CD 1
The word heart in English comes from a Sanskrit word that means ‘to leap’. It also means core and in Arabic one of the meanings of heart is lub, which means core.
The heart beats around 60-70 beats per minute and carries around 2 gallon in that time. It is not like other muscles in the body because unlike other muscles it does not get tired. However it does get stronger. The faster your heart beats the faster you breathe; hence breathing and heart are related.
The word rooh comes from a root word meaning wind. Nafas is the breast and Nafs is your rooh and they are related.
There are actually neurons (brain cells) in the heart- around 40000 neurons are in the heart. The brain doesn’t tell the heart to beat and the heart actually beats before the brain develops.
A heart that can think is a heart that is in harmony with Allah.
Say to the eye, “oh eyes know that other people have eyes as well”. This is regards to finding faults in other people because they can also find faults in you as well.
The believer is a mirror to another believer [Hadith].
The only thing that will benefit us on Yaum ul Qiyamah is a sound heart.
The only way corruption can come into this world is through a corrupt heart. If the heart is pure the actions will be pure and if the heart is corrupt then the actions will be corrupt.
All the corruption that is occurring in the world is due to corrupt hearts.
We should smile more often as it is fitrah. Nabi (s.a.w) always used to smile and he was known as ad-dahhak (the one always smiles).
Today people do not smile so much is because they mostly work alone and shayateen are with them and they get depressed. Shaytan also rides alone and it is said in a Hadith that a person who rides alone is a shaytan, two people who ride together are two shaytan’s and three is company.
If you eat alone, shaytan eats with you therefore he gets strong. Shaytan gets strong with heedlessness and becomes weak with zhikr. This is why we should do zhikr and remember to do the masnoon dua’s at its respectable times.
3 stages of elevating the spiritual state:
Takhliya
TaHliya
Tazliya
The 3 maqams:
Past [yesterday]- tauba (astaghfirullah)
Present [today]- istiqama (action)
Future [tomorrow]- taHqiq (realization)
Everything exists because Allah allows it to exist. We exist contingently and we exist due to Allah’s Qayyumiyya and if Allah withholds that then we will not exist.
“One who studies shariah without working on his inner realities becomes a faasiq because his intentions are wrong as he has a lot of the diseases of the heart in him. And one who learns about inner realities without learning about shariah, he becomes a heretic. But the one who joins the two- shariah and haqiqa is the real one who has realized”. This is a saying of Imam Malik.
It’s easy being a Muslim here unless you’re a Hanafi, Maliki, Shafii or Hanbali because there are some dogs around.
The gift of Allah is not in a specific state or time.
Do not leave dua’s even if you think you have not received an answer because, the ability to make dua’s is the answer. What is a better gift then to be knocking on the doors of Allah and that you are occupied with what you have been created for.
Ibn ata’illa said “the point of dua is your servitude to Allah because Allah knows what you need”. The one who is preoccupied with zhikr of Allah (as to ask Allah) gets more then those who make dua. The one who has been given the ability (gift) to make istighfar (to say astaghfirullah), then he will not be deprived of forgiveness.

excellnt notes akhi jazakallah khair for sharing it with us!
as salaamu 'alaikum... I know I am hardly ever in this forum and I proably never give my penny's worth...since that is all it is but I am in NEED of something... I was actually browsing and I saw that some generous being had downloaded Hamza Y's Poor Man's Book Of Assistance. Well, I may not be a man but I am in a state of needing some assistance. If whomever could be so kind as to allow me to download these lectures I would actually send money to either al hambra or give it as sadaqa on your behalf. I have heard much good about this set and I have searched far and wide but no one has it. so I am pleading my case with that person who allowed someone to download it. May I also be permitted to do the same?
JazakAllahu Khairan.

a little info about this series of lectures:
"At the 2000 Summer Rihla Program in southern Spain, Hamza Yusuf introduced the text The Poor Man's Book of Assistance by the ninth century Moroccan scholar Sidi Ahmed Zarruq to an eager group of students at the Al-Azzargra Madrassa.
This work by the classical scholar Sidi Ahmed Zarruq, as explained by Hamza Yusuf, provides an insightful look into our souls. A specific plan for the seeker to follow to understand and recognize the diseases of the heart, and a detailed map of cures along the way to purification. Required for anyone yearning for closeness to God, the one whose heart is impoverished - the poor man."
