa muqallibal quloobi thabbit qalbee `alaa deenik [O Turner of the hearts, keep my heart firm to Your religion] [Saheeh at-Tirmidhee 3:177].”

Even the Prophets feared trials and change of their hearts, and if that is the case with the Prophets, then what about us?

“Did they then feel secure against the Plan of Allah? None feels secure from the Plan of Allah except the people who are lost.” [7:99]

Do we walk upon earth as if we are walking upon the Jannah and not upon a place of difficulty, fitnah, a place where no one is safe except one whom Allah protects?

There is many causes of evil end, may Allah protect us from it, and I wish to remind of one, which I heard on a tape by a Yemenite imam whose name is not known to me, may Allah reward him with good. He used a Qur’anic aayah to make a striking point, which in shaa’ Allah, will not leave us indifferent.

“Wa nuqallibu af’idatahum wa abs.aarahum kamaa lam yu’minoo bihi awwala marrah. [And We shall turn their hearts and their eyes away (from guidance) as they refused to believe therein at the first time.” [6:110]

So from among the causes of evil end is that one listens to the truth for the first time and does not say “Sami`naa wa at.a`naa” [We hear and we obey], but rather remains upon his sins and persists in his disobedience.

“The only saying of the faithful believers, when they are called to Allah (His Words, the Qur’aan) and His Messenger, to judge between them, is that they say: ‘We hear and we obey.’ And such are the successful.” [24:51]

May Allah subhaanahu wa ta`aalaa grant us steadfastness upon His Straight Path and grant us a a good end, in faith, submission to him and upon tawbah from our evil deeds. Ameen.
